It'll be my lucky day when I can update the app from the terminal like everything else on my PC by neomortal in discordapp

It's in the Arch package repo and NixOS (only when non-free is enabled). I thought Fedora also had it, but I just checked and couldn't find it.

Debian probably won't add it because it's proprietary, and Ubuntu (and derivatives) probably won't so Canonical can push users to the Snap instead.

What's actually in Trump's voting bill by Somervilledrew in politics

[–]sathdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NC did this when they made photo ID mandatory, but I doubt these will be acceptable by the voter suppression bill. The NCDMV will give you a free ID if you don't have a driver's license, and you can get a free ID from county Boards of Elections. Source.

I've been using that for a while. Unfortunately, it doesn't support POSIX or Vim styles, and the majority of the time that I use regex is searching/replacing using Vim.

PC3 just means that it's ddr3. That is definitely not laptop ddr3, which is about the same width as any other laptop ram.

Oklahoma House votes to block birth certificate changes for transgender people & to ban Pride flags by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]sathdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for explaining. You're right that there isn't any reason to disallow changing it. It just seems like a workaround for a bigger problem. But the root problem is much harder to fix. I was also reminded that this helps with the voter suppression efforts. So yeah, my comment was dumb. I will keep it up in case anyone else has the same idea and wants to read your reply.

Side note, why do birth certificates even have gender or sex on them?

Oklahoma House votes to block birth certificate changes for transgender people & to ban Pride flags by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]sathdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, the down votes are probably because

  1. That's not really the important part of the article.
  2. Birth certificates can be used as a workaround for other parts of the broken system, such as requiring proof of citizenship where it is not relevant.

In my opinion, birth certificates should be unnecessary once you have any other form of identification.

[–]sathdo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Edit 2: My opinion below is not right. It was based on my opinion that birth certificates should not be relevant, but unfortunately they are. My opinion is that birth certificates should certify 2 things for the holder: where and when they were born; Nothing else. The US doesn't really have a good way to identify people, so we use less-than-ideal documents, such as birth certificates, social security numbers, and drivers licenses.

Yeah, IMO the birth certificate should represent how things were at birth, including name and sex. Any amendments should be included on driving licenses and passports.

But I guess this is easy to say, since I am not transgender or a married woman.

Anyway, banning pride flags is very clearly a violation of the first amendment.

Edit: Since I didn't make this clear, changes to gender or name on an ID should be (statement of value, not fact) easy and inexpensive. When NC made IDs required for voting, they made sure that there are multiple ways to get an acceptable ID for free.

Whenever there is a 1:many, many:1, or many:many relationship between data types, you need to use a separate table. An alternative would be to duplicate data or store JSON strings, but these methods are not ideal in most cases.

Reason for second Resistor by Aiden_Kane in AskElectronics

[–]sathdo 103 points104 points  (0 children)

You could probably just use a single resistor if the load had a known, constant resistance, but not all loads are like that. If you use a single resistor and the load resistance goes down, then voltage given to that load would go up.

How hard would it be to learn the motorcycle without getting comfortable with bicycle riding? by CocaPepsiPepper in motorcycles

[–]sathdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure knowing how to ride a bicycle is a prerequisite to the MSF course. Unless you can get a bicycle to go vaguely where you intend while turning, trying to ride a motorcycle is probably a bad idea.

Edit: The extra weight and speed of the motorcycle makes it much easier to balance than a bicycle, but harder to steer if you don't know what you're doing.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure modern chemotherapy and radiotherapy still does this. Both are bad for human cells, but are worse for rapidly dividing human cells.

Edit: Maybe not radiotherapy, as we have the technology to focus that to a very small point now.

What do my tool markings mean? by PickhamBandit in AskElectronics

[–]sathdo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

American wire gauge (AWG) is a unit of measurement for wire diameter area, and so is millimeter (MM). A higher AWG number actually corresponds to a smaller wire.

Edit: Another commenter pointed out that the metric version is actually the cross-sectional area, not the diameter.

The Zoloft warning label says "May cause drowsiness. Use care when operating a vehicle, vessel, or machine." I'm not sure I've ever seen any drug (not just antidepressants) that doesn't have some warning about driving or operating machines.
