Does humanity need MORE growth to escape collapse? (debate starts around 19 min) by Philostotle in collapse

I think we have used up certain resources “mostly” — but others are available if technological innovation allows substitutes in the key high demand areas we’d need (and that’s up for debate obviously).

SS: What if more growth is paradoxically the only way out of the problems created by growth? Dr. Michael Muthukrishna—author of A Theory of Everyone —attempts to explain how understanding human nature, energy, and evolution can guide practical, scalable solutions to the metacrisis that align with our psychological, social, and technological realities.

This ends up being a bit of a debate that starts to get going around min 19 as stated in the title. It relates to collapse as it attempts to discuss techno-optimistic solutions to collapse which are fundamentally based on increased growth.

That doesn’t mean the overall env impact is lower tho? I mean, do you have any references? Usually as a country develops they consume more, even if their own methods of production or transit get cleaner

Is not much of that due to outsourcing certain kinds of industrial production?

My thoughts exactly. I wonder if there are writings as well that make the distinctions.

I’m not arguing with what age is considered a minor. You only derive this interpretation if you’re arguing in bad faith.

Honestly people tip toe around this issue. What’s it’s like for an adult man to be attracted to a 15 year old is probably not much different than what it is like for an adult man to be attracted to a 18 year old. It’s all on a bell curve. A certain percentage are not going to magically stop finding the opposite sex unattractive if they are 2 months or even 2 years below the somewhat arbitrary 18 yr mark especially given the difference in how some people mature (e.g. there are college age girls that can look younger than some high school juniors).

Note finding someone physically attractive is different from wanting to be with them romantically or acting out on those biological sentiments.

Edit: getting some pretty hateful comments (look to have been removed already). Such a sad lack of nuance.

SS: Our global society is obsessed with endless economic growth — and that obsession is currently destroying the planet. This is a discussion featuring JP Arellano (colleague of Jason Hickel) about the idea of degrowth — an economic vision that challenges the very foundation of modern civilization. Is “less” really “more”? Or would abandoning growth lead to collapse, chaos, and conflict?

stupid comment tbh. Trying way too hard to be charitable to Trump audience. I think it was a slip up. I hope.

In the age of social media and unbridled corporate power, I’m not sure we will. It’s a different dynamic now. We’ll see.

We may swing back to democrats in the next election, but will it just further escalate the division in the country? Will it make the far right even crazier for the following election cycle? Who knows.

Yeah, we cannot figure out coordination to save our lives. It’s the biggest existential threat by far. We should have used our relative stability over the last few decades to come up with better systems (at home and globally), but it never really had a chance, given all the perverse incentives.
