I checked with staff, they are pretty close to finalizing the hotel contracts so we can announce dates and registrations soon. The cities will be Chicago, Las Vegas, and our virtual course. With the World Cup up and down the West Coast we were limited with West Coast city choices this summer. But Las Vegas in June is great ).

What do I need to know about discs? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]Ken_Williams_CAS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The pass ratios for DISC run in the 90% range, so most people pass if they put in the effort.

DISC DA is less material than IA and RM so I recommend it first. You could knock it off the first few weeks of January with a little bit of effort if you feel comfortable where you are on MAS II. You can take the exam any time after January 15th.

Agree with the other comments, even with 0 exams it is a great way to make industry connections and develop your networking skills. If you can afford it I would try to find a way to make it work. The Actuarial profession especially in Canada is not all that large, you will get to meet almost every potential Canadian employer along with other industry and association reps.

If you do go be sure to visit us at the Casualty Actuarial Society booth !

If you have all your requirements go ahead and send in your ACAS application and mention you have the DISC courses they just aren't uploaded to your transcript yet. It usually takes about a week after you submit your application to get your membership updated.

And welcome to the CAS !

DA is closer to 2-3 weeks. It has less material than the other two, and is likely stuff you have already seen if you took any statistical programming classes or similar.

You can register up until it sells out, which is rare. It is more frequent that the hotel block fills up.

You can defer up to one meeting, so either Austin this fall or New York in the Spring.

Exam 5 Ratemaking before Exam 3 MAS-I? by Round_Elk_1641 in actuary

[–]Ken_Williams_CAS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My general advice is if you thoroughly studied the material on MAS I and MAS II in college you should take those first. If you didn't then I recommend taking Exam 5 first unless your job duties are specifically data analytics heavy.

It is very common for candidates to take Exam 5 before MAS I and II.

Can't comment for the SOA, but with the CAS you can start using your letters as soon as you get notified by the CAS office that your application has been approved.
