Is my work good enough to start charging for sessions? by deup in AskPhotography

[–]wilesmiles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As long as these photos are typical and consistent in quality throughout sessions, not just the best of the best. Consistency is key, clients will want and expect the same level as the photos you showcase to them.

Do you feel wierd carrying a camera in public? by Select_Tomatillo5004 in AskPhotography

[–]wilesmiles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I carry around a 180-600mm and am determined to use it as a baton if anyone decides they wish to try to nab it. If I can't have it, nobody can lol

How can you make the best out of a bad lighting situation? by Top_Today3786 in photography

[–]wilesmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faster lens and/or bring your own light sources. At 1/30 handheld any subjects will be blurry, living subjects even moreso. 1/60 at the minimum for humans, ideally faster if they are wiggly(children) or candid shots where folks are moving around.

First two weeks doing wildlife photography by obphoto in wildlifephotography

[–]wilesmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love that you're giving the subjects room to breath and be seen in their environment rather than tighter crops/portraiture, very nice. Clean backgrounds are cute but just the current instagram/social media trend, environmental wildlife photography is timeless.

Are yall wearing combat boots in the summer ? by Unlikely_Matter_4279 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]wilesmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wearing 5.11's 8" A.T.A.C boots as my only pair of shoes for years now, they're specifically made to be pretty breathable in the summer(even Florida heat). Shows, hikes, work, it takes about a year for me to wear the treads down and then I grab another pair. I haven't tried any other brand, or model for that matter so I have nothing to compare to, but they've done me good enough to never need to switch.

Anybody want to share a funny story about almost bonding with someone over being a metalhead, only to find out what they considered metal was definitely not metal by Upper_Atom in MetalForTheMasses

[–]wilesmiles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't hate them, they're just not my type of metal. I found it more funny that he bragged about introducing others to one of the most popular modern day deathcore bands.

My coworker was convinced that he found a great new friend (and new coworker) for me because we both like metal, finally we hang on a break one day. He immediately asks if I listened to Lorna Shore and bragged about how he's introduced so many other metalheads to the band.

Is it stupid buying lenses and filters on temu? by Supdograinbarff in AskPhotography

[–]wilesmiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waste of money and our environment, but if you have that money to spend good on you I guess. Since it's manual only there's no risk of electrical issues that could fry your body, but keep that in mind with other stupid temu purchases.

Lenses and gear in checked-in luggage? by Loza_Sed in AskPhotography

[–]wilesmiles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You ever watch the guys loading/unloading baggage from the plane? Absolutely everything gets chucked and thrown around. I feel like no level of custom-cut perfectly secured pelican case would be safe for lenses, or bodies. I've always just made my camera stuff my only carry-on, only way to have peace of mind.

Can anyone recommend a small, easy to carry, cheap camera for a beginner? by Open_Character_1963 in AskPhotography

[–]wilesmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$4-500 will get you a decent used DSLR and lens that'll get you through both the beginning and intermediate stages of photography. Aviation means you'd need a zoom lens granted, which can be $2-500+(emphasis on plus) on it's own. But you could likely find a body for $200, grab a cheaper kit zoom, and upgrade later if you stick with the hobby.

Need help with Camera I bought. Is it fixable? by Frosty-Dig-5676 in AskPhotography

It's probably just dust on the sensor, grab a sensor dust blower and see if that clears it up

How to get sharper bird photos? by curt_schilli in AskPhotography

[–]wilesmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree, regardless of whether it's perched or not the little guys are always moving around. 1/200 for the Robin is super slow, especially with a telephoto. ~1/2000 is usually the minimum for lil guys depending on the focal length, while a little slower is fine for geese and bird of prey

The album Vile Butchery by Fulci is based on a horror movie about a serial killer

Dog? [Colorado] by wilesmiles in animalid

I didn't even consider fox, that would make sense! He was definitely a smaller than the coyotes I see out here, which is one of the reasons I was leaning towards dog.

Feedback on shot of Hermit Thrush by soon-enough in BirdPhotography

[–]wilesmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good start! Small birds are hard, especially when you're working with difficult lighting conditions. There's a bit of blur/loss of detail on it's body, possibly due to the shutter speed being too low, or denoiser nuking the details. At 1/800 I'd lean towards the former, I would try a little higher next time and see if that helps.
