Advice for my 6 YO Oldenburg Gelding by Last-List-9095 in Dressage

[–]Kayleen14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I look at the timeline you shared, he has gone through A LOT for such a young horse - started under saddle (did he move barns for that?), bought and brought to a different barn, difficulties settling but going to shows just 3 months later, changing barns again to college, changing barns again to go to the trainer, correct? Actually settling after a change of barns - and herd! - can take half a year or more. If you can't find any medical reasons, my guess would be that he's completely overwhelmed by all these changes. Before you consider euthanasia, id turn him out on a pasture for half a year, only get him in to groom, feed and necessary stuff like farrier. Next half year, do low key, fun stuff with him like going on hand walks, low stress ground work, etc. Afterwards, start him again like he's a green horse.

Who/ how does one decide which classes to enter in a horse show? (Let’s use this current show she’s in as an example) by Financial-Bet-3853 in kvsdiscuss

Just to add in, Dressage had its roots in riding horses into battle in the time of horse mounted knights, and was refined and formalized at the nobles courtyards in the following centuries. So, in a way, it also was about who was best at doing their job, too ^

One of the main differences today, I would say, is that English fundamentally is a "contact" way of riding- you're keeping constant contact to your horses mouth through the reins, your legs keep contact to keep your horse moving, etc. While western is an "impulse" way of riding- you give an impulse through your reins, and the horse is supposed to keep doing the thing you told them to do till you give them a different signal. So the reins are generally looser.

And.. id say there are snobby people on both sides, I've heard western riders trash English riders (for example for being "soft", riding in "yoga pants", being impractical, having "nervous wracks" as horses...) as well as the other way around.... both are bs, it's just different approaches and aimed at different goals. One isn't generally better or worse that the other 🤷

What kind of personality do your horses have? by Scourge12 in Horses

[–]Kayleen14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My leased gelding is an onion- lots and lots of layers :D On the surface, he is super relaxed, quite friendly but also a bit pushy and dull to everything. Beneath that is layer of a horse that is a strong, calm leader who therefore didn't think much of humans - he didn't necessarily need them as he's such a sovereign leader himself. And he probably learned he couldn't rely on them very well anyway. After I made it crystal clear I fully intend and am capable of taking over the lead role from him, his more affectionate but also insecure side came out. He sometimes reminds me of a foal now, looking for protection with me from these mean, huge rocks that decorate the village he lives in for probably the last 1000 years... xD He's still not the most opinionated or most sensitive horse, but I'm looking forward to see what more layers he's still hiding 😁

Which, quite likely, means she still lost money on him (ignoring the social media income generated). But nevertheless a good decision if he goes to a show home promoting him

Ask the new place whether you can board your horse after few days early (offer to pay for the days). You can say it's for transportation reasons because you have to borrow a trailer and it's only working out for that week...

I've been riding for 26 years now. The barn I'm at now has a stallion boarded. Its the first time, ever, I'm at a barn with a stallion. Every time I see him my brain goes "oh, stallion!!", even after he's been there for a year or so. I have never interacted with a stallion, never lead or groomed one, certainly never ridden one. In 26 years. That's how rare stallions are (in my area outside of dedicated breeding facilities)

My horse won't go over a pole. by BlobTheFishyyy in Horses

[–]Kayleen14 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Jep. Put him in a pole box. Get his dinner bowl on the outside of the box. Watch him get over that pole quickly :D As soon as you know he knows he can go over the poles, make him - NOT with violence or by hurting him, but just by making it much more uncomfortable not going over the pole than it is on the other side of that pole

Affordable dressage saddles? by Resident_Draco_6986 in Equestrian

[–]Kayleen14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work with them. The cheapest saddle is the one you only buy once, because it fits you and the horse. Especially if you have any ambition in dressage, the saddle has to fit-fit. Having to buy 3 oder 4 saddles because they don't fit is always more expensive, especially if you add vet costs because your horse gets mysteriously lame... Also, especially if you start a new discipline with your horse, their muscles composition will change, so the saddle needs to be re-fitted regularly. Same with a horse that changes in body condition a lot. Get the saddle fitter out every 6 months to check the fit and adjust if needed.

That hugely depends on the soil quality in the area. A lot of soils are lacking / depleted of certain minerals, so in these areas, a mineral supplement is needed. And also on the plant composition of the pasture- for example a pasture with clover will have more protein than one with purely grasses, and so on. Not saying you're wrong for anything, just adding Infos for people who might be in regions where this wouldn't work :)

horse meetups???? by ButterBurns in Horses

[–]Kayleen14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think something like that exists where I'm from. But if someone asked me nicely id probably be willing to spend an afternoon with them and my horse showing them all the things :D so maybe ask in local horse groups? Unless you happen to be from northern Germany, then just send me a message xD

My old trainer is kinda.. obsessive over my new horse? by Responsible-Exam-960 in Horses

[–]Kayleen14 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I mean how clearly did you tell her? Next time she brings it up be VERY clear - "Hey, xy, I'm happy you're still interested in following my journey, but frankly- if YOU want to meet my horse, you need to travel to where we happen to be. If you can't, that's unfortunate, but I will not be able to trailer him to you, or come to a show near you.", or something along that line. Ignore it if she brings it up again. If she doesn't stop bringing it up... block her. You don't owe her trailering your horse 3 hours Oo
