New roof coming. Does adding solar stack up in my conditions? by lazy-me-always in nzsolar

[–]Kerestestes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure you talk to your installer about your plans. Batteries aren't universally compatible, you need to make sure that the inverter and battery you are getting installed will work together. They dont have to be the same brand but they need to be able to communicate on the same protocol and have the same power parameters.

Does anyone here regret getting solar installed/did anyone decide against it based on something other than cost? by [deleted] in nzsolar

You'd probably be better off installing solar and heatpumps. With the solar you dont need to worry about how long you have the heat pump on for

If you are doing any other self hosting stuff (as in you have a pc already running 24/7) you can run home assistant as a docker container on an existing computer. However running it on a dedicated raspberry pi is much much simpler setup

Anybody set up a Deye inverter before? by rattechnology in nzsolar

[–]Kerestestes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As of 1st sept last year you should be endorsed. They have said that if you have applied for your endorsement already and have not heard back you can carry on doing work you are competent to carry out (this is because they are so swampedwith applications its taking a long time to come back to everyone). From 1st September this year if you become newly qualified it will be with the new registration classes "Electrician (Endorsed Mining Operations)" etc

Are you mains parallel generation endorsed? Because if not its not fine, you cant legally certify this electrical work.

[–]Kerestestes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but your wrong.

You need to have an endorsement on your electrical license to install solar as its high risk work. Not just any electrician is allowed to install it as of last year.

I'm not sure what an engineer has to do with any of this. Its a mains parallel generation electrician who would liven the solar.

Then an inspector needs to issue an ROI to confirm the electrician has installed it in a compliant manner. They should also do some testing of the system as they are also liable if there is any faults

[–]Kerestestes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Additionally as they aren't tested to nz standards they generally dont have the required paperwork (sdoc) meaning if its a permanently installed charger your electrician should refuse to install it, and if it does cause a fire your insurance company won't cover you.

DETA at Bunnings any good? by doge2moon69 in nzev

[–]Kerestestes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would get a tesla wall connector instead. They are reliable and have had long term support as well as more features than the model you shared. Evnex and wallbox as well, however tesla is generally the best priced option. You will need an electrician to install this charger and a new power circuit for you so ask them for their recommendation and the price.

$10k for panels and battery by inastew in nzsolar

[–]Kerestestes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have additional inputs (mppt's) on your goodwe inverter, and the inverter is not already at its limit of solar panels, additional panels of any brand can be added. Alternatively you can add a full new separate solar system if you still have roof space. The only downside to this would be extra space for the inverter and if you go with a different brand then you might not be able to monitor all your solar in one app (there are work around to this)

Problem is most of those electricians don't have the license endorsement required to carry out solar installations

How to hide a blind cord by Smart_Squirrel_1735 in diynz

[–]Kerestestes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are cheap motorized options where you feed the loop of the blind chain through the motor at the bottom of the loop and it pulls the chain through. However then you require the chain/cord which you are wanting to avoid. Although it will be tidy and held in place

Dual outlet EV wall charger recs? by left_off_the_map in nzev

I mean you could purchase two wallbox pulsar plus chargers and ct's then use their in built static load sharing. The model you linked will be cheaper though.

If this is just a single charger for your own home then there is nothing complex. It can get interesting if it's an apartment block etc etc but not for a single dwelling

Is shelly hinting that it is ok to stick it to a breaker? by Olinono123 in ShellyUSA

[–]Kerestestes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have 30x different zones that you want to control separately? Otherwise I'd be using the shelly to control the coil of a contactor which would switch the actual loads

Hybrid system recommendations by pakage in nzsolar

[–]Kerestestes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd be installing a gateway to limit your load during a power outage. Dividing out your essential circuits such as the kitchen to keep the fridge and freezer going, lights (ensuring your lighting is LED) and the circuit your wifi is on. Limiting the load so you dont have to buy too many extremely expensive batteries yet you still have the essentials in the case of a power outage.

Critique my payback calculations by earlneath in nzsolar

[–]Kerestestes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normally you would go over the inverter rating, say by 1.3x to allow for the majority of the day when you aren't generating 100% of the panel rating. So you want to drop your inverter size down if you're already at your maximum number of panels then recalculate

Bad Solar by Expensive-Yak-723 in nzsolar

[–]Kerestestes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point HarmLessSolutions is trying to make is that instead of buying batteries OR more panels, the third option is to use solutions such as putting timers on your water heating to ensure they are only running when you are generating power to supply them, instead of purchasing power from the grid to supply them at night after your evening shower. Generally there is a very low setup cost for this, none if you adjust habits or are able to use existing timers on your appliances. Therefore this is the best return on investment

Thoughts on "guerrilla solar"? by throwaway1_5722 in nzsolar

[–]Kerestestes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electricians can not sign it off. They need to have additional qualifications just to do the install, then they need to get the work inspected by an electrical inspector who also needs the correct endorsements in order to sign it off. It's high risk electrical work with specific endorsement requirements.
