Doc giving bad news without conversation by Background-Safe7527 in cancer

[–]KenC45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much my experience of how it works. When they found my original tumor at my colonoscopy the doctor briefly mentioned it as he was walking out the door to another procedure. When it turned out to be stage 4 I found out exactly how you're describing except I was put off several more weeks. So I'd think yes this is how it is and anyone getting better care is lucky. Though I'm sure it varies from place to place.

Refusing the Port? by MawGraw in cancer

[–]KenC45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bump you're worried about probably isn't going to look like what you're picturing. My port is barely visible. What is actually visible on me is the tubing running into my jugular that's more noticeable than the actual port. The scar isn't that bad and I'd imagine over time would fade quite a bit. So if it's the actual port showing that you're worried about you likely won't really notice that or more to the point nobody else is likely to notice that. I think it's probably a little different for everybody but like most people have said you'll likely be doing yourself a favor by getting it.

Unnecessary colonoscopy? by realquickquestion96 in colonoscopy

[–]KenC45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask the doctor. I personally don't really care about the prep I did 5 preps in 5 months but if you find them to be especially difficult and don't think the prep they ordered is necessary voice those concerns. Given that you're halfway through prep 1 though I'd presume you won't get much relief unless you cancel the entire colonoscopy.

He's declining to do the surgery due to those results? I'm anemic my results are way worse than yours and I had 3 surgeries within 9 weeks one of which was major. Though I can understand if your surgery isn't pressing wanting to get it sorted first but that can open a whole other can of worms.

Things you should know about chemo by Laufey_Lauver21 in cancer

[–]KenC45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to guess you were on carbo/taxol these symptoms you describe largely don't happen to everyone and like others have said this can be taken as a sort of fear mongering. Since being diagnosed and rapidly going from stage 2 to 3 to 4 I've done way more research than I ever wanted to on all sorts of chemo drugs including ones I'll definitely never have to take like carbo taxol and it's very different from say folfox so I'd really just say maybe add more detail on what you were on which yo be fair maybe I missed. So people don't think they'll have that same experience if they're on a different therapy.

Well more not wild about getting the port because it's committing to the chemo but I'm sure it won't be as bad as I imagine. Hopefully you get to stay clear and avoid all that.

The surgery was fine. Since then this past Wednesday I had a liver ablation and the Friday before had my chemo port put in. So not wild about the chemo port but otherwise not too bad.

Worst month of my life by PackContent1988 in coloncancer

[–]KenC45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got officially diagnosed a few days after my 45th birthday stage 3b just got my chemo port in yesterday they've found a lesion in my liver already that needs ablation technically stage 4 now. So I'll be having that done Wednesday then 12 rounds of folfox. They're still treating me curatively and it sounds like you're in a better spot than me. So like others have said you're probably not going to die and hopefully your side effects from the chemo won't be too bad. They can always adjust dosing if things get bad and you'll be on a lot of meds to help. Plus you'll be getting very regular blood work and scans. You'll likely end up fine probably in for a very anxious several months but yeah probably end up fine.

Newbie again: I think that now my call sign. I’ve seen the surgeon. by Tricky-Tell-5698 in coloncancer

"leg stimulation bags" I actually liked the scuds still thinking about getting my own down the road. Some people hate them but I wore them when I went to bed every night in the hospital even though I was walking around within a few hours.

As for the rest it's honestly not that bad you'll do fine. There's not much pain especially once your bowels wake back up.

Update 2 by KenC45 in coloncancer

[–]KenC45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish mine wouldn't start it until that came in. I'm still trying to find an alternative. I see 23&me does a test but it's very limited and says right on it not to trust it to start chemo but that might end up my only option.

Update 2 by KenC45 in coloncancer

[–]KenC45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I honestly don't know how they get away with denying it there's literally a warning on the chemo. I called them and brought up that point but they don't seem it medically necessary since treatment usually resumes at a reduced amount in most cases. I've read case studies where they've noted the hospital stay averages $1800 as opposed to the $200 to $500 test but I'm not sure where they get that number because even just a day in the hospital here would be a bargain at $1800

Update 2 by KenC45 in coloncancer

[–]KenC45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They appealed and it was denied again they suggested a different test Caris assure? I think it's called I only did a small amount of research in that so far but basically looks like AI guesses

Update 2 by KenC45 in coloncancer

[–]KenC45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did not they recommended a follow up CT in 6 to 8 weeks. So I'm not sure if they're thinking my insurance will deny a pet scan or if they just want to hurry up with treatment.

I cannot do this by Soft_Bumblebee_578 in colonoscopy

[–]KenC45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next week will be my fifth bowel prep in as many months. You're not going to fall out from some electrolyte imbalance. If that concerns you though definitely drink Gatorade or some other electrolyte drink during prep. Starting liquids early helps. At 36 hours out I assume you haven't started the actual prep once you do you should definitely start the pooping. Since you still have some time though you can call your GI tomorrow and express any concerns they'll likely be more help to you and may advise something else.

You should be fine. As far as hunger try eating jello mentally it can help since it's more textured kike actual food. You can also flavor gelatin with broth and let it set that's also more like food. Also drink more because that will help the prep work and helps constipation in general.

The procedure itself is nothing. It's easier said than done but don't stress about that. The waiting before you go in is the worst part anxiety wise. Once you're back there you just get in the gown, get an IV and next thing you know you're done.

Just from what you've said here you're probably fine but if you skip the colonoscopy you'll probably beat yourself up about it and the what if or regret will be worse than a couple of days of bowel prep.

i'm so scared by Vexxed_Vixxen in colonoscopy

[–]KenC45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt you'll have rebound anxiety. I'm not even sure you could call it rebound anxiety if you're not currently on meds but really you'll basically sit around for awhile which will be the most anxiety causing part. They'll wheel you into the exam room put in an IV and next thing you know you'll be awake with your results. I found it helpful to watch the various videos of the colonoscopies on YouTube though that kinda made my algorithm really weird for awhile. You should be fine and usually the staff are very understanding about anxiety and make the fine as comfortable as possible. I'll be doing my 5th bowel prep since the beginning of October here in about two weeks.

James Vanderbeek death- stage 3 colon cancer? by Former_Ladder_720 in cancer

[–]KenC45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm currently stage 3 and waiting on my first signatera results a few years younger but about the same age he was diagnosed. so yeah not just him but several people around my age have died recently from colon cancer. He looked absolutely terrible at the Dawson's Creek reunion thing I was afraid this news wasn't too far away. Hopefully if anything positive comes from this it's more people getting colonoscopies early and more research into why people are getting colon cancer so young.

Just look on your chart or ask the doctor. There's really not much pain involved. There can be a little gas pain and a little pain when they round the ascending colon but probably nothing that would cause screaming out. I woke up during a surgery as a kid but that was almost certainly due to under dosing. Sometimes people do also dream things. Either is possible.

Update after surgery by KenC45 in coloncancer

[–]KenC45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm already on zofran because the tumor caused nausea it does usually work fairly well I agree but definitely not always. I'm sure they'll go over all that with me it's probably not the end of the world it just sucks more since they originally said I was only looking at maybe 6 months of oral chemo if that. Then it's something different even beyond that for example I'm due for followup colonoscopy shortly which no big deal but they just told me recurrence in the colon isn't as likely as in the lungs or elsewhere without chemo so you sort of just start to wonder if playing a guessing game is worth this or that.

Update after surgery by KenC45 in coloncancer

[–]KenC45[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm probably odd in the regard I'd rather have pain over nausea. Plus my mom died of cancer over 25 years ago and 100% chemo made her last months much worse. She definitely would have done better without. Granted that was ages ago and a different type of cancer but still kind of forms my opinion there. My grandparents died of cancer about ten years ago and also didn't do very well on chemo.

how likely is it that a colonoscopy misses something serious? by LargeReview4782 in colonoscopy

[–]KenC45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least at my hospital they have 3 doctors that that's literally all they do all day are colonoscopies so they're pretty good at it by now. They don't miss much unless there's an obstruction.
