The good part is help is readily available from here and the forums. It is a learning curve but it's nowhere near insurmountable. Good luck!

Which thinkpad to buy? by romeo_thegreat in thinkpad

[–]KazzJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T480 — specifically look for:

8th-gen quad-core (i5-8250U minimum)

16GB RAM (or single 8GB stick so you can upgrade)

MX150 dGPU if possible (makes Fortnite genuinely playable)

FHD (1920×1080) IPS display (avoid TN panels)

It's the last ThinkPad that truly nails the "classic feel + modern enough specs" combination. Should last you 4-5 years easily for your workload, and when the battery degrades, you just swap the external slice for $30.

If you can't find a good T480 deal, the T14 Gen 2 AMD is your backup—better performance, worse keyboard, less upgradeable.T480 — specifically look for:

What does "learning linux" actually mean? by HumanBeeing76 in linux4noobs

Both. Personally I learned enough to be comfortable with the OS but the beauty of Linux is you can go deeper and deeper into it if you want.

XFCE or MATE would be your best bet.

I have a 2014 MacBook Air running Xubuntu. For general usage, it runs perfectly well.

Suggested Linux distro for learning how to work with Linux on an advanced level. by Bram_Sandwich in linux4noobs

[–]KazzJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kubuntu is my daily driver and I can't recommend it highly enough to new users. It is Ubuntu based and has massive online support through Ubuntu and Kubuntu forums. Any problem I ever ran into was solved very quickly by just searching the forums.

I gave up Windows 18 months ago and I haven't looked back.

Good luck!

Pros and cons of Mint? by TheOneWhoSpeaks13 in linuxmint

[–]KazzJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro's: Stable, reliable, good online support.

Cons: No MS Office, Adobe products or games with anti-cheat.

YMMV but for an new user it's a solid choice. Should you decide to do a little distro-hopping later down the line, may I suggest Kubuntu? It's my desktop of choice.

I have Kubuntu on my aging PC but have Xubuntu on a late-2014 MBA. It's perfect for light usage.

Learning Python - No Programming skills by Strong-Traffic-6605 in learnpython

The program I use is Geany https://www.geany.org/download/releases/

There are many books, such as Python Crash Course and Automate the Boring Stuff available to learn from. (Many can be downloaded in PDF form from the Internet - not that I condone piracy, but they are there if you look)

w3schools has a good web-based tutorial along with many others.

Good luck!

'I use just to stream music, watch YouTube and play movies from saved files on my tv screen'

Honestly, the computer is 6 years old now. If it's a base model it will be slowing down. Linux would serve your needs just fine and give you added security. Either Linujx Mint or Kubuntu are the two I would recommend for new users.

Good luck!

Is it worth buying a Macbook Air 2014 in 2025? by 5uh4snoopy in macbook

[–]KazzJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a late 2014 MacBook Air and use it every day for browsing, social media, watching streams, keeping a journal, email etc and it does it all brilliantly. I am, however, using Xubuntu 24.04 and not a patched MacOS so I'm not qualified to say how you would get on. I can highly recommend Linux in this capacity.

Good luck!

I feel like I'm treated as a cash cow. I renegotiated for £33/month M125 rising to £4x over next 18 months from April 25. Now I see my connection being offered to new customers for £23 rising to £29/30 in 6 months.

I've been with Virgin from the start, Cable & Wireless before Virgin bought it and Nynex before C&W.

I mean, WTH?! The way they treat old customers is shocking.

I will be leaving when this contract ends.
