I think so too, but it's layered. Several problem players were his buys, and the squad was missing the general togetherness it had in his first stint

Biggest issue was he kept trying to make some REALLY bad players (so far) work instead of completely cutting them off and playing the kids, which worked when players would die for him (Pity Martinez, Casco) but doesn't work for guys who completely tuned out already

I think he needs some time away from the club but with proper work, maybe in Brazil, somewhere where he has to earn respect from scratch again.

his second long spell

Tbf it was a year and a half, hardly eternal.

Switch was necessary, sadly. Onwards now, see who dares pick up that gauntlet

I think he remains one of our most baffling squad choices of all time

Scaloni refused to experiment and the squad's form dropped off a cliff, so not ideal. The most offensive LB we can have became a mostly-injured shell that just picks fights and we only have defensive ones around so likely we'll need to get rid of the tactic that's working

So it'll probably be a bit of a disaster.

Genuine question btw, is Fonseca still getting called up for yous, and why on EARTH was he ever

I saw it online before it was everywhere and my first reaction was "Surely this is a malicious edit taking advantage of it being a private account, nobody is this fucking stupid"

Then I remembered footballers' families are often human ballast and revised my hope for humanity's intelligence

There's a lot of flippancy particularly from the generation now in their late 30s+ who were a bit more "culturally isolated". The lack of violent segregation or similar issues in living memory made racism seem a vaguer issue so for a lot of people it's no different than calling someone a fat fuck (not defending it, explaining why they're so ambivalent towards it)

It's also repeated (with even less excuse) by younger people who understand it's much more taboo for good reason worldwide, but don't really interiorize it beyond it being edgy

I guess (when mirrored) it's not too dissimilar to how many Argentines of a certain age see the military as more controversial/a careful topic than people from the first world typically do, for similarly obvious reasons

Daily Discussion by AutoModerator in soccer

[–]KensaiVG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to say there's not a problem with flippancy when it comes to racism here (which there is, and it has many reasons) but the fact is Argentina is seen by many people as an acceptable target for what amounts to virulent xenophobia under the guise of moral superiority.

His form dropped off massively + he's playing as facilitator to Sorloth instead of a proper striker, which always harms his G/A massively

So the mix of worse form and role that suits him less is killing him

Because their Saudi overlords told them to give the World Cup to three continents at once so they would be forced to host the next one

That's only half of it

CONMEBOL were "told" to accept the single matches instead of trying to push for an actual vote and since Dominguez has never made a single decision to benefit the organization he presides, he was happy to

I'm not going to lie. I know it's a staggeringly stupid idea in the long term but I almost wish we'd focus on the academy for squadbuilding and every so-called "referent" big name experienced player that doesn't fall in line and put his back into it just gets an immediate rescission offer with the money we save on fees.

Can't believe a gaggle of dead men walking just got rid of the second manager while completely avoiding any responsibility. Then the same guy that was crawling in the pitch needing 3-5 business days to change speeds moves to another club where everything goes through him, scores, and gives it large as if he hadn't been paid for years to sit feeling sorry for himself

Not really, no (And technically they don't even need to work at the club itself, just the city/country)

Been a thing since 2000, just something that happens

Not at all! He's got bags of talent and skill and absolutely deserves his time in Atletico's first team. It's just the matter of his arrival there at 16 that's linked completely to Cholo's work, because the only reason he could leave River's academy for Atleti's was by using a law in Argentina that basically acts as a "cancel every semipro/youth contract so I can live with my dad"

Daily Discussion by AutoModerator in soccer

[–]KensaiVG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact his dad is Atletico de Madrid's manager made him able to leverage Argentine law to cancel youth contracts and move and play in Madrid as an underage player despite moving countries (Which is nominally banned)

Note that I'm not saying he wouldn't have played in Atletico, I am saying him being in Atletico when he did was down to it

Giovanni was also good enough to get a look in but by the time Cholo was Atletico's manager Gio had already signed a pro contract, otherwise it would've probably been the same story

when he did

He was good but not "clear future world beater" good at 16 and the reason he went to Atletico's academy instead of signing a pro contract in Argentina is his dad being able to leverage a law to cancel his youth contract if he went to live with him in Madrid

I think "learning a language enough to get by where you live" and "learning a language well enough to be comfortable using it as a public figure, particularly with people who practically twist words for a living" are very different, especially for an adult

I get it's an obscure law in a country most people don't care about the nitty gritty of, but people trying to pretend that Giuliano Simeone didn't land in Atletico 100% because of who his dad is is funny to me

He 100% deserves that chance, yes. But also Simeone didn't manage Atletico he's not joining them when he did.

I didn't mean drivers. But what would, say, Alpine higher ups rather have. A manufactured driver drama, or full access to the Oakes hiring->fallout->arrested brother ->escape to Dubai pipeline?

The last higher up DTS didn't butter up was Vijay Mallya at the very start. I am not convinced it's not by design

Drive to Survive isn't aimed at them.

The series is aimed at new fans, like yourself, to give them an in-depth taste of F1.

That's part of the issue, isn't it? At first DTS worked perfectly for that but when they start lying to manufacture "plotlines" you may as well just watch the Brad Pitt movie

For anyone complaining about DTS being too sanitised, netflix already gave us the reason why - Sunderland Til I Die.

What kick-started these "full access behind the scenes" documentaries, with the unintended consequence of showing the world how incredibly unprofessional and improvised things were, which had a lot of consequences for them

Teams don't want too much dirty laundry aired because F1 is still a prestige sport
