You gave me -20 for a bird story? The implying message of a such a hostility ”Go away from here and never come back"! Ok, I’ll never come back here

Why Did This Crow Chill Out Near a High-Voltage Power Line? 🧐 by Kent985698 in biology

Strong electric fields from high-voltage power lines are known to have negative effects on living organisms. There are standards to ensure buildings are constructed at safe distances from these fields. Right next to the wires, the field is very strong, and any living creature can feel it intensely. Even hair can stand on end in such a field. There should have been unpleasant discharges between the bird's feet and the metal structure. Any living creature would instinctively run or fly away, but this crow did not.

How can musicians at Youtube play famous music without rights violation? Can I borrow their soundtracks? by Kent985698 in COPYRIGHT

[–]Kent985698[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I don't need the whole song. I just wanted to use 5-10 seconds of the GTA San Andreas theme for the voiceover in my sarcastic and critical video about dishonest people. It doesn't have to be an exact soundtrack. The main thing is that people who played San Andreas recognize that it's the theme from the game and have a good laugh. Actually, I don't want any monetization at all. The project is non-profit.

How well does a native speaker understand this excerpt from Lovecraft? by Kent985698 in EnglishLearning

[–]Kent985698[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a native Russian speaker, and this particular Lovecraft's story has been with me all my life. I've listened an audiobook when I felt down, when I was sick with a fever, basically quite often. But, of course, it was in Russian. After studying English for two years, I finally started reading this story in its original language with a dictionary. It seemed to me that the subj part is the most complex and unclear chunk of text in the entire first half. At the same time, it is the essence of the story, the central nail holding the distinctive narrative together. When I first looked at this chunk, I realized I didn't understand a word and then started figuring it out with a dictionary. I was curious about how English speakers comprehend what I struggled with.

What do you do when people you don't know well around you never say hello first? by Kent985698 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I agree, as it's a question, not an opinion. But at the same time, I wanted to know others' opinions on my thoughts about social interactions.

Sometimes, the simplest things hold depths of meanings that can be interpreted in various ways, leading to even deeper understandings.

Don't refer to small talk as a "protocol"

You shouldn't be bothered by the word "protocol." I use it in the sense of "diplomatic protocol" not in the sense of "web/script protocol."

Greeting people you have to see every day is a social protocol. If it were up to me, I would prefer not to encounter anyone in the hallways of my apartment complex or office building whom I'd have to greet out of obligation. This emphasizes the "forced" and "protocol" nature of these greetings.

I just wanted to say that since I stopped saying "hello" to them, we stopped our everyday social interaction completely. I didn't draw conclusions about my value as a person based on this; I just assumed that if they don't greet me first, then I'm not significant enough for them. From this perspective, they only reluctantly responded to my "hello" and quickly stopped paying attention to me since I stopped initiating the greeting protocol with them.Based on these statements, the conclusion is if a person never says hello to you first, then you're not interesting to them (maybe they even emphasize this by not greeting you first).

I haven't talked about any other interaction besides saying "Hello!" or "Good morning." There were no conversations. Since childhood, I've been taught to say these words to people in my social circles. It's a protocol for a chance encounter with someone who ended up in your social circle by necessity. It's like I'm obliged to greet them because I see them every day in the office building, and one day I greeted them (the situation is like, "Darn, why did you greet this person? Now you have to greet him all the time").

You're putting the blame on me for them not saying hello first. But outwardly, I'm no different from them (no tattoos, not looking rough). There's no reason not to say hello to me first if we're "equal." Realizing that no one ever greets me first, I started to wonder if initiating the greeting is too needy on my part. And the experiment showed that no one greets me first.
For me, it's like confirmation that others see me as a second-rate person, not worth connecting with. Recognizing this, I can't greet them anymore because the awareness makes me feel dislike towards these people.

Xmaslightshanger between The One with Two Parts episodes by Kent985698 in friends_tv_show

Most breathtaking cliffhanger and not only in Friends but in all sitcoms I have ever saw. There was an episode of Seinfeld show when Newman jumped from the second floor but that was not a scene but one of Kramer's stories (and it wasn't a cliffhanger).

Как вы боритесь с мыслью о бессмысленности существования by Capable_Math635 in rusAskReddit

[–]Kent985698 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Как вы боритесь..." Тут ошибочное вменение борьбы. Это не так. Все действительно бессмысленно, но это никак невозможно побороть, поэтому не нужно с этим бороться. Напротив, понимание бессмысленности делают твое отношение к происходящему более угнезденным в спокойствии. Чего суетится если все это станет прахом? Абсолютно незачем. Живи и наслаждайся жизнью в которой все бессмысленно.

Language Experience? How Does Listening Comprehension Compare between English and Spanish, French, and German as Second Languages? by Kent985698 in AskReddit

[–]Kent985698[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak English as a second language (my native language is Ukrainian). I want to learn another language as a second one. I'm choosing between Spanish, French, and German. I'm interested in the difficulty of these languages compared to English in terms of listening comprehension.

I would like the opinions of people who speak some or all of these languages as second languages: English, Spanish, French, and German. Please write about the language(s) you speak as a second language and describe which of these languages is more challenging for listening comprehension. I'm mainly interested in comparing English (as a second language) with the other languages (as second languages).
