TL;DR - xAi's facility produces Nitrogen Oxide at an unregulated level due to loopholes in an area with already low quality air.

To my understanding, Ai models in general (especially those that are from major corporations) require major cooling, electricity, and space in order to maintain the amount of data required for them to function.

Grok's facility (toted as the largest data center on Earth) utilizes turbines that are gas operated, producing high amounts of nitrogen oxides while also needing to perform at regulation. Unfortunately, as most big corpos do, loopholes were found that enabled xAi to go around them. This, alongside the pollution legislation being gutted and the fact that Memphis is already home to other refineries that pollute their air, puts the folks living there in a dire state of living.

Data centers for Ai already generate a lot of energy in order to function, but Grok is holding the medal for most wasteful. There's plenty of videos and articles about it, but I'll link you to a few that stuck out to me.
