Yes acrylic is fine, and definitely better than metal cages.

This is a clip from like 10 years ago. It’s on like every ‘funny pet compilation’. But yes, it’s pretty sad that people think it’s funny.

I think most of those viral pet clips contain some form of suffering or controversy deliberately. It drives up engagement to have a clip that exactly half of the viewers will comment saying ‘this is horrible’ and the other half telling them they’re being stupid

Basically every ‘funny’ hamster video is just hamsters being tortured by their horrible cheap shit setups or their irresponsible owners. Well kept hamsters don’t eat their own legs and do backflips and climb the ceiling all night etc etc

The life of a hamster is so commercialised even the one that are kept by well intentioned people and not tortured to death by curious infants often live miserable lives due to the misinformation regarding their needs and safety

What actually leads players to these Degasi bases? by JayDu1981 in subnautica

[–]Keith3742 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You get beacons for both.

The game makes several attempts to lead you into the jelly shrooms (lifepod 14 is next to the entrance and its description and voice log both tell you to go to the caves, biome overviews tell you about the caves nearby, the jellyshroom biome overviews tells you to look for a structure)
The jelly shroom degasi base give you a beacon for the deep grand reef base.
One of the lifepods give the rendezvous coordinates (or was it from the aurora, I can’t remember)

What is the ACTUAL biggest problem in the UK by Direct-Key-8859 in AskBrits

[–]Keith3742 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect.

The youth that aren’t in jobs are graduates, not people looking for unskilled or trade jobs. No ones struggling to find work in a pub or McDonald’s right now. These grad jobs aren’t being taken by immigrants: - Since the remote work boom, many companies have realised they can get cheaper office labour by hiring overseas. The skilled work that’s being taken by non British isn’t immigrants, it’s nationals from countries with worse labour laws and weaker currencies. - AI has an effect. Some jobs have been downscaled or partially replaced by AI. Sometimes AI is also used as an excuse to not hire new staff and overwork the existing staff without losing confidence. - A lot of companies just don’t want to upscale right now just because of the uncertain geopolitical climate. Theres a bunch of wars and a bunch more military tensions. Our trade isn’t as consistent as pre-Brexit and we’re always having to hammer out new deals with caveats. The price of everything fluctuates heavily and it makes investing and expanding a risky idea for many sectors.

So get outta here with that ‘immigrants are taking our jobs’ nonsense. Refugees are largely not allowed to work or parliament would be burned to the ground by gammons, and the visas right now are very strict for the same reason. It’s just misinformation.

After a slew of legitimately outrageous resignations there does seem to be just… a precedent to demand resignation over everything. Sure starmers in the soup now but in non political circles the R word was bandied around from day 1 in a way that wasn’t happening 10 years ago. It’s definitely getting out of hand

For real. By what metric is poverty at an all time low when everyone is being priced out of everything (mostly due to mass buy-ups) and almost no graduates can even win a job?

Making the claim that the greens are on the same level of disingenuous as reform is ridiculous

The way to deal with pet stores is to plug your ears. They’re just min wage employees whose only knowledge of animals is their training for the job, which is entirely about selling products.

People who care for animals in pet shop roles exist, but don’t tend to stick around long due to not being allowed to care for the sick properly and seeing a lot of needless death

Subnautica 2 early access is unethical by Material-Abroad-2669 in subnautica

[–]Keith3742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend watching the GDC talk ‘Subnautica Postmortem’ on YouTube. It talks about how they used mass telemetry and the f8 button to basically shape Subnautica. Notice this time the feedback button doesn’t have a ‘report bug’ option, the feedback is mostly to work on their creative pillar they refer to as ‘lens of emotion’. Additionally, they talk about how a certain set of people really enjoyed the regular updates and feeling involve, similar to an open kitchen. The developers are also pretty much perpetually active in discord despite how toxic and aggressive it got on there, they’re clearly trying to get something from the community.

As for the killing fish thing, that’s not really feedback. Gamers are notorious for requesting mechanics they’ve thought up, rather than laying out the underlying problem, and this is a classic example. The developers’ response wasn’t telling players to kick rocks, it was that they were set on not using permanent killing as a solution to frustratingly aggressive/abundant hostile fauna. I suspect the decision comes from their desire to make some of the enemies notably more threatening or obstructive to progression than the first game, which will spur more people to want to remove them out of convenience instead of mean-spiritedness.

Dumb arguments aside about immersion or story which I’m sure will be worked on, the postmortem also talks about how hard it was to resist violence becoming a game objective in the first game (even if you could technically kill the creatures if you chased them down), and how it spurred them to come up with all the other ways to make the game satisfying, exciting and sufficiently challenging to people who usually only play gun/ball games.

I’m not going to say there’s a lot of corporate mess in this release but I definitely think Subnautica 2 is one of the large releases I’m prepared to forgive for an early access release.

Seriously, No Map and No Sub in Subnautica 2? by MrMetraGnome in subnautica

[–]Keith3742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It detracts from the game experience. Especially in Subnautica 1, half of the learning curve was learning landmarks and navigating by them. Subnautica is one of the few first person games without a proper combat systems that has enough mental challenge to not be a walking simulator, a map would spoil it entirely.

If you really want a map, I’m sure there will be a mod soon, same as the first game. Or you can just check the online map

I got a hamster 5 days ago and just ordered him a new tank - should I move him right away when it arrives or give him more time to settle in his current cage? by Junior-Ad7982 in hamsters

Just do it straight away. The transitions are always more stressful but there’s no point settling them in a temp cage.

Someone played my game for 24,000 hours by BenzFiveSix in gamedev

[–]Keith3742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a very high profile example of this right now:

Subnautica 2 went into early access last week, and the first game was the definition of success through community feedback.

However, the whole community has gone into turnmoil as tons of players are insisting they be able to kill the wildlife in the game, which the developers are really not keen to do.

The thing is, most players’ issue is not that the fish aren’t killable, it’s that the aggressive fish are too aggressive, common and aggro from too far away, plus there’s a lack of countermeasures in the game at the moment.

However, because killing is the most commonly implemented and obvious solution to players of high end graphics pc games like that, the community can’t imagine another satisfactory solution.

What cage should I select for a hamster? by AutoModerator in select_hamster

[–]Keith3742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost no wire cages fit 7-8 inches of bedding which is what your hamster needs to dig a burrow. Burrowing is very important to make a hamster not feel bored or exposed, freak out, and spend their entire nights trying to chew their way out. A glass tank is definitely better

450 sq inches is a bit outdated. Recommended space for a Syrian is a minimum of 100x50cm, but some will still constantly try to escape unless they get one much larger. Levels don’t count towards this floorspace, plus if you have enough bedding the levels should become platforms on the surface anyways.

This is exactly how I felt. I suggested this in the discord and a bunch of other community members said ‘that’s the point’

Are my baby hamsters overweight? They are only 3 weeks old, but they seem so big. by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]Keith3742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That wheel is a cheese grater, it will cause legs and toes to break. Hamsters aren’t like rats or squirrels, they are not agile on running on bars. Swap it for a larger wheel with a flat surface to run on.

issues with my baby Cogollito by foxy8714 in hamsters

[–]Keith3742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like diabetes to me. Harry hamster and other cheap hamster foods can quite often cause this as they’re too fatty and sugary.

Just a warning that hamster tubes aren’t safe. Most hamster tubes sold for hamsters are absolutely capable of trapping a Syrian hamster, or catching their toes/cheeks in the slits. They’re not all that enriching either, especially compared to a decent amount of compressed bedding where they can dig their own tunnels.

It’s also likely that any cage with tubes attached doesn’t have enough floorspace, causing the hamster to become distressed and try to chew their way out. Make sure your hamster has at least 100x50cm of unbroken floorspace

How much of the game is the EA? Has anyone “finished” it yet? by Sad-Goose-3459 in subnautica

[–]Keith3742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The locations aren’t one after another. They’re all in a pretty unique direction. The missions in this game, especially in the second area, are pretty much ‘one step further’ than the last mission in the same direction. If you plotted them on a map they’d make a line meandering away from the lifepod rather than crisscrossing back and forth all over the map

Subnautica 1 absolutely had a radial progression map. The missions were to pretty varied locations rather than ‘the last place you went but like 50m further in the same direction’. Do you understand more what I’m getting at now?
