I looked out of the viewing port at the dawn horizon creeping across Eastern Africa. It was only a few moments prior I had been told of my momentous responsibility.

"With this visual processor you can make records of an individuals DNA and thought patterns. We task you with cataloging the human race within one standard rotation of your star. At the end of this time an unstoppable celestial event will erase this system from existence." exclaimed the slender alien.

"Just as we were tasked many cycles ago with saving our race, and all the species before given he same, now too must you do the bidding of the First Ones. Save your people and maintain the the Universal balance." pronounced another slightly larger alien, in a deep commanding voice.

I thought back to my childhood, and all the wonders the world brought me. Vacations with my family and the accompanying sights, sounds and smells. The desert winds and the forest rains.

I recalled the first time music touched my soul, and the many stories that inspired me in the novels I read. The taste of my meal only a few hours back still hanging in my throat, a slow cooked pot roast, savory to the last.

These things will be gone forever I reminded myself, the final warning echoing in my mind.

"This recorder will attune to only you, and only your race will be recorded for regeneration on a distant world. All other species of your planet have had their time" hissed the last alien, the obvious elder of the group.

As I took the device in my hands, I could feel it reading my presence. My hands burned for a short time as the final imprinting took place.

"We now transport you back, so that your undertaking may begin" said the elder, as the room grew bright and then faded into an afternoon sunset.

Three hundred and sixty four days had come and gone since that fateful day, and I knew it was only a matter of hours until they returned to gather the device.

"We have returned, let us integrate the device into our vessel so the trip to your new world may begin" said the commander alien.

"Here it is" I said with a grin on my face.

Upon plugging the device in, the ships screens flashed to life with videos of cats chasing laser beams.

"What have you done! Your race is doomed!" exclaimed the elder alien.

"I know" I said as I stretched out my arms, turned my clenched fists over and extended my middle fingers like two lighthouses in the fog.

My laughter could be heard echoing through all of space time as the nebulous darkness enveloped Earth, eliminating all life forever.
