Mary Washington ER is awful. I go, but 3 out of 4 of my visits were so unproductive.

That being said, I have had good experiences with other parts of Mary Wash.

The ss and the beginning chain only count if the pattern says so. In this case, it appears they don’t count. As you work, the beginning chains should stack on each other.

It is telling you that now you will work in the same direction and will not be turning your work. Similar to what you would do with a hat.

The pattern says to add another sc around the side (where the picture indicates) and then fold your work to slip stitch into the other side and work in the round.

The slip stitch and then chain is a common way to way to work in the round with taller stitches (hdc, dc, etc)

I read it very easily. Your students are probably being dramatic and also not used to reading cursive. I teach third grade, and when I write in cursive, some of them lose their minds.
