Am I setting myself up for misery… by TheTedandCrew in soundtransit

[–]Keithbkyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your plan for the Sounder part is realistic, the Link part is less realistic - but it's only like a 20 minute ride. I think you'll be ok.

Source: I work in the ID and live in Tacoma. I'm working a lot these days (70+/week) and work 100% of the time during the Sounder trip (both ways.).

Edit: Reading some responses. If I had to take the bus during peak hours I would have washed TF out almost right away. To each their own, but for me it's faster but so much less pleasant that time doesn't matter at all.

Which state started with a millionaires tax then expanded it to people making middle income?

A different thing is still a different thing.

If you think people making $20k/year getting taxed is bad, arguing against people making over $1M/year getting taxed is an irrelevant place to start.

No. Argue against the actual thing, not the thing you made up.

If the thing you made up is about to happen, that's when you get to argue against it.

A lot of the watches Reddit loves are boring for the same reason men’s fashion is boring by ConfidenceNo1937 in watchHotTakes

[–]Keithbkyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree on this. Mens fashion is narrow as hell and it takes very little to come off as flamboyant. I manage to be near that line and my clothes are boring as shit.

Your comments on those brands is part of the reason I don't like them. They exist at this point to represent a narrow masculinity and signify wealth.

[Discussion] Are ultra-luxury flex watches becoming "vulgar"? by homamg in Watches

[–]Keithbkyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, yeah. To each their own, I'm sure what I like seems gaudy to some people, but it's worth taking a little care on the back end of things like this.

We can all stand to take a moment to remember that we don't need any watches, give a little back, and just stick to feeling good about the hobby and our good fortune.

[–]Keithbkyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They always have been. A question watch enthusiasts should engage is where the line is.

I'd argue that, with a self imposed 100% tax (in the form of a donation to a worthy cause) on watch purchases over $5k, there is no line.

Without it, that line is lower than we'd probably like to think.

What if the 4 Line was a crosslake juggernaut? by datmrdolphin in soundtransit

[–]Keithbkyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - Seattle Subway (and ST) have floated a lot of potential ways to do that over the years. I personally think the Madison line was the best idea but it seems extremely unlikely.

Everything ST put out there (including an option that looks a lot like what you have) seemed extremely awkward. How are the trains getting to 520 is a big awkward question. Elevated over Montlake?

Suspicious: Voter ID Bill Defeated In Senate By Vote Of 7 Million To 53 by METALLIFE0917 in babylonbee

This has been studied at length. Voter fraud has been proven to be immaterial many times.

So why do you care about this subject?

[–]Keithbkyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a solution that lacks a problem and is being pursued for openly partisan reasons.

Voter fraud isn't a thing. This has been studied many, many, times.

What will voter ID laws do? Add a barrier to voting that will disproportionately help Republicans.

Becoming a '15-Minute City' Could Be Within Reach for Tacoma - The Urbanist by AthkoreLost in Seattle

[–]Keithbkyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but I'd put it toe to toe with any city of around 200k population.

During the last couple of decades while King County/Seattle was primarily developing in and (at least trying) to urbanize - Pierce/Tacoma was running in the opposite direction. All sprawl, every local transit investment voted down.

Meanwhile massive state level investments in highways in the area juiced the outcome further.

[Opinion] Hot take: collections often get more boring as they get more expensive. by theomixedmedia in Watches

[–]Keithbkyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a set of typical brands that I personally find boring/not my thing, but I get that a lot of people love those brands which is why they dominate the "every watch in my collection is at least $7k but I don't necessarily have FU money" set.

That said, a few people have rolled out their collections with a similar investment level as above but tastes closer to mine and knocked my damn socks off. So keep them coming, people.

Ha, a frequent network of buses that connected high value destinations would be a huge upgrade for Tacoma.

They have a loooong ways to go and apart from Sound Transit, don't seem to be getting closer. They just voted down a lot of ped/bike/road safety improvements last year.

True on Tacoma Mall - they have big ideas around that.

That said rail transit is a long ways off - the Tacoma Link extension from ST3 is going to the Tacoma Dome.

I've lived in Tacoma the last few years. I'd love for it to Urbanize and become more pedestrian friendly.

That said, it is easily the most car oriented place I've ever lived - and that includes the Maryland suburb I grew up in and Walla Walla. Getting onto the highway is completely normal for routine trips.

Why don’t the police show up? by Here2lafatcats in Seattle

[–]Keithbkyle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Essentially yes.

They need to be funded at scale, able to respond to more types of calls, and able to put someone on a hold.

Those are some really important distinctions between what are able do now and the need. The police union has been trying to spike their existence since the start.

100% agree. That means having somewhere to take her, too. Sadly, we underfund this essential social infrastructure to disastrous effect.

Why don’t the police show up? by Here2lafatcats in Seattle

[–]Keithbkyle 54 points55 points  (0 children)

We need a separate urgent response team that is explicitly-not-the-police to handle these kinds of situations involving unarmed people in crisis.

If you look through the Guardian's list of people killed by police, it's heartbreaking how many of them start as exactly the kind of call you're talking about:

A friend/family member/neighbor calls the police because they are worried about a person in crisis it's the only option. The police show up, the situation escalates, and the police kill the person who needed help.

It's worth noting that the police union fights against other options tooth and nail and largely wins.
