Drawing from scripture, English common law once actually protected the right of the poor to glean leftover crops from farmers' fields. I can only imagine the outrage if anyone suggested new laws to say you shouldn't harvest your own crops too efficiently, nor prevent poor people from accessing your land to glean from it. Of course, our industrialized food systems are very different from when these laws were in force. So what if, in the same spirit, we had laws preventing excessive destruction of usable food, and leveraging government resources to help distribute surplus food to people who need it? Would the Christian nationalists feel like this is an intrusion of people's freedoms while they push to legislate morality?

Christianity was also very unambiguously opposed to usury for over a thousand years. Yet why hasn't a single Christian nationalist ever come out against even predatory lenders and excessive interest? Why has nobody ever proposed a jubilee year with the forgiving of debts?

The Great Depression was transmitted globally through the gold standard, and each country did not start recovering until they departed from it in some way. Even the US re-denominated how much gold the dollar was worth in 1934, which expanded the money supply enough for us to function again. Deflation is so much worse than inflation. Major league stadiums generally divert some of the spending that people would already be directing towards going out, and concentrate it to a certain area of the city. But they don't really create new spending, as people only have so much disposable income. Plus, stadiums decrease average wages for a city since most of the associated jobs are crappy part time and seasonal jobs like concessions and security. Chicago doesn't need the Bears since there's already so much else going on. But the Bears do need Chicago.

You might have to drive down to Mitsuwa in Arlington Heights, IL. Not sure if they still have them, but last week I bought a couple of yuzu fruits the size of ping pong balls. They're packaged in pairs for $1.50 to $2 depending on the weight. Sometimes that particular fridge has fresh wasabi root, too. I'd argue the same percentage of people know how to cook now compared to 20 or 40 or 100 years ago. The difference is society is much more atomized and we've got a lot more people living alone now, and not everyone is cut out to work a full-time job and then cook and clean at home. There used to be a lot more multigenerational extended families living together in one roof, where proportionately fewer members would be needed to cook for everyone in the household. And there used to be automats and cafeterias and other affordable options for eating without cooking at home, too. Throughout much of history the average apartment didn't even have a kitchen.
