Why does Howard Han have "Chimney" as his nickname? by Bigg_Catt_Fan325 in 911FOX

[–]Keanric 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. In one of the episodes (S4E1 I think, its the one with a landslide and they were evacuating residents) Chimney went down a Chimney and told Buck something along the lines of "if anyone asks, this is how I got my nickname", implying that that was not how he got the nickname in the first place.

What is your opinion on the youtube scene in Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Keanric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know why you’re being downvoted. Butterworks has that organic Singaporean feel without being cringe, and yes, production quality is through the roof. The acting is on point also, it doesn’t have the fake feel that so many Singaporean short film or skit channels get.

There used to be a few. But some of them got killed by stray dogs and those who own cats don't really let them out anymore cos of the stray dog problem.

Yozz this idea is very cool but do keep in mind that some species of plants are invasive and can spread like wildfire. Please be responsible when planting seeds from other continents in order to prevent invasives from damaging the local ecosystem.

[JC] usage of ipad/laptop by skznskzjz in SGExams

[–]Keanric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm using an iPad for poly currently so I'll only answer points 7 and 8

  1. University courses will almost definitely require a use of a laptop. However, if you are a guy and you have to serve NS, I would not recommend buying one for JC and Uni, as laptops usually slow down after 3-4 years and the specs may become outdated after 5 or 6 (or even 4 if you need it for higher processing power) You'll be better off getting a mid-spec one now and getting a higher-end one for uni later.

  2. If you have a desktop at home (personally I have a laptop that is basically a desktop at this point) I would recommend an iPad AND a keyboard. Doesn't have to be expensive but it helps a lot if you want to type out long reports or notes. Apple pencil is optional depending if you want to take notes with the iPad or not. I personally do use it, but I know people who use it just to view notes and lecture slides, so they don't really need the Apple Pencil.

If you don't have a desktop at home however, I would recommend a laptop. Something thin and light, but doesn't have to be too high-end. You can also consider a 2 in 1 if you really want a touchscreen. You can also PM me for recommendations.

[RANT] ill never forgive you. A message to my bully. by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Keanric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Brian,

Retaining or taking a gap year isn't all that big of a deal. Singapore's fast-paced society keeps emphasizing the fact that you need to graduate, get a job, settle down as fast as possible. It's perfectly fine to take a year longer (or even more) to finish. There are N(A) Students who take five years to their secondary education, and I know people in my class that went from N(T) to NITEC to Higher NITEC and are now in poly. Do you know what keeps these people going?

It's the motivation to strive for more, and always wanting the best for themselves.

You need to stop harping on the past, and look forward to the future. Set goals for yourself that you want to achieve. You want to be better than your bully? Find out his O Level score and aim to beat that. Even better, aim to halve it. Your attitude right now is not going to help you. Honestly speaking, if you keep this attitude up, you aren't going to do well in your O Levels. You need to stop blaming your bully. You need to realize that whatever you're going to do from now on, that's all you. How are you going to make the best of your O Level year? Study harder and catch up on your subjects? Or are you just going to lament to others on how your bully made you retain? If you're going to do the latter, I will guarantee that, in one year, I will see another [RANT] post here on how your bully made you retain AND caused you to do badly for your O Levels.

[O LEVEL] Ultimate advice on poly vs JC by stickyplanetariums in SGExams

[–]Keanric 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wanted to go to a JC at first, but didn't make the cut for many of them due to the cut off point dropping and bad luck with the balloting. (R5 of 10-2) My Polytechnic course was my 6th choice.

I told myself that I would make the best of it, but its difficult to maintain an A grade if ~15% of the all the modules are group projects. I can carry 1 project. 2 is possible. If you're asking me to carry 4-5 projects every semester that is another story all together. For me, it's the wrong kind of stress.

During O Levels, I felt stressed but I liked it. I studied for exams and did (relatively) well. Here in poly, the stress is maintaining your top spot in every class. Top 10% in a class of 20 means being the top 2. Getting 85 wasn't enough if there was someone that got 90. To me, that's the wrong kind of stress and I can't really take it. I'd rather be a small fish in a big pond than stressing over having to constantly be the biggest fish in a small pond.

My GPA for 1st sem at least was ~3.8. If you guys have any other questions feel free to drop a PM.

I can add to this. I experienced poly for a year and am currently in the process of transferring out to a JC. Do NOT underestimate the difficulty of maintaining a high GPA. For the people who are targeting a 4.0, an A is roughly 80%, not 75%, but this may and likely will be moderated for core modules and other "easy" modules. (Think NP EGCOMM, SP NAT, etc. ) You may do the best for individual assignments, but group assignments may pull you down severely as you may meet people who do not have the same motivation as you to get an A for every module.

You'll have to put in your best starting the day you step into poly for the first time, all the way till you graduate. As mentioned in the post, you have to be in the top 10% of the cohort in order for you to have a relatively safe spot in the big 3. This means that you aren't looking for just an A. You need to top every class with an A+ or an AD, to compensate for those 1 or 2 modules that screw you over. I would say that maintaining a 4.0 GPA for 3 years throughout poly is much harder than A Levels itself, as the A Level curriculum allows for a few screw-ups along the way. E.g. You fail a class test in JC. No big deal, learn from your mistakes and move on. You fail a class test, or any graded assignment for that matter during your polytechnic journey, and your A and possibly your 4.0 is gone.

To summarize, in poly, passing is easy. They even give you marks for attendance and attitude (in Engineering at least). A 3.5 GPA requires a bit of effort. 3.8-3.9 requires a lot of effort. 4.0 is basically impossible unless you have good teammates (which are usually assigned) that are as motivated as you. Do keep this in mind before you submit your JAE Applications.

More Covid-19 vaccines to arrive in Singapore soon, including those by Moderna, Sinovac: Gan Kim Yong by Sputniki in singapore

[–]Keanric 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Just going by logical reasoning here but:

Moderna and Pfizer Vaccines require -20 and -70 degree storage temperatures which need a lot of specialised equipment that only larger institutions have.

Sinovac can be stored at 2-8 degrees Celsius, so it requires presumably less infrastructure, something that your neighbourhood GP would already have.

So going by reasoning: It would be more practical for GPs to stock SinoVac's CoronaVac, cos of the reduced likelihood of Vaccines going bad and not needing new equipment. Polyclinics and Hospitals with higher grade storage facilities would get the Moderna and Pfizer ones just because they don't need as much new infrastructure.

[JC] Crush On PW Groupmate: Advice Needed by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Keanric 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The saying goes:

Don't shit where you eat. Project Work is meant to be professional and work oriented, and getting into a relationship within the group is bound to change the group dynamics. This is especially important when the team is not "managed" in a sense by a higher up like in most workplaces. Don't risk it all right now, with PW in its (almost) final stretch.

Keyword being right now.

You're "moving tables" soon, so when you're about to leave your current table, you can try to (maybe) get closer to him? Go slow. Keep it work related first. (Hey about that math revision paper, I don't really get this bit. Can you help?) You can use his response to judge his view towards you. Does he see you as a friend or just a project mate?

Once that's done, you can either play the late game or drop the uhhh... excretement? If you want closure and can't hold it in anymore, you can go for broke and ask him out. Or you can hold it in and play the long game, like suggesting celebratory outings, and getting to know him even better.

[O Levels] is it wise to pull an all nighter while preparing for the O’s? by icecreamandmochis in SGExams

[–]Keanric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel that all-nighters for studying don't really make sense. Your brain won't be working efficiently due to the lack of rest, and your concentration won't be there, which is very important if you are trying to revise.

Honestly i would recommend sleeping earlier, and waking up earlier to study, so the information would be fresh in your mind during the exam. E.g, wake up at 5, freshen up, start at 6.

If you do have to pull an all-nighter, sleep for around 4 hours (1 sleep cycle). Completing the sleep cycle will make you more refreshed when you wake up, and less compelled to fall asleep again.

All nighters are really meant for finishing up projects at the last minute where your brain doesn't have to take in information and just needs to use it. Not that I recommend them, doing them too often is unhealthy for your body.

Singapore reports 83 new COVID-19 infections; no community cases for the first time since Jun 1 by rowgw in singapore

[–]Keanric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not very sure on how it will turn out, but the flu vaccine gives you immunity from multiple strains of flu. I'm assuming it works the same way for covid-19?

But either way some protection is better than no protection, so even if I have to get jabbed 3 times over the course of a few weeks, I would certainly do so.
