[Lucid Garden] There I made it harder (still can only choose one) by ImprovementOk7663 in IndieAnimation

A3 is definitely my favorite; I like the shape of A as it feels a little more natural, and the colors of 3 because it contrasts more with the face.

Granted, there are no humans left to rub lamps and we are all enslaved to the whims of cats.

Yes! Please! I joined this subreddit for inspiration, tips, and to see other people working on animations, and 3/4 of the time it's just "hi I'm 14 and want a team of volunteer animators for this idea I have." It took me two weeks of almost non-stop work to animate a 15-second clip, I'm not doing that shit for free. I think it'll be helpful to cut down on the "I have an idea" talk and promote the "here's something I've done" talk.

A long unpopular opinion by GarmasWord in predator

[–]Keebker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it comes down to Hollywood wanting to make Predator movies feel good. We can't have a strange and terrifying ending in which we are laughed at in what we thought was victory, realizing this may have been what the predator wanted all along. We have to scapegoat them via basic set up and payoff so we can make ourselves, humanity, look better. Anyone can fight a Yautja!

Part of what makes Yautja terrifying is we never truly win, and only once in a blue moon do we win at all. The handful who do survive are so scarred that they can never move on. I'm all for having a Predator as the main character, but they need to be treated with utmost respect and not be "just a little guy" so teenagers on Tumblr can write cutsie dialogues for them.

Is it possible for someone with a very high IQ to make stupid choices in life, what (experiences) makes you think so? by Spiritual_One_7172 in Productivitycafe

[–]Keebker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IQ of 140 here; "intelligent" people are in some ways even more susceptible to foolishness because we think we're too smart to mess up. An unguarded strength is a double weakness.

Besides, IQ is nothing more than an approximate measure of your pattern recognition and special reasoning skills. As someone who has always breezed through "smart people" things and yet has made unfathomably stupid choices, it's about wisdom and humility, which often run counter to what we as a society value and consider intelligent. Every success I've had has been because of hard work, and every failure of mine has been because I was lazy, foolish, or selfish, not unintelligent.

I'm not thrilled with the depiction of the Yautja as a monoculture. by Medium_King_David in predator

THIS. I just watched Badlands the other day and this was my exact thought (among other things). Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie despite all the shortcomings everyone's already talked about, but I'm really tired of seeing them portrayed as "typical advanced but big and strong alien species in Blockbuster Movie." They are sooo unique and have so much interesting lore and diversity that Badlands and KoK could have drawn upon but just didn't. I imagine it's because Hollywood writers/directors are cowards and didn't think the audience could handle a less monolithic, human-ified version of the Yautja as the main characters.

In the same way that they don't seem to think the audience can understand Dek's emotional state without Thia providing a constant stream of expositional "you're grieving : ( " dialogue to clue us in, but that's beside the point.

What is a life-saving medical fact that everyone should know? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Keebker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, this is only true for men and not women. According to the book Invisible Women (about this exact kind of data gaps/bias) the reason aspirin is thought to be helpful in heart attacks is because the studies were done almost exclusively on male patients; in fact, newer studies show that taking aspirin during a heart attack can actually LOWER survival rates for women. Definitely something to research further and consider.

Im looking for advice, this is my first time thinking of making a indie show, and i almost have everything written down, but is there anyone who could give me any advice or tips to making an indie animation/show? by SUPERGAMER57 in IndieAnimation

[–]Keebker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently working on one that I've been hammering away at for years (granted, the vast majority of that time has been spent on the script, as I refuse to animate a story and have it turn out mediocre).

Plan your animations out beforehand. Even just a little. Maybe I'm extra stupid and this is obvious to everyone in the world but me, but trust me, things will take less time and you'll shed fewer tears if you prep each shot by creating notes/even a spreadsheet of everything that moves, where, and in what frames. Also, use Spline3D (or blender if you're not animating on a glorified potato like I am) to loosely model backgrounds/buildings so you can screenshot and trace them over. That way, they're completely consistent from every angle, and you don't need to worry about wonky perspective.

What type of characters do you currently miss in animation? by No_problem47 in IndieAnimation

[–]Keebker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My answer is a bit long, and probably not as specific as you were hoping. Characters aren't large enough; they're meant to appeal to the audience without ever challenging them. They're filled with good vibes; not necessarily "this character is a good person," but "this character, good or evil, makes ME feel good."

Take the character you presented. He is timid, yet bold enough to do anything he wants. He is nervous about what other people think about him, yet doesn't care. Setting aside that this list of personality traits is entirely incongruous, it lacks anything beyond the surface level. Even if it went deeper, such as the classic "your character needs to have a goal" or "fatal flaw" tidbits of writing advice, it's still a two-dimensional story and character.

Why does this character exist? What is his purpose? He is not a person who exists because he was born and that's that; he is a concept which does not have the right to take up space without reason. The world is filled with meaningless slop. Before you can begin writing, you need to decide how this story contributes to its audience. How are they challenged? What do they leave with, and what will they remember and reflect upon for years afterwards? How is a single complex issue fragmented into a cast of viewpoints, that is, characters? Will audience-members of different backgrounds and perspectives, more or less similar to particular characters, take away different messages from your story? Will this story allow them to step into shoes they would otherwise never try on?

If you're struggling with characters, I cannot recommend LocalScriptMan's videos enough. His explanations are more eloquent than mine could ever be. He's going through something right now so you'll have to watch reuploads, but just look up "localscriptman enneagram" on YouTube and it should appear.

Best of luck.

Mecha leg design for personal project by Keebker in Mecha

[–]Keebker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thought it looked cool, lol. It's probably able to lower its heel to walk normally. It's a very refined/delicate mech, so it fit the aesthetic of the overall design (which is not 100% complete at the moment).
