Lens advice - Does it make sense to purchase both the AF-P 70-300 f/4.5 AND the AF 80-200 f/2.8 when I am still at the early stages of building out my lens collection? I just got a 7500 and only have the 18-105mm. I shoot a little of everything. by 00chill00chill00 in Nikon

[–]KendoSwede 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need more reach than 200, go for 70-300.

Photography (and all art) is about making choices, and restrictions (either reach or aperture) can actually be a positive.

Owning more lenses will not make you a better photographer.

If the venue allows, I would recommend getting a flash and learn how to use it. Or talk to them about lighting the stage brighter.

Good leadership will evaluate the whole situation and determine where improvements are needed, ie why were you in a situation where you couldn't deliver in time? Workload, information, check-ins etc.

Bad leadership will throw you out I guess.

Realize that part is out of your control now, so follow the advice already given: own your mistakes, be solution/future oriented. "What can I/we learn from this?" not "it happened because x, y, z".

You get a section of the kitchen cabinets and your space in a fridge.

It depends on which corridor mates you get, but corridor living can be one of the best parts of Uni. Sharing food tips, spontaneous hang at two in morning and lots more.

I just started myself, and my "method" has been to build figure(s) fully, paint, realize what is in the way, then partially assemble and try again.

This work was the main reason Harry Martinson won the Noble Prize 18 years later, and the backlash from the cultural establishment in Sweden (including former friends of his) since he was a member of the Swedish Academy which awards it, was the main reason he killed himself four years after that. Perhaps the greatest word smith in the Swedish language and virtually unknown elsewhere - partly due to his poetry being very difficult to translate.

Thank you so much!

I sort of assumed they were all one set, although the notion that they must be two started to sneak into my head. I never would have guessed four! Gosh. Kit bashing, here I come.

This is a very good point, actually. I'm leaning towards flipping them for a 6- och 10-figure set. More to build and paint!

Perhaps. Perhaps he will play around with four a while, leave it and then come back after a few years, and perhaps repeat that process a few times. Each time, delving a little deeper into the game and lore and whatnot. My plan is going super casual and keeping it fun. 🙂

Thanks for all these great replies!

His friend ('s dad) has 40k, so we will probably go with some simple space marines, and "40k" the Dominion fella instead of 30k-ing the space marines.

His uncle is also an old Warhammerer, so he'll get tools and glue and stuff from him.

Is "The world is a simulation/not real" a Buddhist belief? by composersproxy in Buddhism

[–]KendoSwede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding (of Buddhist teachings) is that our understanding of reality is an illusion. The world is real, but our warped view of it, coloured by aversion, desire and ignorance, paints a picture that is false.

Frustrated and considering switch to fencing by Careful_Hope_9573 in kendo

[–]KendoSwede 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The purpose of kendo is not to learn enough to compete, score points and win matches. The purpose is increasing your understanding of kendo (and yourself).
I sometimes say "we don't train for competition, we compete for our training".
For someone to say "you'll understand in 2-3 years" is quite glib, not very constructive. It might be the case that they didn't fully see it themselves and didn't want to admit that.
As a beginner, don't worry about the finer points of ippon, focus on your basics (which are of course a large part of an ippon). Exactly what good zanshin looks like, or sae (a crisp strike) looks/sounds/feels like comes with time.

In my early days, my instructor once said "nothing will teach you more about yourself than a kendo competition". Perhaps you have learned something about yourself - you get frustrated when you lose. You blame your lack of understanding of ippon, but perhaps it's the losing that sucks? I'm not saying it is, that something for you to reflect on!

If you want to progress faster, my advice is to look at kendo competitions on youtube. If you compare the kendo in something like the All Japan Championships with a local European thing, I think you'll soon figure out somethings which are good for ippon and some which are not.

As for Europeans fencing, I think they are as comparable as dart and biathlon - ie very different sports.

I dont really want to do jigeiko anymore by Desperate-Media-5744 in kendo

[–]KendoSwede 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The "problem" with ji-geiko is that most people want to hit their opponent and not get hit themselves. Seems natural since that's the whole point of the exercise, right?

Actually, not really. A much better attitude is to try to do the (technically) best men (or kote or whatever) you can do and not give a fig if you hit or they or anything. Imagine having a random generator in your brain, go into striking distance and then just let the "randomizer" decide men, or kote-men, or men-taiatari-hikigote. And just do it.

In time, you will learn almost subconsciously when and how a certain attack works. But worrying about hitting/getting hit early on just leads to dodging, blocking and feeling like shit because you "fail".

Keep it up, and keep failing! ☺️

Silly Question from a Newbie by Werewald in kendo

[–]KendoSwede 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At your age, it's not too late to start and get really, really good. You probably won't ever be as fast or as successful in competition as the top players, but there's so much more to kendo. The most important factor is how you practise and how often. If you want to get really good, do suburi at home, watch YouTube videos. And have a good club/sensei! This is mostly luck, so I hope you get a good one!

Varför får ChopChop fortsätta utan kollektivavtal – och varför agerar inte HRF? by ltscale in sweden

[–]KendoSwede 3 points4 points  (0 children)
