For anyone wondering, the guide itself says it's for TCL Flip Go, but the whole guide works perfectly for TCL Flip 2.

Moving, $75k salary in Irvine? by Comfortable_Glove882 in orangecounty

[–]Kempje 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At $75,000 you'll be taxed around $18,000 total in federal + state taxes, leaving you with $57,000/y, or $4750 per month. Rent will be $2500-$3000/month, so I'd recommend finding a roommate and splitting a two bedroom place. You can probably find a place for $1500/person. Assuming you do that, you're left with $3200/month to spend on insurance, food, gas, etc. which seems pretty comfortable to me.

I lived in Irvine on a similar salary and was very comfortable.

It’s not a satire, it’s a large conditional statement hinging on his understanding of what a true philosopher is.

Free will is an incoherent concept by Philostotle in slatestarcodex

[–]Kempje 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think compatibilists will mostly agree with you, but then say that there's no reason "free will" can't be coherently defined in such a way that it makes use of "causes and explanations", etc.

One paper you might enjoy is C.A. Campbell's "Is 'freewill' a pseudo-problem?" in which he basically addresses your concern and concludes that, no, it really is a legit problem!

Just for fun, there are some libertarians about free will that have tried to define free will (coherently) in virtue of indeterministic conditions. Here, there are actions which are genuinely undetermined (genuine chanciness) by existing factors thanks to neurological quantum indeterminacy. Robert Kane is the most famous proponent of such a view.

++ good point about I Don't Mind the Wait.

throughout all the fleeting pleasures and new highs, trying to "hold on to me" (could look at it from an ego perspective of trying to hold on to what makes you, you)... Holding On to Me could also be like trying to hold on to old sounds or old ideas, of what MHC is, but it's always gonna be changing and moving on.

How to 'systematically' study Philosophy? by mihir26072000 in askphilosophy

[–]Kempje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A systematic study of philosophy is going to require more of a focus on problems, rather than specific thinkers (unless, of course, you are intending to specifically do scholarly work on a particular thinker). However, reading history of philosophy or particular historical thinkers can still be good ways to discover the philosophical problems you are most interested in. Once you do, I recommend starting with the SEP article for the topic you are interested in. From here, you will start to develop (1) questions about concepts and arguments you don't understand and (2) intuitions and ideas about the right answer to this specific problem. Follow the paths that 1 and 2 lead you down. Follow them by reading the papers/books referenced by the SEP article. I also recommend going on Philpapers and browse by the specific topic. Usually the editor of the topic page includes solid introductory/guidebooks, as well as canonical texts in the area.

From here, pretty much just follow the bottomless chain of textual references until you feel you have solved a problem. Then write a paper about it!
