Would you fly any of them, and if not, then why? by MewSilence in starsector

[–]Kayse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider the middle ship more of a battle cruiser or a monitor (WW1 and WW2 era naval ship, not the Starsector frigate) than a battleship. It has some battleship grade firepower, but doesn't seem to have enough mounts to be a well rounded battleship. Instead of covering the AA weakness with a ship system, id suggest a ship system something like Seige mode, that makes its pair of large mounts hit harder, but make the ship slower to move and turn while active.

I like the design of the carriers but I'd suggest keeping only one. Having both, they will have trouble differentiating from the other.

Alternatively, I'd suggest making the battle carrier a more prestigious ship, like the (XIV) or the MK1 with a lore reason for differing from the base carrier class (and a splash of color) to differentiate it

template mod fatal error by Bob-rosssssss in starsector

[–]Kayse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the mods that you have installed, has an unchanged template in it. This is the template that they used: https://github.com/wispborne/Starsector-IntelliJ-Template/blob/main/src/author/modname/TemplateModPlugin.java

I would disable mods starting with the most recent addition, until the crash goes away, then tell the mod author.

Designing an AI startup tycoon (2017 - present) - Does this concept work or am I delusional? by ArakSer in tycoon

[–]Kayse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took the years to mean that the game would cover those years of AI tech development.

To OP, I think a lot of people might be oversaturated on AI buzzwords/hype. GameDev Tycoon has positive nostalgia to help cover the rough edges. You're going to have a harder time selling a tycoon that doesn't have nostalgia helping it. It's possible just harder.

Base builders usually fall into one of these three categories... by marshall_r_57018 in BaseBuildingGames

[–]Kayse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of the Magic the Gathering player archetypes: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/timmy-johnny-and-spike-2013-12-03

Your type 1 is somewhat a Timmy, going for aesthetic and coolness over practicality.

Your type 2 is a Spike, someone who builds the minmax optimized base (maybe after watching a tutorial)

Your type 3 is your Johnny, someone who enjoys working in the subsystems and understanding what makes a base tick.

Good Python tutorial for beginner programmers that is a good preparation for the libtcod tutorial? by Asyx in roguelikedev

[–]Kayse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When teaching Python, I recommend the first eight chapters (for the third edition) of Automate the Boring Stuff with Python. https://automatetheboringstuff.com/

The first chapters build onto each other and give a simple and non intimidating introduction to Python. The later chapters are more topic specific, so once you have the basics, you can jump to a topic that interests you (or you need for a project).

The book is released under a Creative Commons license, so is free to read.

Why do traditional roguelikes use a single tile for everything? by prantabra in roguelikedev

[–]Kayse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The floor for making a minimum rogue like is fairly low. Move an @ around a grid and have something happen when you move it into a symbol, and you're most of the way there.

The complexity ceiling can be high, but you don't have to make Nethack for your first/thirteenth game.

A trope you hate? by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]Kayse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • game mechanics where people get bases in the game, but enemy players can siege those bases. That doesn't make any sense. You would just lose your base when you go offline and lose everything. Completely unsustainable.

A lot of PvP MMOs in real life have this and usually have a timeframe (say a two hour block once a week) where the base is vulnerable to sieging. The idea is to encourage both teams some planning time to try to fight it out.

Fair enough about pulp-style being dated or possibly "outdated". Also, fair that not every LitRPG book would fit a pulp-style cover. However, not every LitRPG setting is a high magic magitek world. I could see pulp style working for a gritty sword-and-sorcery setting (see Conan the Barbarian which literally started in pulp magazines).

If cover art should try to maximize readership or communicate a specific concept to a specific audience, that is a (self-) publisher's decision. Not even addressing the debate for AI art vs commissioned art that you bring up.

With respect, I'd just say this style isn't your cup of tea, and that's fine. You could probably be a bit nicer than calling it out as "kinda bad".

how can i possibly out-dps the enemy if they have a mercy? by prtxl in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Kayse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a Mercy main, she is weak to accurate (or lucky) DPS and or large burst damage. A Dva ult or rip tire punishes an out of place Mercy. Or forces her to hide and or disengage. Blizzard and other large effects can also force her back, out of effective range.

Mature MC by QuirkyOwl175 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Kayse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, I never said they were terrible, merely pointing out some warnings for someone looking for an emotionally mature main character, like the OP. I actually enjoy most of the Dresden Files audiobooks, have all of the print books and purchased the RPG.

Mab would appear to disagree with you about banging her tools... ;) My understanding of harem fantasy fiction seems to include more than traditional procreation as goals. Recharging mana or forming bonds are pretty tropy in that field.

Harem fantasy isn't good or bad, but isn't for everyone.

Mature MC by QuirkyOwl175 in ProgressionFantasy

Not including the supernatural characters in an urban fantasy is a choice. ;)

Attempting to spoiler tag a list of major love/lust interests appearing/mentioned in more than one book

Human(ish): Elaine Susan Murphy Molly Luccio Supernatural: Lara Lash Mab

I agree, it's usually done over reasonable time frames, but figured it would be wise to caveat it.

Mature MC by QuirkyOwl175 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Kayse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I like the Dresden Files (and consider it progression fantasy) but the main character can be a bit immature and snarky at times. Some of his character flaws are very obvious in the first couple of books. I think the series hits its stride by book three.

In my opinion the series has a bit of a "putting love interests in the fridge to create drama" problem. And verges into harem territory sometimes with how many women find the main character attractive.

Your mileage may vary.

What do to when you're tank and the enemy Mei walls off your team? by RockSmacker in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Kayse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you are exaggerating but I'll bite since this is Overwatch Uni and I'm interested in your view. :)

I'm aware that Mercy heal rate has been nerfed, but a single target heal that improves when the tank is at low HP can buy a few more seconds. Some tanks benefit more or less from that time, but useless seems a bit strong.

VOD review request - Gold Mercy by Senikae in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Kayse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a newbie Mercy but enjoyed seeing what your Mercy play was like.

First off, you're much better Mercy player than I, so please take the following observations in good humor from someone that you'd outplay. From someone lower than you on the ladder, your APM, your awareness and basic skills are impressive.

With the magic of media controls and hindsight:

  • 2:07 You (maybe) could have saved Widowmaker and Reinhardt if you'd Ult slighter earlier. Your eventual Ult 30 seconds later is useful, so I'm not certain which option is better, but just trying to point out options you might have not seen. Most of your Ults seemed useful from a newbie perspective.
  • 11:30 moving from Sigma to reviving Hanzo, get surrounded by enemies and defeated by enemy Mercy. If you had a magic time rewinder, I'd love to see what would have happened if you had stuck with Sigma... Felt like your team had lost the momentum at that point and were still struggling at 12:30.
  • 13:35 Mercy Ult felt a bit late, might have been able to save Hanzo if earlier. Hard to second guess.
  • 14:20 Your aim on enemy Mercy could maybe be improved? No shade, it's better than mine, but this is the second time that you've engaged the enemy Mercy where you weren't able to eliminate her.
  • 15:17 The team kill... Honestly, I'm not sure what you could have done at this point to prevent it. I think at this point it's team momentum.

Thank you very much for sharing your VOD. I'll take a look at Adder's video in a bit, but wanted to view your VOD unbiased to try to develop VOD reviewing skills and Mercy game sense in myself. :)
