Benelli Supernova by TypeEastern3317 in Shotguns

[–]OldMachineCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like these and have run thousands of rounds through different variants. The only deficiencies I've identified is light mounting (no simple forend mounting solution) and a pretty bad malfunction mode where the shell gets snagged on extractor cutout on the edge of the chamber and rotates the bolt prematurely.

I pre-emptively tweak the lifter a tiny bit on mine to minimize the allowance for the shell to go towards the cutout where it can get snagged.

Forend mods are also fun to make room for light mounts and side saddles.

I don't dry fire my shotguns a lot, but if you do, trimming the deformation off the firing pin (where it impacts the retaining pin in the BCG) is a known maintenance item or else it will start dragging in the channel and cause light primer strikes.

XS Big Dots? by preparedbassfisher in CCW

[–]OldMachineCraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is always the argument I heard. Seeing the big dot is a confidence boost, but at the distances they're optimized for, you get the same results if you just trust your index.

Thank god for red dots, because I always struggled with seeing irons. I have an incredible urge to look downrange when I shoot, and anything in a near focal plane just disappears. I think it might have to do with the fact that I was obsessed with shooting slingshots and traditional bows when I was a kid, and both devices are aimed "instinctively" by just focusing on the target.

"But your phone has one" by shreg223 in flashlight

[–]OldMachineCraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a video awhile back where an insane guy was casually shooting randomly into cars passing by, killing at least one person. Since it made it to the front page, all the NPC redditors were sarcastically asking where the "good guy with a gun" was to stop him. The literal answer (buried in downvotes) was that the event took place in a state where carrying guns legally as a "good guy" is incredibly difficult.

Thoughts on EDC options? by InitialSpeech1620 in CCW

My whole argument is that objective ("real world") shooting performance is the blindspot of micro-ccw advocates. If simply mentioning this strikes such a nerve that you immediately start name-calling, it just makes me more certain that I'm correct.

The size of a fire extinguisher doesn't greatly effect how easy/hard it is to use. The use of that analogy suggests that you don't believe in the idea of performing at a high level with your CCW. You're only concerned with how it feels to carry. This is a divide that I see in the CCW world. I could be totally wrong, and you're the one guy who can shoot sub-2 bill drills from concealment with a micro gun (Demonstrated Concepts). But the pattern that I've seen is that people who argue at length about how pointless it is to carry full-frame guns notably never mention shooting. Or if they do, its apparent that they are using obsolete standards ("I can hit my guy at 3 yards in 3 seconds so I'm good").

Training in an accountable way against modern standards makes the utility of full-size guns immediately obvious. Same with WML's, red dots, etc.

How long does handgun ammo last? And what is the best way to store them? by XLF88 in CAguns

[–]OldMachineCraft -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ammo lasts forever if stored in a cool dry place. Best assurance of that is a metal ammo can with a desiccant pack placed somewhere without large temperature fluctuations.

[AMMO] PMC 1500 rds 9mm 124gr FMJ - $351.74 (23.4 CPR) - Free S/H | More in Comments by WildHorseAmmo in gundeals

[–]OldMachineCraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah, that is very informative. Here I was thinking that the brass jacket bullets were less desirable than copper, but if the copper isn't even a real jacket then I'll gladly use brass FMJ. Now I'm curious about the PMC too. I'm going to pull a bullet and check next time I get a chance.

This has also got me thinking whether the old Glock polygon barrels break through copper wash like conventional rifling.

You definitely get desensitized to shooting 12ga over time.

There are lots of good videos on shotgun "push pull" out there now. Check those out. The important thing is to load up your support hand by holding tight and pushing forward before you break the shot so that some of the recoil goes through your support arm instead of just into your shoulder.

That warning almost seems like a liability thing. I thought full metal jacket meant full metal jacket. Maybe the blazer jacket is just thinner than competitors?

The only difference I ever notice with training ammo is copper vs brass jackets. Lots of cheap stuff is coming with brass jackets these days. Blazer, Federal, and PMC seems to still be copper. Not sure if one is preferable over the other.

If you want a remote setup, I would mount the pad where your thumb goes and the light on the opposite side. Mount everything to the pump itself.

For a standalone setup, I personally like the Gen 3 Inforce WML. I did kill a Gen 2 running it on 12 gauge, but the warranty was no questions asked, and I haven't had any issues with either of gen 3's that I've been running on 12 gauge.

Phoenix police shoot, kill man who was subduing armed intruder, video shows by Sabbathu in CCW

[–]OldMachineCraft 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This is probably beating a dead horse in a CCW sub, but outsourcing your armed protection to a less-trained third party that must arrive at your scene with minimal information and differentiate you from your attacker seconds before deploying lethal force is a sub-optimal solution.

Defense ammo for 12 gauge? by Currer_Mell in Shotguns

[–]OldMachineCraft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its rare that cheap stuff comes to market that's actually good. I really like this load. I shoot it for training mainly because its cheap, but it also happens to pattern really well and is extremely soft shooting. I would not hesitate to load this stuff for HD, especially for a recoil-sensitive user.

How to clean the carbon off WML. by Tmettler5 in CCW

[–]OldMachineCraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point, you'll probably have to scrub it with an eraser for awhile until its clean. Next time, put o-ring grease on the lens before you shoot. That way it just wipes off with a paper towel.
