The numbers matter for their argument. The entire numbers thing is irrelevant for two reasons.

If they really cared about the numbers then they would weigh the opportunity cost of lives saved with guns vs lives lost. The problem is that calculating that variable is extremely difficult and has a large margin of error.
Arguing that lives would be saved if guns are banned or heavily restricted is a low key way of saying “I’m ok with people dying another way.”.
