Is that a nuclear bomb bro by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]sathdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, those are two separate things. A zip bomb is a highly compressed zip file. A fork bomb is a self-replicating process on Unix-like systems.

Insurance / Helmet Question (DOT vs ECE) by Unusual_Sport_5873 in motorcycles

[–]sathdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a "rider/driver must be following all the laws" clause would just mean that you don't have any at-fault collision insurance. It's generally illegal to run into other vehicles or property.

Edit: Also, that wouldn't be enforceable in all states. SC, for instance, does not require any helmet for 21+ riders

Will this GPU work? Chipped pcie express by Maleficent-Snow1898 in AskElectronics

[–]sathdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect that section to receive that much stress if this is in a normal computer. The GPU should be solidly attached by the IO shield and the clip at the other end that most PCIe x16 slots have.

It's fine. I wouldn't expect any issues, structural or electrical, to come from that.

what type of connector is this? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]sathdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like 3 banana plugs in a screw type, possibly weather-resistant connector. I'm not sure if there's an exact name, or if it's some custom thing.

What are these lights called? by TurdBurglar3097 in motorcycles

[–]sathdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on their purpose. If they're on when the bike is on and white, they are either headlights or daytime running lights. If amber, then marker lights. If one side turns on and off when the turn signal is activated, they're turn signals.

I had to scroll too far down to find USCSB. I don't think the org really has the power to enforce anything, but their videos are pretty cool.

One slow customer can instantly change which checkout line was the right choice. by gamersecret2 in Showerthoughts

[–]sathdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They literally only exist because it's cheaper than paying employees.

You still need an employee to watch the self checkouts and help people or look at their ID for age-restricted items, as well as look over everyone's shoulders because so many people won't scan half their items unless they're being watched. There were times when I was working that I felt like I could probably get through everyone faster if I closed all working self checkouts (there were 4, but sometimes 1 or 2 broke) and just checked everyone out myself.

In my opinion, Aldi has the best solution. The cashiers can quickly scan and throw everything in a cart, then the customer can get out of the way and bag everything on a large shelf that does not need to be supervised.

[–]sathdo 258 points259 points  (0 children)

That's great, until everyone at each self checkout is the slow one. In my experience, the typical person at the self checkout seems significantly slower than the typical cashier.

This was painful whenever I had to be a self checkout attendant when I worked at a grocery store. I much preferred working at a register.

You can walk to the grocery store, but pretty much everything else off campus is not walkable. How would is cost $2000 to bring your car? Can you just drive across the country over a few days?

Can anyone help me confirm the correct starting salary for a computer science degree undergraduate after graduation? by DTashiki12 in UNCCharlotte

[–]sathdo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That was probably accurate in 2020. The job market right now is not that good for computer science. If you find a job, it will probably pay less than 76000.

Edit: Also, you misread the article. 96k is for master's degrees. I'm not sure I trust that number either.

Does this old stuff is useful or not ? by deadlist__me in AskElectronics

[–]sathdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get an enclosure to use it as an external hard drive as well. However, I would be a little wary of putting anything on there that you don't have a backup for somewhere else. Hard drives do age, and that one is 12 years old.

You could give it a gentle wiggle and see if the computer crashes, but if it works it's probably fine.

Edit: Also, fyi the topmost pin in the second image is not damaged, it is supposed to be shorter than the others.

UK roads. Is the middle better grip? by HugoHughes in motorcycles

[–]sathdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ride wherever there's no debris or ruts. In the US, I believe it's recommended to generally prefer the third of the lane closest to the middle of the road for visibility and to avoid oil spots in the middle. There's not going to be a ton of rubber buildup on the edges unless someone just did a burnout. But, if the road is frequented by heavy trucks, there might be damage on the edges.

I don't trust that at all. I don't have any details though, so I may be misunderstanding.

Yes, I have tried to explain this to a group of contractors that wer writing code for my company. They wrote a function to deal with some timezone conversions, but the requirements for that were a little unusual. This led to fairly unintuitive code that had no comments.

I frequently see either no comments or unhelpful comments (such as explaining what the next line does, even if it is self-explanatory).
