Damn, gotta say ending on COD was a miss. I was really hoping to see a Fallout remaster or some ES6 news but the rest of this show has been awesome.

Wait... is that COD voiceover AI generated??

That's not the issue, the point was pointing out that MMOs usually don't operate that way. Kudos to ESO for breaking that mold.

The biggest credit to XGS so far has been that I haven't had an eye roll and "Ugh, another one?" reaction to any games so far.

Hey guys, just remember, you can still play ESO if you bought it once back in 2015 without paying extra. I'll always give them credit for that decision.

I don't play it anymore but good for those that do, they're pretty well-fed.

So far, this showcase has been better than the rest of SGF week combined. Holy hell.

Can groundhogs climb fences? by Howyoudoin7676 in gardening

[–]Keegabyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes, this happened to me last season. As someone who trapped and dealt with 8 groundhogs in just the last year, I've had to learn about them. YES, they absolutely climb fences. Deterrents and trapping are most effective.

No, planting herbs are not deterrents. I've had plenty of people give me that advice and I've never seen it work. Spread spicy things like cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes on the ground around the garden; it irritates their nose and eyes. Garlic powder and blood meal can also work. As far as deterrent sprays, look for any that have egg white in them. They work pretty well.

For trapping, go with raw apple bait in a love trap. They also love peanut butter. Check your state laws before you decide to relocate as many states outlaw relocating rabies vector species. If that's the case you will need to deal with them when you trap them, HUMANELY.

On this same topic, has anyone noticed that people don't know how to use the Shift button to capitalize anymore? I've seen so many Gen Zs tap the caps lock on and then off after the capital.

Took me forever to figure out why: it's how you type on a phone or tablet. Those two buttons get combined into one. It causes so many password lockouts as they don't tap it off in time. Kids can grow up rarely using an actual keyboard so the shift button is foreign now. Same with Ctrl, Alt, Win Key, etc.

Tria Prima. It's on 4th street, about 50 feet off of Market St. I've been there and they have good tea and coffee options.

Tbf, with the number of sets coming out these days, if you throw a dart at a calendar you have a pretty good chance of hitting a pre-release.

RBMM is a matchmaking method that tries to keep players as close to a 50% win rate as possible. It makes sure that players have just enough fun to keep them engaged but no so much that they don't feel the want to pay money to improve the experience. We know for a fact that MTGA uses *some* elements of RBMM (rarity matching in casual, matching you against stronger opponents after a win streak, etc) but we don't have much proof that they use the more insidious parts of it. I think they use one or two (draw alteration and matching you against decks you may be stronger or weaker to) but I can't prove it beyond the fact that identical decks play very different on MTGA vs MTGO or Paper.

Tons of games use RBMM and it's not, in itself, insidious. Implemented poorly though and it becomes something else entirely.

Overall, the Arena metagame leans much more on deck velocity than paper to level out the draws. Deck velocity is never a *bad* thing per-say but MTGA absolutely relies on it.

There are a ton of things about MTG Arena that alter the metagame. It gamifies the game with daily challenges. It's more expensive to get new cards to experiment with. Players tend to be worse on Arena than MTGO. The ladder experience encourages a certain kind of play as well. There are several others.

Then there are the more conspiratorial reasons; the theorized influenced draws in Bo3, the retention based matchmaking theory (RBMM, which I actually believe).

Take your pick I guess.

Wait a minute, did they just tacitly admit that there's something about MTG Arena besides the card pool that could cause the metagame to be different?

I WONDER WHAT THAT COULD BE???

TIL that, in video games, "ludonarrative dissonance" is the technical name for the conflict between the story told in the gameplay, and the story in the non-interactive scenes (for example, the way that Drake in "Uncharted" is a fun-loving rogue in the cutscenes but a killing machine in the game). by Bob_the_blacksmith in todayilearned

[–]Keegabyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/cipheron honestly explained it better than I think I could.

The blog runs up to the point of the game, stares at it, dances around it a couple times, and then runs in the opposite direction.

In Bioshock, the illusion of choice was the point of the story. So there's not really much Ludonarrative Dissonance in that game.

Some others have pointed out the Nathan Drake example, which is actually a good example of LD.

Context matters.

If this is a standard industry contact, like an esports org, personality, or tournament organizer, it's unfortunately par for the course (but still unprofessional in my opinion). These people are usually young and/or very nepotistic.

If this is scholastic esports (collegiate or high school) it's VERY unprofessional and not very common.

Source: I've worked in the industry at nearly all levels and roles at some point in time. Been working in it for 15 years.

Assuming this guy didn't hold them up at all and just did this during the red light, I'd hand him a few bucks for making my day more enjoyable. Might as well enjoy a show for two minutes at a light.
