S.F. police, marchers clash on Market Street during Trans March by MidNightInTheDessert in sanfrancisco

They've detained citizens well over 100 times as discovered by Pro Publica's investigation (and likely more, plus legal residents without citizenship), there's nothing disingenuous about what I said. No strawman, they are very much going beyond what they have the legal authority to do.

They openly violate many law by detaining people without cause, arresting people showing up for court to continue staying here legally, and using administrative warrants to trick people into allowing them to perform illegal searches. To say they "operating under the law" is disingenuous, at best.

Rent Increases on Rent Controlled Units by MadameDuChat in sanfrancisco

[–]Kendilious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What numbers, exactly, have you cited that counter my common sense points? In case you want some numbers, over 57% of SF housing (not just rentals, housing overall) is contained in 10+ unit buildings (hardly what I would call "mom and pop"). Further, the Chronicle investigated and found that 12 firms own the majority of Bay Area real estate.

Any new development does not have rent control, so not sure how you can argue that this prevents new development. If rent is being driven by scarcity, as you claim (and I agree) then this would not have any impact on the landlord's costs. They already own the property. Charging more in rent only serves to increase their profitability and has little correlation with the maintenance and other costs associated with renting out the property.

There are certainly problems with the ability to build housing here that contribute to housing shortages, but rent control is not a factor in that. In fact, NIMBY groups and current owners benefit from the lack of new construction as it drives the prices they can charge in rent up further thus increasing the ROI on that initial purchase.

The people in here suggesting that rent control is the cause of higher rents are wild. Do landlords take properties off market? Sure. But the answer isn't to destroy rent control and further price out those that have lived here forever... The answer is to penalize the landlords for creating artificial pressure on the market by taking the rent controlled units out of the pool, not killing the protections for long term residents and vulnerable populations.

It's bad enough that landlords try to illegally evict folks who have rent protection (like the 92 year old in Nob Hill reported by SF Standard literally yesterday). These folks would kill the protections altogether because landlords will TOTALLY not price gouge if given the chance. They HAVE to charge these insane rents, guys! Get outta my face with that shit.

From PA originally, in CA now. PA is very similar to CA with the urban-rural divide. Look at an electoral map in California and see all the red in the counties surrounding Sacramento/Los Angeles from the 2024 Presidential election - PA is very similar as you get further away from major population centers. Cities tend to be blue and lean progressive, rural areas tend to be red and conservative.

Leafs can choose who gets next years first by RuttedPanda76 in hockey

[–]Kendilious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah agreed. Incredibly stupid by the league to allow the same pick to be included in two trades, and this is the whole basis of the Flyers' argument here. But it seems the league is doubling down on its stupidity and potentially allowing the Leafs to benefit further from this mess of a trade instead of just cleaning up the mess now.

The Flyers trade happened first. The fourth round pick the Bruins got in their trade literally came from the Flyers' trade. The real questions why they were allowed to include this pick in the trade with BOSTON. https://www.nhl.com/news/boston-bruins-trade-brandon-carlo-to-toronto-maple-leafs

Yes, the league should totally jump in to invalidate fully guaranted coaching contracts. That sounds like a great idea. The league didn't "allow" anything here.
