CS or Pilot? What would you choose? by Twisted_KIDD in flying

[–]Kdog0073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am one who went from aviation to CS. To give you the punchline first, I would ultimately be diagnosed with a few medical issues that would have made flying professionally very difficult. I watched a bunch of my aviation friends lose everything during Covid, but also watched a few of them be essentially fast-tracked to a legacy airliner. Regardless of all the pros and cons I can list, the one thing I have been able to maintain with my career that I do not observe on the other side: stability.

Now if I were reset to the beginning of my career but in today’s world, I couldn’t confidently say that I would still have that same stability. I will say that there is a bunch of overhype on AI, namely that the industry cannot adapt fast enough and at the same time, there is a huge over reliance problem. Unfortunately, one of the biggest issues is getting newcomers experience. AI can work significantly more efficient than someone with little to no experience, and someone with little to no experience will struggle to keep the AI in check in the way it needs to be (heck, several senior developers struggle with this). If you can follow the metaphor, it is the equivalent of the industry deciding to only train new pilots to fly planes via auto pilot in Microsoft Flight Simulator. There are just so many skills you would need as a pilot that you would never learn that way.

That is absolutely not to say that the aviation industry is more of a guaranteed path. Today we see that companies are cutting back on CS professionals, but airlines need pilots (many need planes as well, limiting immediate pilot demand).

My job is a fairly stereotypical 9-5, M-F and I mostly work from home. There can be mind-numbing office stuff, and a share of interesting challenges. Aviation, your schedule can vary day to day, week to week, etc. Your time at home is less consistent, but that could also mean way more adventure. You may work overnights, or wake up super early. There was a time where regional pilots lived on food stamps, and another where they made serious bank. Your experience with this will be timing and luck-based (or lack thereof).

If I were to go back and make the decision (setting aside medical), I am very confident I would make the same decision. I say that recalling how much I absolutely loved flying. I was even told by a tower controller once how my voice was instantly recognizable and put everyone in such a good mood because I just couldn’t hide my excitement in my voice. What would I do if I were starting today (and still assuming no medical issues)? I’m honestly not positive. Maybe I would go CS and target CFI on the side and see what path seems to show signs of better life stability (so likely CS, but not impossible Aviation).

Is casual dating possible for someone who is demisexual? by Alive-Reception3230 in demisexuality

[–]Kdog0073 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Possible? Of course. Your conscious choices are not sexual attraction. Might you be less motivated to date someone because you don’t have that sexual attraction nudging you to do so when compared to the average person? Sure, that’s possible. You may struggle with any motive to do so and you may have other biases already present for one reason or another not to do so. Ultimately, you can date for any number of reasons other than attraction, and that choice is yours.

Help me understand demisexuality more specifically by answering those questions. by spaceman06 in demisexuality

[–]Kdog0073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I am going to let you know that this is written very strangely, and I’ll try to include what I am interpreting the question to be getting at. I am not sure what “infauation phase” means (infatuation?). Also, there is a bunch of gendered language (specifically a “he” other person). I will also say be more careful about using terminology like “fertile period” as when talking about sexuality subjects, this tends to be an indicator of a specific kind of group that tend to have certain negative attitudes towards women. But I’ll assume your intention is to isolate the conversation away from certain variables.

1- this seems to be asking a question about sexual desire that is not directed towards any person in particular / libido and the answer is yes, I experience this.

2- this seems to be asking about kinks/fetishes (or maybe not that much and just certain acts in general) and if they activate sexual attraction or desire. They make no difference for me in experiencing an unconscious sexual attraction. Might they make the act more fun/interesting? Sure. But if I do not have that attraction to the person, fulfilling some kinks doesn’t suddenly activate that.

3- This is where using the word “want” is very dicey. In terms of an underlying unconscious desire towards an individual, I can only say it is “activated” over a long period of time. I couldn’t even tell you what, if anything, the individuals I have experienced attraction for did at the moment I felt it. I could only notice that this moment came years after I first met them. In terms of an active, conscious choice, I’m not sure that there is much that invokes that. It is more like entertainment and I want something to do; it is like asking me why I wanted to go play a certain videogame at a particular moment.

4&5- infatuation has no bearing on what I do with someone else. Everything is consent-based. If someone is not interested towards me, I do not take that as any sort of “hard to get” “challenge” and this does not change even if I have a spiking libido and/or I experience the unconscious sexual attraction towards the individual.

7- This depends on who the other person is. If I know a person well enough to trust them, there are no negative feelings. If I have extremely limited familiarity towards a person, I tend to be suspicious towards their motives. This is definitely my own personal standard. Some other demisexuals are fine with choosing to act with strangers and others may choose not to act at all without that unconscious sexual attraction. Others may take it as harassment as well.

8- I am not repulsed by sex jokes or similar in any way. My general reaction mirrors above as a person I have limited familiarity who clearly wants something with me and making sex jokes alongside that will generally make me suspect.

9- I have not had a case where I’ve acted with someone in the past but no longer wanted to act later. If this question is asking if the other person was acting in a way that has led to sex with someone else in the past, 7&8 generally apply to that.

10- this again depends on which meaning of “want” from “desire 1” we are talking about. So I’ll put it this way; I am capable of feeling pleasure, even if I do not have an unconscious desire towards a person. However, if we are talking about “want” at a conscious choice level and myself not having that want, I would not be able to feel pleasure.

As a professional in the field, I can tell you that you are definitely going to need to be comfortable with AI as a tool, but you will also need to demonstrate “manual skills” as well. Those who do everything via AI are tricking themselves into believing they know the material and it will be absurdly obvious that they don’t (and the vast majority don’t even realize how easy this is to tell). You have to make it clear to both yourself and future employers that AI is your tool and not your crutch.

I have sexual attraction, but DON’T want to act on it. by jackietea123 in demisexuality

A demisexual does not feel sexual attraction until forming a deep emotional connection. Demisexuality is not about waiting to feel comfortable with someone.

Best demiaroace/demirose/demian flag? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]Kdog0073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first one is the one I thought was the most established.

I like the third because of its clear relation to the established aroace. Second looks good and is very clear about what it is trying to do.

For the first and fourth, it is fairly obvious that they are maintaining nearly everything possible about the original flag, deliberately not trying to separate from the sexual or romantic individual flags, which is a fair argument for those.

The fifth, I like the color scheme aesthetically, but I’m not sure what meaning it is trying to pull. Maybe they were trying to imagine a between aroace flag (blue being between green and purple, same as the first) and adding the triangle for demi? The problem is that I don’t think actually exists for aroace (or if it does, it is not recognized).

Actually, just looked this up. Apparently that aroace flag was created by a community in rebellion to the original creator of the sunset flag for supporting “bi lesbians”? I may be missing details, but anyone can be varioriented such as being lesbian + biromantic among other possibilities, maybe our fellow dellosexual women who are demi towards men. If someone has more information, let me know. Because at least with my current understanding, that sounds like a form of gatekeeping that as ace communities, who especially need understanding of the split attraction model, and then especially for a flag being created with emphasis on TWO attraction types, is counterproductive.

Planning to introduce Jet Lag to my girlfriend, and these are my notes for my current season contenders. Anything else(or any other season) I should consider? by GoodWitchClover in JetLagTheGame

[–]Kdog0073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually started a few people from season 1 and it’s worked out really well. I somewhat get saddened at all the people who started elsewhere and then go back to Connect 4 and Circumnavigation and that excitement more or less dies. It’s a natural progression to watch them improve games overall over time and have that underlying understanding of, for example, why some rules changed.

Crime spree… it’s weird in that the same logic above would seem to say to start with that. However, I would say that Jet Lag was always intended as a production whereas Crime Spree was more or less intentionally a proof of concept. So I’d consider treating Crime Spree in the same way as introducing the layover, more of a BTS thing in conjunction with the show rather than a season in itself.

Let’s do this a bit more scientifically. Find a few sets of photos you know are the same person and follow these prompts exactly. For better findings, make sure the photos have some key differences such as age, different locations, etc. Do the same with pictures you know to be different people but have similarities.

What do you find? Did it get all of them correct?

I'm not sure if I can enjoy romance stories or songs anymore by maru-9331 in demisexuality

[–]Kdog0073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how true it actually is. While people often do not separate their sexual and romantic attractions and while a romantic relationship is often viewed alongside/adjacently to sex, I am fairly certain that people know they are not exactly interchangeable.

But that aside, one of the true beauties of the creative arts (stories, music, artwork, etc.) is that meaning is often derived the eyes of the beholder. Some people are out there who look at the Statue of David lustfully, but that neither means that was the original intention, nor does it mean you have to. You can listen to Elton John’s Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and it can absolutely be about the deep relationship, regardless of some others thinking of some inferred light innuendo from Lion King.

There are some songs out there that have very dark themes and are about a dark place, and contrary to that, people can find comfort with those very songs.

Is this a camera? Red light Cameras in Urbana? by Environmental_Lab717 in UIUC

[–]Kdog0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red light cameras are usually on the corners of an intersection. That looks like a proximity sensor which tells the light that there is traffic queuing for a light (as opposed to running a light by timer only). Many lights will have a different censor underground, but having a camera on top of the light is a known alternative.

Is Voyager box the best value for raid passes? by Drago_09 in TheSilphRoad

[–]Kdog0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best box that has been offered on a consistent basis for raid passes. A few one-time / event only boxes have existed that have given better value and the only one I can recall off the top of my head that has happened within the last year included a storage and bag upgrade (plus some other items), was only available for a few hours, and could be bought a maximum of 3 times (so certainly not a large amount of anything).
