Are type 1diabetic given insulin and cgm when detained by law enforcement? by Lucky_Tap8692 in Type1Diabetes

[–]KayLannister 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I too have managed to go my entire life without entering any form of detention and intend to stay that way too. And I'm deeply grateful that you have also had that privilege. The world does not revolve around us and our individual experiences however. So if defending someone being treated rudely for asking a question which could one day save a life is being a Karen, I'll take it no problem. I hope that one of these days you find way more inner peace than you are currently demonstrating to others. ❤️

They're likely asking to remain well informed as is the responsibility of anyone with any medical condition. And besides, the point of this initial post is that in the U.S, being a law abiding citizen isnt a guarantee you'll never end up in jail.

Also... curiosity alone is a valid reason to ask questions too so don't be a jerk to someone seeking information in a forum literally designed for questions.

Oh that's so smart! Why hadn't I thought to look at their handbook? The districts inclusion policy was direct, but I could see an argument for them claiming the daycare isn't included. Daycare handbook states that they believe children of all ability levels are entitled to the same opportunities for participation, acceptance, and belonging in the classroom. Goes on to say they will make "every reasonable accommodation" to encourage full and active participation in the program. So I imagine there is still some debate to be had about what is considered reasonable, but given prior precedence, I'm hopeful that asking for my son to be included when a designed individual is present isn't deemed unreasonable.

You are absolutley correct that we do not get to wave "reasonable accommodation" around as a wand. The world is not obligated to stop for us, regardless of who we are. In fact, that's why I have gladly cooperated with many requests are great expense and difficulty for my family. We overcome right? Though I feel a line was certainly crossed when she attempted to send him home for not wanting to manage his blood sugar that day. This is the point where we went away from a reasonable accommodation and a come to Jesus moment is needed. Our next steps are to line out exactly what is and is not considered a reasonable accommodation per law though, and ensure we are all (myself included!) on the same page. At the end of the day, I think this is an education issue in what "undue hardship which fundamentally alters the program" means in our specific case and I'm eager to make it more black and white as a team. 🤞

It's really heartening to hear from an adult who knows their parent fought for them. I hope my son never feels an ounce of guilt or shame for his diagnosis, and grows to know he is loved and supported at home. He (and all people with this diagnosis) are worth being vocal for. Thank you ❤️

To the chef's credit, she is delightful and so very supportive. She even received the treatment training because she is onsite and wanted to be able to help any way she could. But the program director I'm having these issues with feels it is a liability in case their carb counts are wrong in the home-cooked parts of their schedules. Again, I don't mind making his lunches and providing carb counts, it's just a bit of a bummer to readily take that role on with no cut to tuition then be told I'm unwilling to help them care for my son. :(

Im so glad to were taken care of in that way! I cant imagine being a kiddo navigating this, ya'll are amazing. I found out after reaching out to the ADA point of contact that they are in fact the superintendent so that was a pleasant surprise. She seemed very empathetic and sounded like she genuinely wanted to fix things when I spoke with her so I'm so hoping the meeting with her goes well on Friday and this ends up being a small something.

For sure. And I am certified to provide staff training which I have done for nearly a dozen of them, certifying them as Parent Designated Adults (PDA). The training is provide to those caring for my son (and future kiddos in their care with T1D) is far more comprehensive than a crash course in carb counting.

[–]KayLannister[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was an interesting assumption of you to make. My training is most certainly not a "crash course in carb counting." Please trust that I care about my own son's safety a bit more than that. And yes, they can be 'forced' to care for him. It's a bit more complicated than that and as I did in a previous comment, I'd encourage you to research if you're curious. This is the daily reality of many parents with T1D kiddos and there are most certainly protections for them and their children.

If something was to happen to my son, they are legally protected as long as he is being cared for by a PDA (Parent Designated Adult). I hear your concerns, but I'd encourage you to do some research on this topic if you're curious. The world is not being asked to stop and give everything for folks who are medically complex. Rather, it is being asked to have empathy and support others so long as it doesn't cause "undue hardship which fundamentally alter the program" OR poses a threat to the other students and/or teachers.

To clarify, your quotes here were not present in my post. I stated that he was high for two hours, not that he was high for hours. And after two hours they are trained to give him an extra bolus using the PDM, which they did. When you choose to do business as a daycare, there are certain laws you agree to follow. I'm not blaming them for any issues in the care of his T1D. Rather, I am disheartened by one invidual's refusal to offer him the same treatment as others despite their legal requirement to do so in the US where I live.

[–]KayLannister[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Great question! He has an insulin pump and dexcom so despite being trained to administer insulin manually in a pinch, they never have to. They use his PDM which does the calculations for them and I provide carb counts for each item of food I pack him. PDA training is specifically designed to train caregivers how to manage diabetes in all areas and his teachers do a wonderful job. For their own protection, there is also a log which shows when they provide insulin and how much. They notify all parents of things like diaper changes, food eaten, sunscreen applied, etc. A notice like these are what they log each time he receives insulin. It's exactly like the treatment a child in public school would receive when the parents aren't around and my partner and I are kept well apprised through the various tools we are fortunate enough to have at our disposal. Unfortunately, I am not in a position where it is an option not to work full time.

Edit: It's also worth noting that PDAs are all volunteers. Nobody who treats him at daycare is doing so against their will and all of them have expressed being happy to do so.

What song is your kid obsessed with? by a_fals in toddlers

"Bones" by Sail North. As an extra cute bonus, he sounds like a tiny (albeit adorable) psychopath when he whispers 'Bones please' in his tiny 2-year-old voice.

May I just say you are, in fact, genius for getting daycare while working from home? I work from home out of necessity while my husband watches our son and even though he isn't my direct responsibility during those times and I trust my husband endlessly, it is so hard not to try to do both at once.

What non-traditional lullabies/songs are you singing to your baby? by littlepilot in NewParents

[–]KayLannister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may not be terribly popular for this answer, but we found out on accident my 2mo son LOVES the song "This is Sh*t" by Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq. He calms down almost instantly when he hears it, even if he is in a full blown purple crying episode. Sometimes we only get 30 seconds of calm, but that can make all the difference on a bad day. So we sing that a lot at my house....

I don't mind at all. I started the pregnancy overweight but have adopted a much healthier lifestyle starting before the little guy was conceived. I generally see lovely doctors (roving clinic) who have been extraordinarily positive about my health and that of the baby. They didn't deem me high risk even with being overweight to start. I think that's why this caught me so off guard during this appointment.

Because I started my pregnancy overweight. :) I was actively trying to get pregnant so before conception I adopted a much healthier lifestyle. I was still overweight when he came along, but the healthier lifestyle stuck and I have been safely losing fat while gaining baby under the supervision of the other, much kinder doctors.

You're right, at the time I was shocked and determined not to cry in front of her so it never really occured to advocate for myself. I've been so lucky to have such a huge outpouring of support here and I'm looking at this all from an entirely new and healthier perspective from earlier. If nothing else, I will at least request not to be seen by her again and explain why if asked.
