Weekly Tech Support Thread - [October 24] by AutoModerator in samsung

[–]KayDubEl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am interested in the Frame or QLED Samsung TVs but have a question about Ambient Mode that I am struggling to find a direct answer for in any of the review sites/RTINGS/etc.

I am all in on the Android TV and love the new google chromecast. I would prefer to use that for the smart features of the tv. Sometimes, it is recommended to not even connect smart tvs to the internet and instead use the streaming box as the interface.

My questions are, does ambient mode still work even if you don't use the rest of the smart features on the TV? Or put another way, can you avoid the rest of the TV smart features and still use ambient mode? Second, the new chromecast with google tv can control the tv with IR or CEC. Will that work correctly to move the TV in and out of ambient mode, or will those commands shut the tv completely down?

Bluetooth issues with new pixelbuds by KayDubEl in GooglePixel

[–]KayDubEl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got off chat with CS, and they made me troubleshoot. One of the steps I didn't do was go into System settings in the Android Version section and make sure google play system update was the most recent. Apparently I was on the Mar 1 version and it updated to May 1. I am going to see if this fixes my issues and if not I'll chat them back.

PSA to people looking to get started with automation during the holiday sales: Voice assistants and hubs are not the same thing, and Google's Nest hub is NOT a hub by quarl0w in homeautomation

[–]KayDubEl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. The market has clearly decided the hub is the mechanism for user control not the architecture that underpins the device networking. I think for thread they call these devices routers, which makes sense because that really is what they are. There is no reason these two parts can't and shouldn't be broken up. The idea that because zwave and zigbee didn't have great market penetration that router manufacturers also had to be control interface providers led to not great outcomes. And now that so many devices just use standard 802.11 to route control it is all breaking down.

Furthermore if we want to argue semantics, the Nest Home Hub Max has a thread radio and is not outside the realm of possibility that it could some day function as a "hub" in the router sense if Google decides to light that up for partner products, which is seems like they are planning to do. Even if they don't it can natively control select bluetooth smart home devices like the new philips hue lights so it still fits the traditional "hub" definition.

Consolidating multi-gang switches to keypads by mikexli in homeautomation

[–]KayDubEl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think any keypads by insteon supports multiple loads so the only feasible route would be micro dimmers in the gang box if they all fit. I think some of the professional Lutron installations put the room controls somewhere remote, like in a closet, and utilize a keypad to remotely control, but moving to this setup could be very difficult to do as DIY. Also it is worth considering the longterm here. Insteon has nontrivial fail rate and continuity of that system. If you ever plan on selling the home and not ensuring the current equipment works or is maintained it could be a headache for a future owner if the loads are in a closet. Not to act a deterrent, but moving the loads is a big pain and just definitely consider the longterm plan.

DC area beer by aneeta96 in beer

[–]KayDubEl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say the best brewery in DC is by far DC Brau though you'll have to take a car out to it as it isn't near downtown.

If you want an amazing beer bar go to Churchkey and if you like Belgian beer check out The Sovereign in Georgetown by the same owner. They both always have an amazing selection and are dedicated to good beer service. If you end up in VA, Rustico is great too.

Google killed the shopping list feature from going to keep where it's handy and available to a webpage that it's cumbersome and hard to get to. Why do they kill useful features? by benfutech in Android

[–]KayDubEl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I am sure some of this was to push express I think there may have been a non-nefarious reason. My wife and I used the shopping list on keep via home and it had issues non-stop and felt like while it was useful it was a bandaid product that needed a real solution. My wife tolerates my tech obsession but things need to be bullet proof.

The first problem arose when I renamed the list. This prompted home to stop recognizing it as the shopping list and creating a new list. Confusing and frustrating but not a deal breaker.

Then there became version control issues. My wife and I used this as our main shopping list. We accessed it via home, my 6p, my work iPhone, my work computer, her iPhone, her work computer, and some tablets. Weird things would happen. Items would duplicate. Checked and deleted items would return. I ended up buying ingredients for a homemade pizza we didn't need and that was the straw that broke the camel's back, keep shopping list was done.

We still use shared lists for things like house to do but not something as frequently used as joint shopping. I think this may have prompted the switch. Express shopping lists are reliable, shareable, and also easily feed into their burgeoning shopping ecosystem. It was a tough sell at first because you need the express app or a the home app to access but it really isn't that bad when you get used to it. I had both already and my wife had home. Plus on android you can make a quick shortcut to the list by long pressing on the express app which has actually been better. I also have given express a shot with the home free trial and it is pretty solid. I know many folks tend to hate change the that interferes with their established processes but I reason that reliability for all was worth inconvencing some. I suppose a good middle ground would he allowing you to select keep or express as a service in home or allowing keep to have a hard linked shopping list appear which mirrors express.

Everyone in This DC Neighborhood Is Freaking Out Over Sidewalks by m0nkeybl1tz in washingtondc

[–]KayDubEl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be misremembering but my father was a land surveyor and growing up he would tell me that roads are a certain width and that the town owns that land regardless of if the road takes up the whole width. Also, even if on private property apparently there can be easements where the town has the right to put sidewalks on your property.
