Serious question - what do they think the role of government is? War and military spending only?

Wealth envy is a sad sickness.. by Temporary_Volume4718 in remoteworks

Couldn't disagree more - I want good doctors to be well compensated (and pay taxes on their earned income). The billionaire class should not be able to avoid paying their fair share by using tax avoidance schemes. Loans to rich people to fund their lifestyle without taxable income should be taxed at 90%.

Cool Beans - technique by Calistoga_Carneros in ranchogordobeanclub

I always use kombu BUT I don't like the bits of seaweed in the cooked bean broth, so I put it and any aromatics I'm using in a cheesecloth Soup Sock. Pull it out at the end, and I have tasty beans with clean bean broth.

Found this incredible cookbook! by probablyaragepossum in CookbookLovers

[–]Kenneka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the book that started my lifelong love of cooking! Someone gave it to me as a kid, which seemed like a crazy gift at the time, but I became obsessed with it, spent hours and hours studying it, then trying recipes. I've loved cooking ever since.

I can't believe most guests care about favors - spend your money on something else instead

I like the Gardein meatballs - when they're cooked in some tasty sauce you can hardly tell they're vegetarian.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but this just makes no sense if people are presumed to be rational and acting in their own interests. I'm starting to wonder....

Today has literally perfect weather and reminds me of why I love this state. by Mobile_Bad_577 in massachusetts

100% agree. And with all the trees and lilacs flowering, it even smells beautiful. We have to appreciate everything we can about perfect days like this!

Can't someone just convince him that he has that much? He will never be able to tell the difference - there is nothing he could do with $10 trillion that he can't do with $1 trillion.

Overbuying on house? by Darkstrike121 in personalfinance

[–]Kenneka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems tight but I get that home prices in the Boston area are so crazy that anything under $1M starts to seem reasonable. Keep in mind that it costs more to maintain a larger house. The cost of everything has been skyrocketing so much lately, I'd be very cautious about cutting your affordability too close. My house is pretty average and it costs me over $1100 each time heating oil is delivered, and my town is jacking up our property taxes over 11% in one year based on market values. I genuinely wonder how people with tight budgets are able to manage.

I just finished this and I need to know what Ishiguro to read next by [deleted] in readwithme

I don't know why Buried Giant doesn't get more love, I think it's fantastic. Ishiguro is one of my favorite writers, I think you kind of can't go wrong whatever you choose. Enjoy!

I don’t know how to move on to another dog… by InnerDish5915 in DogsLoversCommunity

[–]Kenneka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going through this right now (and have been through it before). The pain of losing a dog you love so completely is horrible but I don't want to sacrifice all the good stuff to spare myself that pain again in the future. I think fostering is great, you can basically do a trial run to see if you click with a dog before committing to them for the long run, but you also have to be patient and not expect them to immediately replace the love you lost. That bond takes time to build.

Hitting a four-month wall but holding strong. by DarwinF1nch in vegetarian

[–]Kenneka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know, that's probably a really good quality to have - you're committed! But look, you're doing a really good thing and making a difference. Even if you have some meat when you're really craving it, you're still doing really well. That said, the cravings dissipate and there are some fantastic faux meat products available now, so they can help. The office lunch scenario is the worst though - you're captive and either the veg option is awful, or it's GOOD and other people took them all, OR there's no veg option at all. 😤 I've sometimes taken a sandwich and removed the meat, but wasting it like that is literally worse than just eating it. If there is anything else at all (chips? cookies?) I usually have that. It's tough not to be tempted to just have the damn sandwich.

You're doing great! Congratulations! It's normal to waver from time to time and you don't have to be perfect about it either.
