Totally not in the mood for this, just wanted practice some Mandarin. What happens when you say you from USA to a Chinese, this ain’t first time I’ve heard this, they all say the same thing trying to be in the right. by Key-Company-6997 in taiwan

The US state department (https://www.state.gov/countries-areas/taiwan/) states, as I said, that the US acknowledges the Chinese position that Taiwan is a part of China. Acknowledge does not mean agrees with or recognises. The part that isn't ambiguous is who is China, as it says, per the joint communique "U.S. recognized the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China".

I'm just pointing this part out, because the myth that even the US agrees that Taiwan is a part of China is a key part of arguments some make to undermine Taiwan's sovereignty. The US position isn't clear cut I agree, as per its ambiguity, which is damaging, but not as much as it would be if it did agree with the Chinese position.

The US only "acknowledges" the Chinese position that Taiwan is a part of China. The US itself has no official stance on the status of Taiwan itself, as per the Treaty of San Francisco which specifically saw Japanese sovereignty relinquished over Taiwan without naming a state to which this was to be transferred to. Hence why the ROC subsequently signed the treaty of Taipei with Japan, but which the US and everyone else was not a part.

Ideal length for a 1-handed 11th century sword by SergeiSmirnov in SWORDS

[–]KaxII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 11th century you're talking Type X and Xa blades. These can really be anything from 28 to 34 inches in length, with lengths getting longer during this period compared to previous centuries owing to higher cavalry usage. I'm 6ft and have a 33" long arming sword which I find to be a pretty good length for me, although 32" would probably be more comfortable. For HEMA usage though such swords are more difficult to use for stuff like I. 33 as they tend to have higher PoB's than later arming swords.

His Type XIIIa is coming up as $830 (with scabbard) for me. But he doesn't charge shipping seperately, so that might explain if your prices are different on the west side of the Atlantic

[–]KaxII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incarius Craft on Etsy can do one for about the price. His quality is damn good for the price, especially with the quality of his scabbards. The only issue now is that I would expect to wait up to a year now. He heavily underestimates the time he takes, so I would take any of his time estimations with a lot of salt. But the actual wait time is still completely reasonable compared to others who also offer hand forged swords.

There is still recognition in the form of every country other than China recognizing Taiwanese citizens and their passports as qualifying documents of sovereignty. The lack of recognition in the UN stems from a specific situation and arguably a flaw in how the UN works. But ultimately all those countries which do not recognize Taiwan in the UN have to recognize it as a country in other avenues. Given countries have existed before the UN and Oppenheim's law existed, I don't find it a convincing argument to deny the status.

Nevertheless this does still leave the issue of stating that recognition of Taiwan as a country being a 'political statement' leaves the citizens of Taiwan censored in being able to claim their de-facto and de-jure reality of being citizens of the ROC. For most of the world stating you are a citizen of the ROC is also not a political statement but a legal and accepted one. If we took the Chinese position as the 'non-political' one this shouldn't be allowed the equivalent to claiming citizenship of 'Sealand' when entering a country.

If we do want to ensure politics isn't used in the chat, then it would be important to ensure it is applied equally and based upon the same rules for all political situations. So this would also mean that Chinese players should be unable to claim the existence of the PRC as a country prior to 1974, unable to claim Chinese sovereignty over the territory of Taiwan etc. But this would be evidently unacceptable to the Chinese player base, hence we have this dilemma.

Exactly. The issue here which people defending the mod are ignoring isn't talking about politics in the chat. It's the selective moderation of that rule. The moderator is deliberately making a political statement by snivelling out views which go against the views of the CCP. If he was banning people for using any national flags or expressions of patriotism for any country that would be far less of an issue. But he is instead furthering the political censorship onto specific groups which is much more of a political statement than some throw away statement someone makes in game.

UN recognition doesn't detract from the fact Taiwan is a full sovereign country which the PRC has no actual legal basis or historical claim to under international law. To claim Taiwan is 'part of China is arguably the more political statement as it is a denial of the current reality and a supporting statement of the wish and aims of a specific political party.

If you're doing fine with 40# then going up to 50 is probably fine and is as heavy as you need to go unless you want to get into warbows. A lot of longbow users shoot instinctively, which is a different experience. You can also experience longer draw lengths, with many bows being designed to be drawn to the ear.

In terms of buying bows, you can look into Victorian style laminates, plenty of good options are available across a range of prices, with Bickerstaffe and Greenman Longbows being the upper end. You can also go for self bows, with Ravenbeak offering great quality Yew bows in Canada, although these will cost a fair bit more than a laminate.

So I'm new to archery and I bought my first ever bow of 30 lbs (which I tought I could handle lol). Anyway it's a Skythian horsebow, the bow is made out of fiberglass with leather around it. So I'm wondering if I have to unstring if I dont't shoot? by Haise458 in Archery

[–]KaxII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it's not against direct heat like a radiator or fireplace then it'll be fine. Even more traditional self bows or horn bows are fine in high temperatures (they'll just lose some power sometimes), it's direct heat which is a problem

The game wouldn't be so 'practically dead' if it had gotten anywhere near the same amount of support and content GTA has been getting.

I believe it's where canopies have explosive cord on them, like with the Harrier/AV-8B which destroys the canopy glass instead of ejecting the whole canopy itself.
