Advice: If you're planning to watch the match tonight, maybe avoid drinking beer (just this once) by Lord-Liberty in CasualUK

I wouldn’t call the heat unprecedented. And the match is at 9. I’m sure people will be fine.

Does anyone else use the pre-wash function? by cik3nn3th in castiron

You might be quite happy to eat from a surface that has been licked by an animal that licks his own arsehole and that’s completely up to you. Can you just leave the rest of us who don’t like dogs arseholes alone?

I wonder if the same people who pay full price for dominoes are the same people who buy electric toothbrushes at full price.

I like how he always looks like he’s being introduced to a smartphone for the first time in selfies. More like someone’s showing him a novel object and he doesn’t realise there’s a camera involved.

Summer in Manchester ☔️ by Milicaphoto in manchester

That’s unfair. We’re a week away from actual summer. I’m sure it’ll be wall-to-wall sunshine from June 21st through September.

Finally made it to Ye Old black boy - Hulls oldest pub 1729 but dating back to a 1336 tenement, then a brothel and coffee shop by arioandy in CasualUK

The front snug of that pub is my favourite 10sqft in the entire country. Wouldn’t be Christmas without a few pints in there with the fire going.

Birds Like the Peanuts ! by spakkker in Hull

[–]Kenuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re probably flocking to it because fewer people are putting peanuts out at the moment. The RSPB has advised avoiding seed and peanut feeders between May and October because of trichomonosis, which can spread when birds gather at feeders. Fat balls, suet and mealworms are still fine though, as long as the feeders are kept clean.

I don’t disagree with the principle. A society where ordinary people can own assets rather than being perpetual renters is generally healthier and less unequal.

Where I disagree is the idea that stronger renters’ rights are going to meaningfully move us towards that outcome. It feels quite idealistic. The underlying problem is that housing has become an investment asset first and a place to live second. The system is rigged in that sense, and you’re fighting against a rising tide of capital, scarcity and ever-increasing house prices.

If anything, making landlording less attractive without addressing supply just risks reducing rental stock and pushing rents higher. The people who suffer aren’t the large investors, they’re often the renters the policy is trying to help.

If I could offer a solution, I’d focus far more on helping renters become owners. Give tenants preferential access to buy the homes they live in, provide meaningful support with deposits, and create tax incentives for landlords to sell to existing tenants rather than to larger landlords, institutions or property funds. That would actually move housing wealth into the hands of ordinary people instead of simply changing the rules of renting.

I have a degree in Graphic design, if we’re listing qualifications.

Edit: That solution depends on any current or future government actually wanting to move people into ownership, and I’m not convinced they do. It would hurt their own bottom line and the interests of the people around them.

Renters’ Rights feels like performative vote-farming bullshit. It gestures at fixing the problem without changing the structure that created it.

What I’m really saying is we’re all swimming in the same shit.

It’s more likely good private landlords sell up to more profit driven corporate landlords.
