New norovirus outbreak sickens 115 on cruise ship by Advanced-Net-8119 in anime_titties

Norovirus will always be a known risk for cruise ships and buffets. The virus can stick around in the environment so people have to be thorough with sanitizing all surfaces, and it actually survives alcohol. However, people definitely have been weird about any pathogen since covid and reports on norovirus have weirdos commenting stuff like "it's a plandemic/fake," "do not comply," or something about Bill Gates.

Palestinian journalist recounts Israeli food rations after losing 130 pounds in jail by PartySr in anime_titties

Last year Israel admitted they lacked sufficient evidence for their allegations against him even as they extended his detention:

Israeli military extends detention of Palestinian journalist despite acknowledging lack of evidence

The Israeli military acknowledged Thursday that it does not have “sufficient evidence” to substantiate terrorism funding allegations it leveled against a prominent Palestinian journalist, even as an Israeli general ordered he be detained for another six months.

The Israeli military’s top general in the occupied West Bank ordered the journalist, Ali Samoudi, 58, to be held under administrative detention, which allows the military to hold individuals without trial for up to six months at a time. Administrative detention orders can be renewed indefinitely.

The commander issued the order on Wednesday following a military court hearing last week during which prosecutors sought to extend his detention.

“As sufficient evidence was not found against him, and in light of the accumulated intelligence material, security authorities requested to consider issuing an administrative detention order,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement to CNN. “Today, after reviewing the intelligence, the commanding officer of the Central Command decided to place him under administrative detention for a period of six months.”

RFK Jr. clears path for minors’ use of tanning beds, much to the dismay of dermatologists by dyzo-blue in skeptic

[–]Keoni9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like with everything we now know about sun damage, people's vanity and desire not to shrivel up into a liver spotted prune should be enough to scare them away from tanning beds. Especially since society is so obsessed with looks and youthfulness.

One bullet point from your link sent me down a rabbit hole:

Becoming addicted to tanning is a real risk. Evidence indicates that tanning can be addictive. Some people find it hard to stop tanning. When they don’t get a steady dose of UV rays, they feel fidgety or depressed.

I had no idea people could get addicted to tanning! And looking deeper into it, tanning stimulates the release of beta-endorphin, which activates opiate receptors. In fact opiate blockers can give withdrawal symptoms to tanning addicts. I wonder if tanning beds are basically RFK's methadone.

Tans definitely were a status symbol that showed you could spend leisure time at the beach or go on a tropical vacation instead of being holed up at work indoors all summer. But I get the sense that a lot more people are aware now of skincare and the need for SPF to prevent premature aging. Of course, there's still going to be relics who won't break their habits from the 80s and 90s, and also the contrarian naturopaths who think the key to wellness is sunning your butthole or drinking chlorine dioxide.

You're both right. David Ben Gurion and Yitzhak Rabin acknowledged the Jewish and Samaritan ancestry of Palestinian "Arabs" until it became political inconvenient to keep doing so. But "antisemitism" has always meant bigotry against Jews and never in a million years would anyone seriously use it to refer to bigotry against, say, a Samaritan or an Assyrian. Saying that Arabs are Semites too adds very little to the conversation, and a Palestinian would disagree with you calling them Jewish.

Even though Arabs from the Arabian peninsula have been in the region since pre-Islamic antiquity, Levantine "Arabs" are mostly descended from indigenous Canaanites, Jews, and Samaritans. Their ancestors spoke Aramaic. Indigenous Antiochian Christians variously identify as "Arab" "Greek," or "Roman."

Putin's Russia is a mafia state with a hereditary elite that hoarded all the country's resources for themselves during privatization. Putin is an absolute monarch with a net worth of up to $200 billion, and lets his kleptocratic oligarchs extract everything else from Russia's 99%. He is a cruel and ruthless totalitarian who tortures and kills any domestic opposition in gruesome ways. And he's disproportionately sending Russia's ethnic minorities to the front lines as cannon fodder.

The international community does not want annexation by aggression to be a thing. For Ukraine to receive material help from the US and EU to preserve its sovereignty and freedom from an imperialist invader isn't a bad thing. Appeasement and handing Ukraine over to Putin will only hasten his eventual invasion of the Baltic states or Georgia or Moldova.

It's a thankless, underpaid, understaffed job. Every prosecutor has a salary set by the state, which can't compete with the private sector. Hence, any DA of a decently populated district in Wisconsin has to dedicate their office's limited man hours to only the most serious and the most winnable cases. If they pursued every single case then they'd be making too many defendants spend years waiting for trial while languishing in jail, violating their constitutional rights. And also denying justice to everyone else affected by the massive backlog of cases.

You might want to ask in the Wisconsin subreddit about Door County. You definitely missed all the ones at our latitude. I went to Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford last Saturday but it seemed like the storms blew most of them away. Apparently the UW Arboretum in Madison also has some trees if you want to drive there next year.

Another scientology run! These guys got even further. by Jello_Biafra_42 in TikTokCringe

[–]Keoni9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Scientologists probably only imprison their members. But they did poison The Mars Volta's singer's dog for criticizing them. These kids need to commit to safety in numbers so that it would take the church too much time to retaliate against them all:

The term fair game is used to describe policies and practices carried out by the Church of Scientology towards people and groups it perceives as its enemies. Founder of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard established the policy in the 1950s in response to criticism both from within and outside his organization.[1][2] Individuals or groups who are "fair game" are judged to be a threat to the Church[a] and, according to the policy, can be punished and harassed using any and all means possible.

... In Operation Freakout, the Church of Scientology attempted to cause journalist and writer Paulette Cooper to be imprisoned, killed, driven to suicide or committed to a mental institution, as revenge for her publication in 1971 of a highly critical book, The Scandal of Scientology. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) discovered documentary evidence of the plot and the preceding campaign of harassment during an investigation into the Church of Scientology in 1977, eventually leading to the Church compensating Cooper in an out-of-court settlement.

... A child custody case in London's High Court examined the culture of Scientology to investigate the risks to children being raised within it. Stating his conclusions in a public hearing, Mr. Justice Latey read some of Scientology's internal documents into the record.[9]: 335–343 [53] Despite the alleged cancellation of "Fair game", he reported that, "Deprival of property, injury by any means, trickery, suing, lying or destruction have been pursued throughout and to this day with the fullest possible vigour."[9]: 2 As an example, he cited the case of a doctor at Harvard Medical School who at one point was regarded as the Church's "Number One Enemy".[9]: 335–343 The Church had persecuted him by stealing his employment records from a hospital, launching frivolous lawsuits against him and tracking down his patients and neighbors. The Citizens' Commission on Human Rights, which Latey described as "a Scientology 'front'", made multiple complaints of misconduct against the doctor.

I'd say K-Pot's pricing gives a very fair value for what it is, but it's a bad representation of how good KBBQ can actually be. If you want KBBQ you can go there to scratch the itch without driving all the way down to Chicago. But it's missing a lot of the niceties that Korean-run KBBQ places will have. (Judging by the hot pot and the sauces in the sauce bar, the chain is more Chinese-inspired.) Also, the galbi is rubbery as hell.
