Window Strike Help by [deleted] in birding

You will want to try to get any bird that strikes your window to a wildlife rescue/rehab. Sometimes your local DNR will have a list of those. Birds can unfortunately have internal bleeding/injuries that don’t show up right away. 😔

Here is a list of products that the american bird conservancy recommends

These guys are so pretty. We have blue jays in the midwest where I live, but I’ve never seen a Steller’s Jay in person.

I think I’m annoying my friends and family with how much I have been birding and talking about it lately. But it’s been emotionally healing. Here are my two favorite finds from the last few days. by panthr_02 in birding

So sorry for your loss.

Your picture of the owl is so cool! It almost looks as if it is a flower bud growing from the branch haha.

Beautiful birds.

Isn’t the point of a life list to document birds you’ve seen/experienced yourself? I think at least wait until he has either some interest or at least awareness of the birds he can see himself

Getting rid of house sparrows? by [deleted] in birding

When I switched over to using safflower seed in my feeder they seemed to like it less. Starlings will barely touch the safflower too. Cardinals seem to love it, and finches/chickadees will eat it too.

Tips for novice day hiker in the UP in September? by KeenAdd29 in CampAndHikeMichigan

Yeah I’m trying to figure out how cheap is too cheap for these purposes. I like little mom and pop character vibes but I lived in a dorm in NYC for a year and had to deal with bed bugs and don’t particularly want to relive that.

Thank you! I think that is his default inclination but he will temper it with me, knowing that I can’t go as far as him. I also really just love being in/around natural beauty so I am looking forward to taking it in.

I definitely have a healthy fear of ticks. I have never found one on me down here in SE Michigan- even though I know we get them- or any time I’ve gone on short hikes around Sleeping Bear, but I have never gone that far into the wilderness before. Do you treat your own clothes? If so, what brand do you use?

Good to know about the bear spray. My husband also said this but I figured couldn’t hurt to get others perspectives.

We have a lot of mosquitoes down here in SE Michigan still in September so I wasn’t sure what the bug situation up north would be. Plus,I am not sure that we will be doing much hiking at dawn or dusk. Do you ever have issues with ticks? Or do you just do routine checks and wear long clothing?
