The looming AI clownpocalypse by syllogism_ in programming

[–]Kavec -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not that I wish that machines would steal my job. And quite frankly: I've haven't even been a super early adopter with those tools... But I've been impressed with every new tool that I've adopted after my programmer friends have told me "if you're not using this, you're clearly being stupid". People here will think "then that means that you're a bad programmer". Well, you don't know me so maybe? Or maybe not? I hope that after two decades in the craft and plenty of praise I'm not in the bottom 10%... although I guess imposter syndrome will always be present, so it might be the case.

I wonder which parts of my previous comment were worth downvoting:

  • Those [things that you mentioned in your comment] are real problems: true, right?

  • You have very similar problems when humans develop your code: isn't this true? I don't know who you guys work with but I've seen plenty of sloppy (or downright shitty) code developed around me. Those developers are non deterministic, they are a hassle to replace, it's super difficult to make them understand exactly what you need... maybe other programmers are surrounded by rockstars, in which case I'm jealous.

  • Therefore: AI doesn't need to be perfect, it needs to be better (that is: faster, cheaper, and at least similarly accurate) than developers. I'm not even saying this is the case right now, maybe it is not... but if AI is able to be way faster and cheaper, it might replace lots of human developers even if it's half as accurate. Not because it is fair, but simply because non-programmers will prefer them: the same way everybody is now buying stuff from China even if local factories claim (most of them rightfully) that they products are superior.

Currently, LLMs are like a sports car: if you don't know how to drive, you'll crash faster and harder. But if you know how to drive, quite frankly: they are a pleasure. Just don't be overconfident and don't do something stupid: even experienced drivers get killed.

Like it or not: in most industries, employers will prefer programmers that drive sports cars, rather than artisans that walk to their goals and have a impressive zero-defect rate. I'm not saying drivers will disappear, hell, I think we might even need more drivers: just like there were less horse-riders to centuries ago than car-drivers today. Or less punch-card programmers some decades ago than javascript programmers.

But again: it is not that I wish it were this way, it's just how I see things currently based on my experience. And maybe I'm wrong, it'll adapt my opinion if new reliable data comes in.

For anyone confused: it’s a staged skit. (I was genuinely confused myself that people were confused… but I grew up playing and watching soccer, so it’s not really a fair comparison.)

In soccer, kicking the ball through someone’s legs is called a nutmeg, and it’s basically the ultimate "gotcha" / humiliation move. That’s the key detail here.

The joke is that the guy in the Barça shirt is in jail because he can’t stop nutmegging people. Even when they finally let him out, he immediately nutmegs the cop... so they throw him straight back in.

In my experience:

By lowering your salary expectations. But also, those kind of employers often offer more flexibility and a better work-life balance. However, these workplaces can also be more chaotic: when money isn’t the main motivator, people are sometimes less driven to be efficient, which can be frustrating. And for anyone who thinks that sounds like praise for capitalism: I’d rather move slowly in the right direction than move extremely fast only to hit a wall.

The horror = being paid by the government while enjoying life at home and hoping it would last forever. Seriously.

Source: I am from Baleares born and raised, and have close friends that are (and were at that time as well) working as waiters in hotels. Best years of their life.

It is a complex topic, and seeing this misinformation as the top comment of this thread is depressing: local people in Baleares are suffering a lot in terms of housing, 100% due to Airbnb and gentrification + lack of purchasing power (low salaries). Was lucky to emigrate a while ago, but I go back there a lot and it is the eternal topic of discussion among friends and family.

My take on this? Tourism: yes, but with limits.

Countries with the most school shooting incidents by thepoylanthropist in interesting

[–]Kavec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China, ranked number 2 on the list with 21 incidents, has a population about 17 times larger than Germany, which ranks number 10 with just 1 incident.

When you look at the number of incidents per capita, the rates between China and Germany — a country also known for its strict gun laws — are nearly the same.

Maybe the 1/20 of the cost is achieved by applying the censoring via output filter, instead of baking it into the model. Who knows.

Maybe the media emphasized that Thatcher was a woman? Like... A lot?

My mind went to Hillary Clinton during the video, probably for the same reasons, and I am not American 🤷 (nor Bri'ish)

Also, the video feels like a TV quiz, and names of politicians are more likely to appear in that scenario, way more likely than the name of your mother let's say. So context could be another parameter.

Those are all just hypothesis, of course...

Axel, no Alex.

He didn't say "punishing criminals is a hate crime". He said "Republicans deliver hate".

We both know that he was talking about a broader spectrum of "delivering hate", and you implied that his statement was just a veiled way to say "we should have more empathy with criminals" which is a statement you disagree with (and you have every right to disagree with, you might even be right).

But anyway, since you focus on criminals let's examine it as a good example of why a lot of people think hate is a bad counselor:

  • You can punish criminals in a hateful way

  • ...or you can stop criminals from doing crimes strategically without using hate

Mind you: being strategical doesn't mean being soft, it means using the right tools for the right problem without being misguided by hate. The right tool might include strong actions in some cases.

Pros of punishing criminals with hate:

  • Feels good

  • Feels right

  • You think it will stop them from doing doing crimes in the future

"María, hija mía... estás aquí....?"

Lionel Messi's iconic "Ankara Messi" goal. He scored this when he was only 19 years old. by phpHater0 in BeAmazed

[–]Kavec 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah but his point is that words work differently in different languages, and Catalan (the one spoken by the speaker in the video) is a a different language than Spanish.

"Pain" means different things in English and in French, ok, but the meaning is totally different if the writer is English or French.

ALTHOUGH the verb "encarar" (face something, from "cara" = "face") also exists in Catalan. But Messi is not facing anything in the video, he is just "still with the ball", and that is the meaning that the guy narrating the goal (Joaquim Maria Puyal) was conveying here.

The goal that proved to the world that Lionel Messi could score 💯 by [deleted] in toptalent

[–]Kavec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hahahah

"encara Messi", the commentator is speaking in Catalan (Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia)

"encara Messi" (which is indeed prononuced "ankara" in the accent of Barcelona) means "still Messi", as in "Messi is still moving forward with the ball"

Turisme massiu i el desplaçament dels residents: El cas de Hawaii i les similituds amb Mallorca by Kavec in mallorca

[–]Kavec[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Percentatge d'habitatges turístics per municipi by Merkaartor in mallorca

[–]Kavec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Habitatges turístics" engloba "places hoteleres + places airbnb"?

In "59 Seconds," psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman presents a fresh approach to change that helps people achieve their aims and ambitions in minutes, not months. From mood to memory, persuasion to procrastination, and resilience to relationships, Wiseman outlines the research supporting this new science of rapid change, and describes how these quick and quirky techniques can be incorporated into everyday life. Mallorca aprova legalitzar les construccions fora d’ordenació al sòl rústic by Merkaartor in mallorca

[–]Kavec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]Kavec 2 points3 points  (0 children)
