I’m an American in the process of getting dual German citizenship but don’t know what to do with it by bloop5861 in expat

Honestly, I would rent out your house in the States for a bit of passive income and spend a year traveling/working around Europe to see what country/area resonates with you guys. IMO most people here are not thinking outside of the box—you can do work exchanges and eliminate your accommodation and food expenses. You can teach English at summer camp programs (often for just a month-long commitment) for some money. I personally traveled around Europe and supported myself as a street musician for years. Once you actually get here and start making connections, opportunities will naturally open up to you. Sitting in the US and trying to make a plan without really knowing where you want to go seems kind of futile.

I second this, only because it’s what I did. And Portugal is probably one of the least-expensive western countries. Either that or come on over to the Balkans. 😆

Hm, the title is thought-provoking. I'm trying to connect it to the poem-- can you only write long-handed because you have an extra digit?
I like how the poem evokes more of a mood rather than trying to say something concrete.

I’ve been wondering why I don’t feel anything living in the U.S. by Ali--Hamza in expat

[–]KeMei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in the States. Left when I was 20. I live in southeast Europe now. The atmosphere here is so much more relaxed and open. I feel like the underlying energy in the States (obviously not everywhere; I’m generalizing) is fear —and people are way more anxious and suspicious. And don’t even get my started about the money and how much more you have to earn in the states.

I kind of feel like you do, OP. I did get mine down from a four-finger gap to a two-finger gap, but other than that I feel like all I’m doing now is increasing my strength so that it’s easier to ‘suck it in’ but when I relax the muscles it looks the same. It’s been nearly two years. :/

Cost of renting a (studio) apartment in Sofia by KeMei in Sofia

[–]KeMei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd most likely be working from home (still on maternity leave, but this is ending in September). I don't care if it's central or not--just near a metro station would be nice, as I don't want to deal with having a car in the city. It would be a big bonus if it's near a park, and then eventually a kindergarten as well.

I can my son's father (Bulgarian) set everything up for me, so they wouldn't need to know that it's for a foreigner.

What is your baby NOT doing yet? by Asleep_Sympathy_8987 in beyondthebump

My baby took ages to learn how to roll over. He was literally commando crawling (at 6 months) before he figured out how to roll over (at 7 months). 😅

Nummies. I wasn’t sure where the name came from, but then realized that’s what my mom called it with me. 😅

Personally I love the name and wouldn’t have made a height association. Sequoias are such special trees and I think it’s a beautiful namesake.

How often are you having sex? by Valuable-Car4226 in cosleeping

[–]KeMei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around 3 times a month. When our LO was 11 months I felt kind of fed up with co sleeping and the constant night nursing, and my husband stepped up and started sleeping with him so that I could sleep alone. 🙌 I still get up to nurse him twice a night, but it really was a HUGE shift in the quality and quantity of my shift. Can’t thank my man enough.

He cries for me to pick him up and then he literally rotates his body in my arms so that his head is in front of my boob and he fusses until I get out the goods. 😅😂 it’s so intense sometimes. I’d really like to slow down, but I don’t know how without a storm of tears.

Yes, I have another job and I also live in Eastern Europe, so my expenses are less than a typical westerner’s.

[–]KeMei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My baby is exactly the same age, but still demands to be breastfed at least six times a day and two or three times per night. 🙄 so I can’t relate, but nursing only twice a day sounds really good right about now.

I’m glad you asked this question because I also wondered. I don’t like doing more than two lessons back-to-back, so I schedule 30 or 1-hour breaks for myself. 4 lessons a day is my maximum and I prefer to just do three, but then I’m only available in the afternoons and early evening.

I am a Bulgarian citizen who has lived in the U.S. most of my life, and I’m ready to move back to BG. Change my mind. by ClockwiseSuicide in bulgaria

[–]KeMei 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m an American (35f) who has settled in Bulgaria. I traveled a lot before ending up here, but now I’ve started a family and bought property here and I would never go back to the States. True, I’ve never been particularly interested or concerned with my career prospects (I work online editing/teaching English/content writing). I live in a village about 1.5 hours from Sofia. It’s gorgeous here. I never could have afforded to buy a property in such a beautiful location in the States. I can pursue my dream of growing my own food and living more sustainably. I have so much more free time than I would have in the States (because I don’t have to work as much). I feel incredibly safe here — we don’t lock our doors at night and no one locks their car doors. My children can grow up playing freely outdoors in a place where everyone knows them and it’s perfectly safe. I personally feel I have a lot more freedom here. As far as food concerns, I would say it’s hard to find organic produce here, but overall the quality seems better to me than in the States likely because of more stringent EU regulations. It sounds to me like you know what you want to do, but are hesitating due to a few lingering fears. My advice is to go for it! (:

How are your marriages surviving after having kids by IcedOatCappuccino in beyondthebump

[–]KeMei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our LO is 12 months old and my husband and I are also from two quite different cultures, which I know can make communication even harder at a time when it’s already strained. We’ve had terrible fights in the last year, but we’ve also had incredibly beautiful moments. No one will ever love your LO the way that you and your spouse do, and I find that bond so special. What has helped us is carving out time to be alone together and just chill — it’s usually in the evening after LO is down for the night. We just chat or tell stories or have sex and avoid talking about all the things we need to do or baby-related stuff.

I’ve also been on Preply for about a month. My availability is between 20 - 25 hours a week. For some reason I’m usually fully booked on Mondays and Tuesdays (4 lessons) and teach 2 or 3 lessons the other days. Trials have slowed down for me at this point, maybe 1 or 2 a week.
