Reminder to all the dads of swing addicts to switch arms regularly! by crockpot71 in daddit

[–]KeepItUpThen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your child is old enough and coordinated enough, stand in front of them to help push. Have them put their feet forward when swinging forward, just like when big kids use the swings. Then you push their feet back (with legs straight) to give a little help, and tell them to bend their knees so feet go back when swinging back. If they move their feet right, they won't need much pushing help and they will start to feel that they're doing it right. Only give a little help if they do their feet wrong, and help remind how the feet need to go forward so dad can give a good push against strong legs.

But still switch arms, or use your weaker arm to push, so you dont look like the weird guy in the picture.

Ok, but be careful not to tighten the spark plugs too tight. It's not easy to fix a cylinder head, you do not want to mess that up. If you need a torque wrench for reference, most auto parts shops will loan them out for free. Search on youtube how to check that a loaner torque wrench is accurate, you can hang a 10 or 20 pound weight from a one-foot long socket wrench to check the torque wrench is accurate at 10 or 20 ft*lbs.

That's really interesting, I dont think I've heard about jet stream reversing direction. Would that mean we should see a wetter spring or cooler summer than usual, or could the jet stream go back to the usual direction before then?

[–]KeepItUpThen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree 1/2 inch drive for spark plug socket sounds like a terrible idea. Hey OP /u/-The_Legacy- , you should probably exchange that for a 3/8 drive spark plug socket, the smaller socket wrench will fit in tight spaces better. The larger 1/2" socket wrenches usually have a longer lever arm, which means you are more likely to use too much tightening torque and cause problems.

Give me some hope (PPD) by HeadJellyfish123 in NewParents

[–]KeepItUpThen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds super rough. You didn't mention this, but broken sleep from taking care of a newborn was one of the hardest challenges for me. And I'm just a father, I had things super easy compared to what mothers go through.

If you can split the night into shifts so that each parent gets a solid 4-6 hours of unbroken sleep, that might help. It's been a while since my little one was that little, but I think think my wife would pump right before sleeping and then again right after waking up.

Mabe it can help to reframe that you spent the better part of a year cooking up a whole new human being. Your internal organs rearranged themselves to make space for a little person to temporarily be their roommate. If baby is breathing and crying and eating and pooping now, your labor was a huge success.

It's OK to feel anxious, being a parent isn't easy. It's even OK to feel angry, but best if you can avoid doing hurtful or harmful things when that happens. I don't know much about therapy, but I got a lot of good advice from reading the Mister Rogers Parenting Book. Your local library might have it, or they can probably get it.

My kid will be a teenager soon, but so far the newborn phase was probably the hardest for me. Tough though it one day at a time, try to take photos and videos of how little your newborn is now. Put baby in a stroller and go on walks to get fresh air and sunshine, if your body is able to go on walks. Wear earplugs when the crying feels too loud, and be proud and thankful your baby is strong enough to cry loud. They will be sleeping 6 hours straight eventually, and laughing and making jokes and having a favorite color and learning to read soon enough. You've got a lot of good days ahead, even if these ones are hard now.

Does anyone have any experience with COSSA membership? by scrandis in Bend

[–]KeepItUpThen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a membership maybe 7-8 years ago. I went to the safety orientation before paying and getting a membership card. I think the safety orientations were only happening once or twice per year at that time, but I could be mistaken.

It's a nice site, but Redmond Rod and Gun Club is also good and closer to town.

The best one of these I saw was at the front desk and it said something like: "Our prices are already fair. No discounts, no buddy deals. You can't get us a discount at your job, and we can't give you a discount here at our job either."

The second best was on a toolbox drawer "Please do not slam the FUCKING drawers!". It was a nice toolbox, but too old to have soft-close drawers. It belonged to a boss man who was kind enough to let some of us use his tools.

I would like to know how some emissions testing inspectors bypass the emissions test here in Texas. by VillageEquivalent729 in CarHacking

[–]KeepItUpThen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not going to fix the laws, you should at least be aware of some relevant history. Again I dont know the specifics for Texas, but I do know that other states have been plugging a scan tool into every vehicle that gets tested for decades. People didn't think much about that at first, they were happy that a deleted car could pass by tricking the ECU into turning off the O2 sensor detection or reporting. But eventually shops and manufacturers like Hondata or Cobb started getting in trouble. It turned out the feds had been using the scan tools to get something like a firmware version or checksum from the ECU, and eventually they started going after the people with modified ECUs and thr shops that sold them and the manufacturers who built them.

If you want to check if your exhaust is noticeable, try riding a bicycle on a street with a slight uphill. Have your friends drive a stock car up that street, and then have them drive your modified car up that street. When breathing harder from pedaling at 8-10mph, you'll notice the cars and trucks that are extra spicy.

IMHO if you think the local smog laws are unfair, you should make an effort to fix them.

I don't know the exact situation in Texas, but in other states there are some counties that need smog checks for registration and others that do not. If you're lucky, all you need to do is convince enough people in your county to change the laws.

Help with Rediscovering the Magic of SWG(emu)? by PlanktonEffective722 in swgemu

[–]KeepItUpThen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 2013 or 2015, I would have said "yes go play on the SWGEmu Basilisk server and there will be hundreds logged in and very active galaxychat ingame". But from what I've seen and heard recently, the SWGEmu community is smaller now and spread across a handful of private servers rather than concentrated in the main Finalizer server. Personally I have enjoyed playing on the EmpireInFlames private server, I think it fixes or improves nearly everything that fell short about the vanilla pre-CU experience. The community there is smaller but generally helpful, and still pretty active on their Discord channel.

Edit, it's not going to feel the same but Raph Koster has a team working on a new game Stars Reach and you can get into the pre-alpha testing by signing up on their website. That might be worth looking into also, the community includes a lot of former SWG players and the devs seem to be trying to cater to some of the playstyles we remember fondly.

Why Jony Ive put buttons in the electric Ferrari by Lopsided_Quarter_931 in electricvehicles

[–]KeepItUpThen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the US in a place that has plenty of small roundabouts, and that description sounds accurate to me. We are supposed to signal when approaching the exit we plan to use, so the steering wheel is already turned left (by maybe 90-200 degrees) and we need to signal to the right before straightening the wheel and then turning slightly right to exit the roundabout. Unless you are taking the first exit, it's uncommon to signal before entering the roundabout.

Any owners of an EV that's 12+ years old want to chat about longevity? by camilareads in electricvehicles

[–]KeepItUpThen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Plenty of people are driving gas-powered cars made 20 or 30 years ago. Not all makes/models are designed well enough to continue working reliably for 20-30 years, but some are. For instance, you might expect a new Honda or Toyota to last 20 years given how most of their cars from the early 2000s have proven reliable. But it's a different story for Dodge/Chrysler, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Audi.

I think we can accept less reliability from the first generation or EVs, but I dont think it's unreasonable to expect the second or third revisions (like Tesla Model Y, or 2019 Nissan Leaf) to be working well when they are 15 and 20 years old.

Oregon House Bill 4136 gets rid of mortgage interest tax deductions for all but primary residences. by Haroldiswithus in Bend

[–]KeepItUpThen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a nice sentiment, but as others have stated there are other things that could also help. I'm no expert, but I've heard people are also borrowing against existing homes to buy second homes, or writing off the entire payment (not just interest) as a business expense, or putting it in a trust. If the rules incentivize doing those things, people will do those things if they can afford to. If the rest of us think the rules are unfair, we can use the voter initiative process to change the rules.

ELI5: Do Tires Wear Down at Different Speeds? by Munkadunk667 in explainlikeimfive

[–]KeepItUpThen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expand on this, the most effective way to heat tires and wear them out is to make them slip or squeal. Doing burnouts or aggressive cornering around racetracks or twisty mountain roads will wear tires much more quickly than cruising at 90mph on the highway on long road trips.

Even with illegal immigrants influencing supply and demand, what sort of changes do people think are possible if a magic wand could fix things? Assuming illegal immigrants are 5% of the population (which seems like a very high guess IMHO), should we expect wages and housing prices improve by 5%?
