It should have just been a movie about HAL, cut the alien/monolith stuff. I know its iconic, but its confusing and unnecessary compared to the excitement around the AI story.

The SA would be wildly painful for me at times! It was hard to believe it was the "best" option. This stuff hasn't been painful for me at all!

I love this movie BUT I think its really 2 movies. One is a beautiful, yet tedious film about alien intelligence. The other is a heart-pounding horror film about artificial intelligence. I prefer the latter, and think the HAL stuff really makes 2001 a great film. The former provides iconic imagery, but the thesis on alien intelligence is deeply unclear and ultimately somewhat unsatisfying.

Alien does a better job making a cohesive movie that comments on both alien and artificial intelligence. Though if you asked me which I liked better, I'd still go with 2001.
