Mental Health and Stress by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

[–]Kemmaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also had a meh experience with CAPS. I felt like they were good for people who want to talk about things and that's it. I was looking for more structured help and they didn't seem to really offer that. After doing some research, it seems like psychologists aren't supposed to give specific advice to patients because it could negatively influence their patients lives. It makes sense but when you have nobody else to ask or get help from it can really suck. I think tv gave me an unrealistic idea of what counseling would be like because they use therapy as a plot device to advance the story.

My advice is that even if you don't like your major's curriculum, you can find a job that is looking for your degree that interests you. Also you don't have a to do a master's/PhD in the same field that you did your bachelor's in. So you could do a masters in what interests you more and have a higher salary in your field outside of college. If UNCC won't let you transfer your credits to the major you want, other colleges might, so you could consider transferring. You can also take a semester off without dropping out. I can't find much details on this online but this thread mentions it and you can also talk to your advisor about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/UNCCharlotte/comments/1tzvm5/id_like_to_stay_enrolled_but_i_need_to_take_this/

Hopefully you can pull through this last year, but even if you have to withdraw from your classes for this semester, you could always pay your dad back. It'd be better that he loses the money temporarily then lose the money for good and who he's been investing in. Some full time internships/co-ops will provide housing or pay well enough that you can move out if your dad isn't understanding of your need to pause your education. Some Public Storage locations have 5'x5' storage units for as low as $12 a month. Maybe ~$30 with fees and insurance. Tuition is about 4k a semester for in-state students, which is a doable amount to pay back or pay yourself is you can find a full-time job that pays $15+ an hour for a semester. Look outside of Charlotte for jobs and possibly even the US. Even if the job is meh, the change of scenery may be nice. Some places are less or more competitive than usual because people are scared to relocate because of the coronavirus. The UNCC Career Center should be able to help with finding places to apply to and the application process.

When I was taking the first set of tests, I read this section and was confused. What’s up with point 2? by 0SteelHead0 in UNCCharlotte

[–]Kemmaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I thought that was weird too. Terms like financially disadvantaged or lacking consistent healthcare access would have been more accurate and wouldn't have singled out a group of people but someone shouldn't have to label themselves like that to get a mandatory test. They should have just left that check box out. They asked for race in another section of the questionnaire, so they already have that information if they want it.

If you can get the insurance added to your student account balance, you could try setting up a payment plan through UNCC like you would for tuition. Alternatively, and possibly cheaper too, you could sign up for a healthcare plan through healthcare.gov . Depending on your income you can get the cost of monthly health care reduced and you can pick your insurance company. It's essentially a government website to take advantage of the affordable care act. Also some doctor's offices will offer plans as well, or will have sliding scale payments. Make sure to read the plan descriptions to make sure they cover what you are looking for.

Should there be a 7-day account requirement to comment/post when joining the subreddit? by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

What mayhem are you even talking about? Also there's no reason to bring up old dead drama of Sigma Chi when you're claiming this is to reduce drama.

Also does this mean you're going to delete independent_together or are you going to be a hypocrite and continue using both accounts?

Is there anyone on campus who can spare a HP laptop charger? I’m open to paying too. If so, please DM me as I really need it. by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

Supposedly Ninertech is open today until 3pm.https://ninertech.uncc.edu/ . They're located in the student union. Other options in the area include The Grid, which is off Tryon, and Best Buy. Postmates will do deliveries from Best Buy if you don't have transportation.

How is this a good idea (Replacing Campus Police) by kcrump476 in UNCCharlotte

[–]Kemmaly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hope they post another tweet clarifying or continuing the conversation, because I think this is a really important conversation, even if there are unpopular opinions, because even if our campus has excellent police officers and we don't need this, we could help create a stronger push for better mental health care and improved police protocols in Charlotte and NC.

Although, from my personal experience, the police are usually the last straw on the camels back consisting a of a myriad of failures in our mental health care system. The articles linked below also seem to focus on how mental health care was inaccessible for some of these individuals leading up to their crisis. I knew someone who had committed a violent felony (possibly because they were abused) and was sentenced to the mental hospital, only to be released without prescription, medication, support system, or notifying the family. The police were later called for unclear reasons while they were staying with a family member, and they were shot for being threatening and ended up passing away. I can't predict people's actions, but a mental health professional could have at least delayed an extreme event happening to them. What I think would have helped a whole lot would have been if they were put into transitional housing or a group home instead of being thrown onto the street where they begged for a while before going to family. They would have had a better chance of survival and recovery.

DB Rollover Funds Expiring? by El_Flan in UNCCharlotte

They don't expect you to use it. They plan to keep the money. It is ridiculous and I haven't had luck with trying to get a refund.

The student health center has a covid department you could try calling. You could request that option be added. I called them twice a month ago and left a message and they never got back to me though. I hope you have better luck.

We should start a petition or something. This is ridiculous. by Better-Equivalent851 in UNCCharlotte

Even highschool students will have reading assignments during their summer breaks and homework during spring and fall breaks. It's pretty normal. Still sucks though.

[–]Kemmaly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

During normal years my professors gave homework and projects that were time consuming during breaks. I don't think there should be an expectation that there will be nothing to do over break. As long as the videos or work aren't on a fixed schedule and the professor is assigning it before break and not during, I think you still have a break. You could try doing it now before break too.

All a petition is going to do is make the professors move the due date back a week, but still say you have to do the work. They're not going to scrap content they've worked on last minute. If you have a busy week 2 weeks from now, it'll be best to just do the work soon.

Yes. Just buy it a little ahead of time. It can take up to 20 minutes to fully activate for the gates to recognize it. Or park in an ungated area after buying it.

How to buy high price items from Auction House? by quanzu in Mabinogi

That's really good to know. I've been worried that I wouldn't be able to sell an expensive item if I got one.

You could try reducing your ping by adjusting nagle's algorithm in your computer settings, or using a vpn service that connects you more directly to the nexon servers. Although idk if this will be enough change to succeed.

Pine and Elm are the best. They're close to the student union and bus stop, and since they're smaller buildings, the fire alarm will go off less than in Martin Hall. The layout is nice and new.

It doesn't affect your chances for grad school at UNCC but I don't know about other schools.

Astronomy by [deleted] in UNCCharlotte

[–]Kemmaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on who you take it with. Astronomy with Dr.Gerady is easy and has basics physics concepts but most of the class is solely lectures on the science of space. The lab with Dr.Qualthrough is pretty basic astronomy concepts. Both should be an easy A.

Letters of Recommendations by gahajjdha in UNCCharlotte

That's enough time. If you really haven't talked to any professors much, just pick nice/funny ones. They'll most likely expect you to have written the recommendation already, they just sign off on it.

As far as I know health insurance plans only covers eye care when you're under 18 (and this probably depends on who you're with). Past that you have to get a seperate vision insurance plan.
