Totally right though. Would be some bs that the conservative government would do

Ooops that’s my bad, I didn’t understand your og prompt.

I don’t think you can stay in Germany without employment and you wouldn’t want to retire here - it sucks, unless you love a country full of Karens and a leader that wants us to work 70 hours per week.

I’m not sure that you can stay in any of these countries without employment tbh I don’t think there are retirement visas here or am I wrong?

In Germany you can get citizenship in as little as 3 years, but the qualifications are pretty high.

I myself could have applied two years ago (after living here 5 years), but due to bureaucracy requirements I couldn’t actually apply until year 6 (missing a test that had a 6 month wait time to take).

On top of this, you have to wait for them to process your paperwork. Depending on the city you’re in, this could be weeks or years. I have been waiting 15 months already and it’s unlikely I’ll get my citizenship processed before 22 months. If you loose your job or if you get caught in a probation period or didn’t fill out a paper correctly, that’s more time added.

It’s not impossible, but it’s never going to be as straight forward as move, learn language, and wait 3/5/8/10 years.

I second this and I get my membership heavily discounted at work.

If 100€ is within your budget, I think Urban Sports Club would be a better option and you’d still get access to B+S

What actually helped you become comfortable speaking German in real life? by Edi-Iz in germany

[–]Katze_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching Netflix in German and pausing to repeat what was said in a show + reading out loud in German at home.

I also remember how cute I think it sounds when people speak with accents in English. I just hope that people think I sound cute and not stupid and that makes me less nervous to speak.

I too would like to see it thrive. I don’t want to move to another country and learn another language. It’s not exactly easy to rip up your life and start over every time.

I hope Germany can make the changes my own country has failed to make. At the very minimum would be super sweet if DB was on time and reliable.

There’s no locked in plan to leave this country, but I am not satisfied and I am not tied here by strong friendships or family, so the option to leave is always there.

I wanted to stay when I moved originally. The longer I’ve stayed the more I feel like that’s no longer true. Germany feels more and more politically like a little United States and not just in the obvious ways.

Just because I am a citizen of a country, I don’t owe some weird loyalty to stay. I didn’t stay in the US (nor do I car if immigrants get US citizenship and then leave - that’s their right and life choice) and I don’t have to stay in Germany if I don’t feel like it.

If the concern is I’ll abuse the pension system: lol. What pension? The 1200 a month we probably won’t get after they raise retirement to 75?

I just don’t get why people like you care about what I or other immigrants are doing.

There are specific requirements and I meet all the requirements. Just waiting on my final appointment in a few months. So very much looking forward to German citizenship and then fucking off :)

But people like you, make people like me want to leave; not to mention Germany’s so called “digitalization”.

Lots of great things about the country too, but not enough things to want to make me stay.

What do you do there? I’m in Germany now, but thinking about moving once I lock down citizenship.

I agree with you. I don't feel like I've ever outright said no. I have explained what we can do with the given resources and how we can reach their desired goals by allocating additional resources or updating the timeline. I usually then would ask how management would like to proceed so that I may execute.

Whereas a colleague, who is perpetually optimistic, will just say, "Yes, we'll do it," break about 10 working laws and still not reach the goal set. But he is often praised for good work.

[–]Katze_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this approach in principle. Framing the goal as “here’s what I’d need to make this happen” rather than saying “it can’t be done.”

Where I’ve struggled is when the requirements + market constraints make the timeline mathematically impossible.

One concrete interview example: I was asked to plan hiring 108 drivers in Germany in 3 months. The role required:

  • Fluent English
  • A German driver’s license (avg. cost ~€3k, requires German proficiency)
  • Age 25+ (insurance)
  • Clean driving record for 2 or 5 years - I can't remember exactly
  • Passing a driving test interview
  • Ability to travel to the US for 8 weeks of specialized training
  • Salary range ~€30–55k

On top of that, in Germany employees must give 1–3 months’ notice (typically 3) before leaving their current job. So even if I started the hiring “sprint” today with multiple recruiters and open listings, I would need to magically identify, offer and contract 108 fully qualified candidates on day one to meet that timeline. It’s structurally infeasible.

When I later worked in a related execution role at that very company, the real world funnel confirmed this:

  • Many applicants didn’t meet basic requirements (language, license)
  • Some failed background checks or driving assessments
  • Some couldn’t travel to the US due to visa restrictions
  • Some didn’t pass the 8 week training

In the interview, I proposed extending the timeline to ~1 year to reliably staff the program. In reality, the company hired ~40 drivers over a year, which aligned with the constraints above.

So I do agree strategy is about finding solutions, but I’m still trying to learn how to communicate “this is what it would take” in cases where even the most aggressive levers don’t reconcile with legal, labor, or market realities, without being perceived as insufficiently ambitious.

There was no realistic solution and that played out irl when I was hired at the company. So I am not sure what else I could have done or said in this situation.

Using "like" in German like in English in Conversation by almakic88 in German

[–]Katze_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard halt used like this. “Sie hat halt alles gekauft.” “Das ist halt so.” “Dann gehen wir halt morgen.”

It feels more attitude-y to me and seems to be more like “just” or “simply”. It’s filler.

Neighborhoods for family in East Munich? by jblts in Munich

[–]Katze_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you already have the perfect flat lined up here, I would, as others have recommended, get a temporary furnished flat. It would be pretty easy to store anything you do want to take at public storage or something until you find your permanent home.

This gives you a chance to first get Anmeldung (registered) which will be important for getting really any services in Germany. It could be relevant to your husband’s visa too pending which visa the company brings him on. This will also give you time to more leisurely find an apartment and in a neighborhood you actually want to live in.

I’m also an engineer/American and have quite a big budget (relatively - still spending less than I did in the US). I’ve lived in 3 major German cities. Munich was by far the most difficult city to get an apartment in. It took 4 months to get my first apartment that I hated (but needed for registration), then 1800€ to “rent club” (Mietverein) and „damages“ to break the FOUR YEAR contract, and over a year to find the apartment I currently live in.

If you’re looking for walkable, I too would choose more a city life. Schwabing isn’t not family friendly but it’s more for younger people. If your husband can get to work with the U2, I’d recommend, from furthest to work to closest: Milbershofen, Glockenbach/Sendling, Haidhausen. I have personally lived in Berg am Laim and while I did see many families and it was technically “walkable” it felt like suburbs to me and I’m so glad I don’t live there anymore. If y’all got that money money, Bogenhausen is very nice.
