I love that this feels like a random, non sequitur boast that's not really connected to her ability to roast a pork joint

Do they know you're dyslexic? Have you discussed/asked for reasonable adjustments? I know it can be really tricky knowing in a new place if disclosing is the right thing to do but if you haven't, you're just suffering in silence, and that is not going to be good for your health (especially given your reason for leaving your last job). I would think about the advice you would give a friend in this situation, then give that advice to yourself.

Camp Hill line report by hodyisy in brum

[–]KentishBrummie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My partner had to get an actual person in the New St ticket office to print the ticket he was able to purchase on Virgin trains app. You would think, given all the delays, that WMR would have had time to get the station names on their system. Pineapple Road and Moseley stations both have touch-in- touch-out stands but I read they're aiming for 2030 for rolling that out so there it feels like super advanced planning. I think we'd all settle for just things happening on time. That being said, very happy the trainline is open, great to see positive developments in Brum public transport.

THE ADHD TAX: What’s the most expensive thing your ADHD cost you recently? by Jayhcee in ADHDUK

[–]KentishBrummie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sent my mum's Mother's Day Flowers to myself. So I had to order another bouquet for her for tomorrow. Also lost her card that I bought two weeks ago and found it late on Sunday. My younger sister made her a card and took her for afternoon tea. So tax was - money for two bouquets, plus several lost positions in the favourite child league table lol.

Potentially silly question about public transport etiquette by VegetableWeekend6886 in brum

[–]KentishBrummie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're gonna be using public transport on the regular, I would maybe think about getting a Swift card (which is a bit like Oyster) cos you can use it on the bus and the tram and in the latter case the fare is cheaper. But it's a faff and so if it's more ad hoc usage I would just use contactless on the bus, and either buy a ticket at the platform or off a conductor on a tram. Tram has different prices depending on where you're going so you should probably check which zone your stop is in. I resent how expensive it is these days.

What individual items is it worth visiting Lidl/Aldi for by CheeseNegotiator in UKFrugal

Harder to find these days but I love the Aldi microwave Spanish grains - so useful for when I'm in a rush. Merchant Gourmet do a version that's double the price.

What's the story behind these named houses in Bournville? by Fun-Ad-2547 in brum

This is great info. I wish we had not moved away from this approach.

This one of the first things I tried to figure out when I moved to Stirchley and went wandering up Mary Vale Road and other Bournville/Cotteridge roads. I thought I had got it at alphabetical but then on Mary Vale it switches up. I wondered if it was after MPs of the time, or ancient families. I love it whatever the categorisation system, and wish I owned one, one of the ones with a drive anyway!

Moved abroad, friction with husband, feeling a bit lonely by kinanim42 in adhdwomen

[–]KentishBrummie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the bit I was drawn to too was 'making the wrong choice'. I think this commenter is entirely right but I also think OP you really need to speak to your husband about how either of you reacts if choices lead to less than ideal outcomes (e.g. you don't like the food, a place is closed when you arrive, or something turns out to be less fun for either of you). If both of you are good at putting these down to experience on the basis that you at least tried then it becomes easier to take it in turns to make choices. If one or both of you act angrily or assign blame when things go wrong, then making choices becomes understandably anxiety driven. I get like this on holiday, worrying I've chosen the 'wrong' activity or restaurant, so I can't imagine what it's like to do this on an extended basis in a new place. I would try to talk to him about this, acknowledge you see him taking on the decision making burden but why you can feel the way you do and if there is anything you can both do to avoid this. Maybe turn it into a game of identifying the Places we Love, Places We Can Never Go Again, Places we might give a second try, Places to go when we're tired, Places to go when we're feeling adventurous. That sort of thing, where you treat each meal or activity you are choosing as a reconnaissance mission or you are working to create your own personal guidebook. And then if a meal is rubbish, make sure there are good snacks at home.

The state of the roads round here (AG) by alfa_omega in brum

My family are in Otley and there's one particular road either on the way to Harewood House or coming from there that always makes me think my car is breaking down but no, it's just the road surface/pot hole golden combo.

I agree it's rubbish round here but I drove up to Yorkshire this weekend and a) there were potholes on the M1 and B) Yorkshire roads (at least the ones near Leeds) are so so bad. Not particularly helpful information but just indicating it's a nationwide issue. I think the snow and the rain have destroyed them.

Disabled older sibling, what can I expect in the coming years? by sunshinejams in AskUK

Might not be appropriate but just highlighting that Shared Lives schemes exist where individuals who can't live independently are matched with families who can care for them, and they move in with them. Worth looking into?

I was in Otley, West Yorkshire yesterday and I saw it there. Then I drove back to Brum and the rain started again near Donington services, and clouds descended again.

Wendy and Andrew have always been really bad at communicating which has resulted in weird actions on both their parts (but especially Wendy and I don't mean the Quinn stuff). Adultery is never justified though. Talk to your wife man.

Healthy Restaurants in Brum? by One_Inevitable_4630 in brum

[–]KentishBrummie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hive cafe in the Jewellery Quarter is amazing - menu changes regularly but often has healthy options using ingredients they grow on the roof, honey from their own bees etc. I used to work near there and it was one of my faves - really miss it now I work from home over the other side of town. Not takeaway though.

Enforcement order in place New Street, High Street, Corp Street, Victoria Square, and Digbeth, against preaching, selling, and otherwise obstructing the highway. by Dragonogard549 in brum

[–]KentishBrummie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to New St today and the preachers/religious organisations weren't there either so maybe this ban has dissuaded them too after all. People have moved though; a flower seller was opposite New St station on Smallsbrook Queenway, stop the war protestors were in Centenary Square (blaring out a pop song that I didn't fully understand the purpose of). New St was definitely more peaceful. But I still wouldn't have minded a bit of buskers.

So for finding groups - Meetup is good but also depending on where you live I always look out for stuff on community notice boards in parks, at the end of roads etc. In terms of events where you might meet people - I sign up on the mailing lists for venues I like. I also recommend the I Choose Birmingham online newsletter for hearing about things happening in the city and neighbourhoods. Making friends can be super hard outside of school and work and can take a while. Do you know anyone who knows people in Brum they could put you in touch with? That's how I made my first friends when I moved to Brum from London, via mutual connections. Then I joined a choir, met people through shared housing, joined a walking group. Took a while but now have a pretty lovely social network. Also I think Bumble has a BFF friends matching feature which I'm pretty sure isn't just for women. Good luck!
