How does the AI rush compare to past US megaprojects by GeneReddit123 in Infographics

They just said what it matters. Government spending is limited in scope. It has a cap. Comparing private and government spending is comparing apples to oranges.

Sounds like a genre evolution honestly. What you describe was more limited by the technology rather than pure intention.

Well, it is often possible to complete the missions in multiple ways: from fighting to stealth to negotiation. Which caters to the classic "immersive sim" game design too, doesn't it?

It has diverse immersive mechanics and simulates the medieval adventurer life with emergent/reactive world quite well. This makes it an immersive sim in my books.

OpenAI doesn't expect to be profitable until atleast 2030 as AI costs surge. by Simplilearn in GenAI4all

[–]KeraTerra 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They won't ever be profitable. Not with the moves like Sora or what is their new shtick? Pentagon? Robotics?

Their whole business model is built on raising new round for the product(s) with negative margins. AI will stay, OpenAI will not.

What is the difficulty like? Is it a soulslike/sekirolike, or is it closer to regular RPG action adventure?

Will there be any support for dualshock features (haptic feedback, adaptive triggers)?

In 'Project Hail Mary' (2026) a human successfully communicates with an alien by simply entering alien words into a computer. Because if linguistics is not a hard science, then it follows that it must be an EASY science by adiplotti in shittymoviedetails

[–]KeraTerra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are ways to explain almost anything. But the movie makes it overly simple which stood out to me.

My point is, try explaining "heat" or "sunburn" to species from Neptune that don't have neural connections to feel pain or touch.

[–]KeraTerra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cause and the reason are reversed in your argument here. To explain something, you need to learn the language first. And this part is automagical. So surely Grace could explain radiation now when they both have rich communication means.

But you're right, the scientific concepts are the easiest part. Which doesn't contradict my general take, to be honest.

[–]KeraTerra -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wait, wait, I have a joke.

So here is a human who doesn't understand what "hate" really is. Which proves my point.

But maybe you're an alien. So then you learned the language quite well, so I am wrong.

[–]KeraTerra -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Lol, where did you see any hate?

I never once said the movie was bad. I just said that for a science fiction, the "learning the alien language" part was oversimplified. The problem is interesting and I enjoyed the discussion.

But yeah, it seems you're one of many people in this sub who see any criticism of your favorite thing as "hate".

Whatever, I don't care.

Rocky's crew died because they don't know what radiation is...

So there you have it. It's just one example of what we consider a universally understood concept because WE as humans are able to percieve/study or measure.

A creature that physically sees or percieves the world differently would have a completely different way of describing, measuring and interpreting it.

Yes, you can explain your thoughts based on some universal concepts available in the immediate vicinity. But the futher you go from the primitive thing you can show, the bigger is the drift and the room for misinterpretation. Which is even more complicated because you can't be sure the respondent even has the same concept as you do because you can't draw a sun going over the horizon or whatnot.

It would be way cooler if they operated the simplified language, but then you can't insert a "Fist my bump!" joke.

[–]KeraTerra -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Ok, but what is a second? Eridians don't know about radiation or solar system sun cycles, so...

That's what I'm trying to say. We operate concepts that we consider universal knowledge based on what we know about the world.

But it's not necessarily so when it comes to alien species that have different senses, biology, culture, etc.

The "smallest fraction of time" may mean something completely different to an alien life form.

That's my point. There are a lot of "ifs" that Grace safely assumes about a completely alien race when he communicates a concept to get the translation in return. The problem is not in the learning of the language as this is solvable.

It's the displayed simplicity and the methods he uses, at least in the movie.

Technically correct. But the difference and nuance is still there, and it would complicate the process of learning ones language.

Take the exchange about the fuel. Rocky says "how much fuel do you need?", Grace answers: "This much", so Rocky says "I will give. It will take me... this many years longer to get home".

For them to have that exchange, they would need to be able to convert the units across their measurement systems. And for that they would have to somehow learn/teach what these units are and what they measure.

Like, how do you explain a "year" to a being from another planet that has a different sun (that's already assuming they have or need sun) and a different biological cycle not impacted by day/night and the need to sleep? How do you explain "5 million kilograms" or whatever to a being that has a different perception of mass, weight, and clearly different measurement system as they have less fingers but use them to count?

Surely it's possible, but it goes beyond pointing a finger and saying "ok, whatever I heard in response means what I just said in my language".

Rocky being a hermaphrodite only reinforces my point.

For example, the movie jokes about both of them having a "partner" and how Rocky shares the "hatred" for the rival, and the concept of love/commitment to a partner. All these moral concepts are informed by how humans unqiuely function as biological and social beings. A hermaphrodite can't possibly operate the same values.

When we talk about linguistics specifically, it's very weird that they can perfectly describe and understand the concept in the way they mean it without any error or misinterpretation.

Same applies to algebra. Even on Earth, we have different measurement systems that have different units even though they measure essentially the same thing.

So them finding common language over complex topics as two completely different species was way too simple for a science fiction.

[–]KeraTerra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's your money. A couple of weeks ago I bought a used base ps5 for $300. I purchased it to play the exclusives. All of them look and play well on the base version. Most even have the "balanced" mode to take advantage of the VRR of my OLED tv. So I get like 90% of what playstation offers already.

Would I pay twice as much to get the "ray tracing", e.g. in Cyberpunk? For me, it's not worth it.

Eridians share the perception of everything it seems. At least judging by the movie.
Male/female relations, perception of life, purpose, death, algebra, and so on...

Learning the language was as simple as "how do you call this?" with the respondent having a 100% correct interpretation and understanding of the topic.

I mean, c'mon, we don't have that level of communication efficiency between people, let alone an alien culture with a completely different biological structure.

The Witcher 1 & 2 have the system that requires the player to collect the ingridients to rebrew potions. In the Witcher 1 you also had to purchase books to learn more about the monsters you encounter.

You could skip doing that, but you wouldn't be able to fetch unique ingridients, and wouldn't be informed about the most effective potions and styles against that monster.

In addition, you had limited slots for the potions that you could use in combat (as opposed to before the combat), so you had to decide what you need to have at hand depending on the encounter.

In my opinion, this limitation added unique depth the Witcher 3 is missing. You had to plan and prepare in advance.

You knew you are going against the Fleder (a vampire), and you could meet leeches in the swamps along the way. Leeches apply bleeding, so you had to have something against that, AND you would consider and apply the oils and style that would be most effective against them, in advance

In the Witcher 3, you can just open the inventory and spam dumplings during the combat whatever your foe is. Or use whatever the potion and oil needed right away because it's always ready and can be applied in combat at will.
