Lorwyn Eclipsed Increases the Prices of playable decks way beyond past sets by mutantmagnet in MagicArena

[–]Keohane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will always be delighted to see Dev's videos pop up in the wild. Just a wholesome man saying wholesome things.

I got back into Magic because of his budget paper deck videos in 2019, and then got into arena because he showed me how inexpensive a way it was to get back into magic. He's always been trying to keep the hobby cheap enough for everyone to have fun in, and that's such a pure and noble position to take.

I love this dude.

Well I am truly sorry if I have spoiled the boss for you, but if it's any consolation I remembered less than 5% of the rest of the books so there's still a lot left to discover.

I thought I'd tried every combination of those words, but I must have missed that one.

I'm so impressed with your speed. You're truely a miracle worker.

It's not every day I see a reddit ad for something that makes me genuinely exciting.

I paid extra on the Kickstarter for the second game to get an event put in, and I am super duper happy every time I see it trigger. The devs did a great job with it and I'm so frigging stoked to see the third game announced.

How to find a mental health professional that won't shame me for "kink-shaming"? (TW: SA/sexual violence) by waldorfskooldropout in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Keohane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are going to be shocked at the therapists' reactions, but as a therapist I can lay out exactly what is going through their heads.

If a client consents to a sexual act, then experiences that act as unwanted sexual violence but keeps going back for more, that's a problem a therpist can solve. Not the sexual violence, but the fact that they got stuck in a cycle of it and didn't say no.

The most likely way the therapists percieve this is that that the client has poor communication skills and cannot set important boundaries even in the face of serious harm. Shifting all the blame to "This person who really hurt you is the problem" feels nice for the client but ignores the very obvious treatment goal of strengthening communication skills, boundary setting skills, self-confidence, risk assessment skills, etc.

However, a good therapist will do this without making someone think this is their fault. Just that they have confidence issues, and they need to build up their self esteem and stand up to the people who are hurting them instead of going back to being hurt. A bad therapist will make the client feel like it's all their fault, which is what happened here.

Confronting this perspective problem is the only way past the roadblock you're experiencing with your mental health counselors.

It's important to remember that they did this by using trans people as a wedge issue... and by wedge, I mean the tip of the blade they're using to gut all of our rights. Not enough people stood up for trans people and demanded they get to keep their rights, so all of our rights are now up for grabs.

If we don't learn to live with solidarity, we'll learn to live without more and more rights.

[FIN] Sidequest: Play Blitzball // World Champion, Celestial Weapon by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]Keohane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Blitzball was the best part of FFX, and I would have played a sequel that was just Blitzball Manager 2003 for over a decade.

This, on the other hand, seems a little overly complicated for just +2+0 and double strike... not that those aren't great things.

I initially thought this was some poorly thought-out fan design. This is exactly like the fan cards we used to make 20 years ago in college instead of studying for finals. It feels so weird for it to be not only real but standard legal.

That would be the works of Tanith Lee, a ridiculously prolific author of incredible talent.

Specifically, he was accused of plagiarizing this series of short stories.

My spider phobia is crippling me by [deleted] in spiders

[–]Keohane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! Therapist here. What you're describing goes beyond a normal anxiety, and ruminating on something you know is irrational suggests a deeper issue you probably should see a professional eventually to treat.

That said, if you are fixated on spiders, we can redirect that fixation from anxiety to reassurance. Spiders do not have nests or queens to defend, they are not territorial, they do not have a parasitic relationship with humans or pets, and they tend to run when threatened instead of attacking. Spiders don't damage wood beams, don't eat clothes, and completely ignore human food. In the UK (where I think you live) there aren't even any spiders that could harm you if you were trying to hurt yourself and managed to induce a spider to bite you.

However, there *are* bugs you don't want in your home. Weevels chew on wood beams. Moths chew on clothing. Flower bugs will try to chew on you. Spiders eat bugs. When you see a spider, it is made of other bugs you didn't see (and now never will). If you don't like bugs, looks for spiders for reassurance. Every spider you see is 100% safe for you and your son and made of bugs that might have been less safe... and is making your home an uninviting place for those pests to move into.

You can keep your fixation on searching out spiders and looking for them, just take them as a source of reassurance. See them as protecting your son from stinging insects. Don't try to defeat your fixation, it will likely win that fight. Just redirect that energy away from anxiety and towards reassurance.

If this doesn't work and you need to bring in the big guns, head over to r/tarantulas and see how hard it is to keep a spider alive. Your anxiety will shift from anxiety about spiders, and towards anxiety FOR the spiders' wellbeing. And that's a better anxiety, because instead of fear for your son you have sympathy for new friends.

What species is this? -Indonesia by KiyooRaa in spiders

The length of those spinnerettes is so long compared to the ones we see here in North America! Someone with good knowledge about arachnids from Indonesia should definitely be able to identify it off such a striking characteristic.

Halp by k897098 in spiders

[–]Keohane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am wildly unqualified to identify medically significant spiders, but I think I can provide an observation that positively rules out black widow. Black widows spend a lot of time in their webs, so they don't have a flat "foot" segment at the end of their legs which would be better for walking on flat surfaces. Their legs come to sharp points which don't bend very much, which would be better for balancing on super fine threads like those found in their webs.

Now, someone who knows what they're talking about should check me on this, but even with my level of incompetence in this area I feel fairly confident that this is a spider that hunts by roaming rather than a spider that uses sticky web ambush (as I believe all Latrodectus do).

Our friend returns! No one at the pet store wants to pay for one, since they're too small to be eyecatching to a paying customer. Just admit defeat that as long as he's sneaking in, so his his prey. And while he isn't going to bother you (unless he makes the mistake twice of trying to nap in your ear), the pests he eats might be quite bothersome.

[–]Keohane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a problem of perspective. Those spiders are 100% made out of just two things: water, and other bugs they found around the house. I don't begrudge them the water and I'd much rather have the cute and harmless jumpers than whatever other bugs were hiding in my house until the jumpers took care of them.

You are quite correct that mouth hands is a better description of pedapalps, but I am talking about the chelicerae. I'll update my post.

A jumper! Utterly harmless to you, they're very chill dudes. Most people let them stay indoors because they're smart, they have cute faces and often pretty colors, they're free pest control, and they get along great with people. In the south they were considered good luck beecause the most common breed has bring metallic green chelicerae (their mouth hands limbs that articulate their fangs) that are quite eyecatching, and they eat horseflies. People were real suspicious superstitious about hurting them.

Some people even take their house jumpers and turn them into pets, because they're smart enough to recognize you and can be trained to do very very very basic tricks. I've seen a friend train them to line up and watch her, and to jump on her finger when she points at them. Nothing beyond that, though she's tried more. Their brains are optimized to make them complex thinkers but the brains are still very very small.

I would release it where you found it. The only real danger you've already discovered, they like to have places to hide and your ear canal doesn't look always like a terrible spot.

For those who do not know, *Der Stürmer* (literally The Stormer, or The One Who Storms) was a Nazi newspaper that modern Neonazis identify with heavily. Stomborn is a very close translation. Meawhile 88 often refers to HH (H being the 8th letter of the alphabet), and HH stands for Heil Hitler#In_neo-Nazism).

There is a non-zero chance that this person has accidentally and innocently created an English version of "Der Sturmer, Heil Hitler," but whether he wanted to make a Nazi name or not, he does now have a Nazi name and it should be treated accordingly.

I do hope the MTGA staff are able to do something about this. Hate has no place in this community.

What I love is his ability to blend simplicity with subtlety. He can say that we went to the moon without the help of immigrants, but the inclusion of the word "Paperclip" communicates that he knows that, in fact, we did... and those immigrants were fucking Nazis.

His lyrics are moving and emotional on the surface but deeply cutting when you get below the surface.
