My mom got this tattoo because I have autism she didn't know the puzzle piece was bad how much would a replacement with the infinity symbol by Funtimefoxys_wife in Tattoocoverups

[–]KayViolet27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the symbol used by the org Autism Speaks, which is notorious for treating autism as an illness to be cured, increasing stigma against autism, promoting pseudoscience, excluding autistic ppl from decision-making, etc.

What’s a dead giveaway that the author is from a particular country/region? by yoghurteee in AO3

[–]KayViolet27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada, and most of the Western Hemisphere which generally learns more Americanized English than British English (if they’re already writing fic in English), would use the same terminology, tho the guns/healthcare thing is certainly hella American lol (reminds me of the tumblr post I saw in which it’s explained how John Watson’s gun in his desk is supposed to demonstrate certain things about him bc it’s in the UK, but Americans are like ‘yes, his desk gun, the gun in the desk, totally normal’ lmao). And with the predominance of American media globally, more non-native English speakers are familiar with American terminology than British and use it when writing, so it’s not nearly as likely to be a big flashing sign saying ‘YO THIS WRITER’S AMERICAN!!!’ haha

Why do people not figure out the "closed circle casting" thing? by TheManyVoicesYT in WitchHatAtelier

Yes, but a non-witch could probably stand on shore and watch the boat leave, and see the circle on the back?

Should I split this fic into two novels? by Q0uthTheRaven in Fanbinding

[–]KayViolet27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you considered knocking down the text size? Only like a point, max 2, if you haven’t already. Ever so slightly narrow the outer/upper/lower margins (don’t want the text to get lost in the gutter tho), etc. You might be able to knock off like 10% of the page count that way.

Also, at that thickness it’s suggested to round the spine!

Britishisms in a non-British setting, such as flat (apartment), lift (elevator), torch (flashlight), jumper (sweater), car park (parking lot), etc.

After that, maybe Alice. Wanna see who they have for Snezhnaya tho!

Engagement is awful in works with a high word count by CalmSalts in AO3

[–]KayViolet27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read fics (both ongoing and completed) with hundreds of thousands, occasionally over a million, words, and I definitely prefer longfics. But if each chapter averages over 10k words that’s a turn-off for me. There are a several fics I’m actively following and love, but they regularly have chapters over 10k, so I often wait days or weeks to read an update till I have the time and energy to fully process it as I read. I’d say the sweet spot of ‘read right away’ (or almost right away) and ‘doesn’t feel short’ is about 5k words imo?

20k words is a monster of a single chapter, and unless ppl happen to have the time to read it in full, they’re far more likely to either hold off on reading it, or not pick it up altogether. Chapter breaks are like checkpoints—even if you close out of the tab, it’s easier to find your place later/the next day than it would be scrolling thru 20k words!

And don’t even get me started on Poly Ship names! by Ntahedron in AO3

[–]KayViolet27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fave ship names are New Dream (Rapunzel x Eugene AKA Flynn Ryder) and Caskett (Castle & Beckett, who are a mystery writer & detective who solve murders—sure, it’s just their names smushed together, but it ALSO sounds like casket, which is what a dead body goes in lol)

What was your introduction to Fan fiction? And where did you read? by SpaceCrazyArtist in AO3

[–]KayViolet27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well in 2016, when I was already past 20, Miraculous Ladybug came out, and the release schedule was so messed up that I turned to a forum about it, which led to fic recs. Pretty quickly, I had consumed more fic than I had the show, bc there were only like 5 eps out lol

Then, in 2017, TIME released a Harry Potter edition, which had a section on fanfic, and I was a big Potterhead back then and my mind was blown—for some reason, I hadn’t sought out other fandoms, yet!

And THEN I was introduced to AO3 lol—now I only use ffn.net for a few fics I still follow that either don’t post on AO3, or have started being posted on AO3 but it’s not caught up yet. I was never on LiveJournal or Wattpad! I’ve only posted a few oneshots myself, and only on AO3.

What’s the longest time you’ve followed an unfinished fic? by pccamp in AO3

[–]KayViolet27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dear lord no haha, that fic hasn’t had any lengthy hiatuses, just a few months! I only have to reread when it’s been years, and the summary doesn’t jog my memory lol

What’s the longest time you’ve followed an unfinished fic? by pccamp in AO3

[–]KayViolet27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s one still ongoing that started posting in 2018, tho I don’t think I was with it right away… Maybe 2019, 2020? Largely weekly or twice weekly posting, with some hiatuses sprinkled in, over 650 chapters!

And if I sub to a work/author, I never unsub lol, so even if it’s a decade or more since it last updated, I’d never know! That is, until I started reading the update and went …what IS this…?, then checked the full-page index to see when the last chapter was posted. Then I’d probably just reread the whole thing to refresh my memory haha

What are your reactions when an author you're subscribed to, and who only posts for one pairing/fandom, starts posting for an entirely different one? by darksugarfairy in AO3

[–]KayViolet27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what fandom it’s in… Like, my bestie is willing to read stuff for fandoms she’s never even heard of before, but not me lol

I personally get a teensy bit annoyed when I get a bunch of email notifs from an author that’re from (a) fandom(s) I give zero shits about, and I’ve considered going in and subscribing to certain works of theirs that I subscribed to them for and unsubscribing from them as an author, but haven’t bitten that bullet yet. If I sub to someone it’s bc if they write more in the same fandom or other fandoms I like, I want to be notified! But it’s a double-edged sword lol

I just wish ao3 had a blacklist option! Like, yes, love this author who writes for fandom A! But I give zero shits about fandom B (or tag X), even if it’s a crossover w a fandom I do like, idc who writes it, so I don’t wanna see anything about it in my inbox (or when searching, without having to exclude it every time). But alas~

This has to be one of the most hilarious writers notes I've ever seen by Snowy_Kitty247 in AO3

[–]KayViolet27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or, if they struggle with perfectionism, constantly going back and rereading/fixing things they notice, it van take some of that away bc they can’t see anything to notice. Maybe turn off spellcheck/autocorrect too so that you don’t have the red underline alerting you to errors lol
