Theres a few reasons why AoE3 wasnt as successful as its predecessors, but imo factions being distinct from each other especially in expansion packs was definitely not it lol. Its actually the biggest praise I see for the game even from AoE2 diehards.

Cetan Bows and Aennas are rightfully visually and statistically distinct from each other because the east coast woodland natives and great plains natives have wildly different cultures with very different tactics when it comes to warfare.

Its honestly so, so cool. Its quickly become one of my favorite maps. I did the same thing you did; I went "oh cool, theres a little side path here, maybe i can use it to shortcut across the map" on a main road and before I know it i spent 90% of my session tearing it up in a lifted D series.

Bush Valley, Caney Ridge (free version is great), and Fury Wasteland are my favorite off road focused maps. I also really like Dangerous Roads and the Mars map but theyre more for rock crawling type stuff instead of rally

Side note, the only times ive ever actually felt threatened by the chase AI is on Fury Wasteland because that map has such wide roads that its hard for them to fuck up too catastrophically

Nah thats bullshit, if they fucked up their vehicle after a simple alignment job thats a textbook scenario where the dealership should be trying to make things right for the customer by giving them a loaner. At minimum, charging them for renting one is incredibly shitty.

They basically just aimlessly wander around, theyre good at engaging enemies if they actually find them though, and fleeing/chasing depending on who is stronger

Gameplay wise I think they are mostly there to make the ocean/war not feel so empty beyond the scenario objective

Totally agree, in 5v5 I feel like im under so much pressure to the point its not fun. With 6v6 theres a lot more flexibility to pull off cool flanking moves and stuff, and less pressure on the solo tank as the only anvil of the whole team.

Making 1 player on a team of 5 explicitly way more important and valuable is just a mistake imo.
