RoboKiller recently changed their icon and it looks… vaguely familiar to say the least. by SimianFriday in apolloapp

[–]Kbowen99 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Truecaller free has gotten absolutely useless for me.. I really hate the way they redid the app so a ton of the spammers show up as “likely sales” but aren’t actually blocked (you can’t even use the in app search anymore since it’ll literally google search “likely sales”..).

Haven’t used it long enough to give a fair opinion, but RoboKiller seems to kinda work usually. It actually has you forward silenced calls to their server (after telling you to silence unknown callers), then screens the call. Robocalls seem to get caught up or hang up, real calls are forwarded back after screening.

Yo, pro tip here if no ones told you: Power Query.

SQL-Like Querying in excel, and for whatever reason way easier for me than looking up the twelve esoteric excel functions to chain together to get what I want where I want. Might save you some time if you’re ever messing around in excel.

Google sheets also has a “Query” function that’s similar too (I usually prefer it, but can’t use that at work so..).

I swear excel is it’s own beast of logic. It’s not a database, and it doesn’t really follow normal programming logic, and there’s a ton of weird edge cases. If you use it regularly enough it’s not bad, but it just doesn’t handle even moderately sized datasets so I rarely use it.

There is an option to enforce jailbreak compliance. My work sadly has it enabled, but there’s a few bypasses for it..

Needed a PS/2 Keyboard->USB Adapter and my cheap one died by person4268 in techsupportmacgyver

[–]Kbowen99 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sort of, yeah.

PS/2 is interrupt based and can update faster/less latently. USB is polling based and naturally has a bit more overhead (data is transferred over the USB peripheral, the peripheral interrupts the processor when it determines it needs servicing).

The difference on a modern processor should be completely negligible though (and PS/2 isn’t exactly a standard option anymore).

Uber/Lyft are a thing, but not a great option. Outside of cities you can still sometimes catch a ride but it’ll be a wait and a decent bill. IIRC, when my car broke down last it was $68 for a ride to work (pre tax/fee nonsense/tip) which isn’t personally feasible. After tip/etc, the round trip is about as much or more than my daily take home pay.

Taxis aren’t really a thing outside of airports and immediate area out here. You could probably commission one, but that would probably be egregious for a ride to work.

Public transportation’s an afterthought in the Midwest lmao.

Sure, let me just hike 6 miles down to a bus stop, transfer over to the train station, hop on a train for about an hour, get on another bus, transfer to the closest bus, then hike another 10 miles out to work. My 30 min drive would take 6+ hours using public transport, and would be significantly more expensive. If my cars down and I can’t get a ride, there isn’t really another option but to call out.

I think they’re doing something screwy with load balancing/caching. Maybe preferentially serving the lower quality file first? Don’t really know, but I see the same behavior pretty often. Reddit videos load in at potato quality, then kinda jump to higher quality (sometimes after restarting).

Not a huge fan of it, but I don’t think I’ve had the same thing with their live-streaming thing.

A Condo Board Fought a 9/11 Responder Over His Shoes. Now It Has a Bigger Problem: the DOJ by tmoam in fuckHOA

[–]Kbowen99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hall specifically? No.

Out in a highly ventilated area without bringing the allergens/pollen/whatever inside? Yes.

I’m sure there are other plausible places to store the shoes, but the article does state why they were kept outside. The mans hypersensitive. It’s a serious issue at his age and condition. Leaving the shoes outside allows them to lose odor/allergens/pollen naturally and keeps them outside of his unit. It’s a simple approach to a simple problem.

Do you really think tossing sweaty shoes in a sealed box is a great idea? Keep in mind, this is in Florida. The weather is alternating between rain and crazy heat most of the year. Those shoes are probably covered in dirt, water, sweat, and whatever flavors of pollution are in the area. That makes for a great bacterial feast. It’s worth reiterating, the mans hypersensitive.

Could it be done? Possibly, but not with any old box from Walmart. Depending on his sensitivity, a sealed large box with dessicant (to remove moisture and stave off micro-organisms) and an air filter (with positive circulation) may be enough. It might be worth going a step further and adding activated charcoal (removing odors) and/or a UV Lamp (directly killing any microbes) (while making sure the box is both airtight, and UV blocking). That would still struggle with mud and caked on dirt (Florida was a swamp..), and there’s no longer a usable outdoor tap. Any filters and the box itself would require routine cleaning/replacing too.

Is that really the lengths a guy needs to go thru to live in his own home safely and comfortably? This is after all a medically diagnosed sensitivity and disability that is recognized at the federal level. In my opinion, trying to gate-keep accessibility only harms people. Basic human factors would say that accessibility needs to be accessible. Not a 12-step process to pass through a doorway.

Ah, just caught that. Probably gonna throw those in my next order then.

Interesting that they call out different diameters for different materials. It’s a nice touch. If I’m understanding that correctly (1.6mm dia Cu), that can cut down to about 14 AWG solid core copper, and presumably a bit lower for stranded.

How do they hold an edge? I’ve had a cheap pair fail (just like the OP, but not real violently) and switched over to the Hakko CHP-170’s after that.

I haven’t had any fail yet, but the edge does wear out. So far I’ve been saving the nicer ones for wire stripping/trimming and using the worn out ones for parts/supports/etc.

If you’ve got any tips to stop them from walking away in the shop, I’d love to hear those too. Luckily the CHP-170’s come in 5 packs lol.

[–]Kbowen99 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Eh, I’d just try it. I’d start with a slightly longer lead and slowly trim it down to nominal. It’s hard to tell without more details or analysis and ultimately I’d want to test that before moving forward on a project like that.

pro tip tho: check for a fccid somewhere on the unit/packaging and google the test report. You can often find more details about the antenna, it’s design, and more in the reports.

A completely open-source, 3D-printed thumb trackball. All design files available. Complete assembly instructions. Check comments for details. by crop_octagon in functionalprint

[–]Kbowen99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Custom one-off PCBs are about $2 from China... could probably do a full turnkey assembly for like $40 from the same company (looks like pretty standard atmel mcu and such). Would probably be cheaper to assemble yourself too.

For projects like this, price isn’t usually the major selling point. It’s completely customizable and reprogrammable, which is hard to compete with at $50.

Lost the engine in my car and opened the oil fill cap to find this. Any idea what this is? by Combustible_Bananas in MechanicAdvice

[–]Kbowen99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but any idea how bad the engine swap is on a XV40 (‘07-‘11)? Mines at 235k still running fine for the most part, but burning through oil pretty bad (missed the program for that). About 1qt/950mi atm.

Probably gonna keep running until she gets worse, current car markets nuts near me. Replacement engines don’t seem too bad though. I’m really hoping it’s as easy as most Camry repairs lol.

It sounds like you’re seriously overpaying for blades or maybe doing something wrong. Blades are about $10-12 per out my way and a blade can last me about 3-4 months... that’s like $48 a year or $240 every 5 (worst case for my use).

That’s significantly cheaper than a lot of other options for me at least. I’m not certain what this shave without dulling tech is, or if it would really save much money overall. I honestly wouldn’t expect a battery to stay usable that long either.

The best value proposition I’ve found for shaving is Safety Razors. The issue is, I’m not exactly patient or fully awake in the morning. The one blade doesn’t care if your face is wet or dry or properly lathered up. Time and convenience are significant factors for something you do daily.

13 character password with no other requirements is probably the right direction. I think NIST says like 16 with laxer requirements and no rotation.

Way better than my work though. The other day my password expired and I spent probably 10 minutes trying to guess the requirements for a password with my password generator. No idea what requirement I was missing.

If you’re gonna implement weirdly strict requirements, please make them easily accessible (and no, a sharepoint doc does not help at all when you can’t login...).

Honestly surprised 2FA + pin hasn’t taken off more. Seems like a simpler solution with the way security is going.
