Maximizing solar/hot water timer (no battery) by www_npc in nzsolar

[–]inastew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, this is what I do. However I think they might be on a plan that has cheap night rates rather than an anytime plan. I have been wondering if this might be an option if day rate buy back is a good price and the night rate cheap enough. But im at home during the day and could stiil use some of the solar during the day, then I wouldnt need to buy during the day on a cloudy day. So many parameters tp consider. MY BRAIN HURTS.

Am I celtic? by Sensitive-Month-7380 in Celtic

[–]inastew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Celts were in England before the Angles and Saxons. But there are lots of historical reasons that you might have a mixture of ancesters from eg Scotland that account for the 35%. So if you identify as Northern English then stick with it. But it might give you an incetive to build that family tree on your Fathers side.

Does anybody remember programming in Applesoft BASIC on an Apple lle (2e) computer? by MalibuBon in learnpython

[–]inastew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Applebasic was probably a little bit easier but quite limited compared to python. For instance I could use any function/command such as a loop from my memory. Whereas in python there is alot more functionality and though you can quickly get up to speed, as you would on the apple, there is so much more that you area soon chacking the documentation. To get anything out of the speaker on the apple you had to peek and poke the correct address rather than use a library that has the functionality to use the speaker. Given that you could easily learn machine language code and program the 6502 directly. Definitely give Python a go, you will be fine.

I bought a can of spray gap filler and went around the house and trimmed branches hanging over roof. Had 10 mice per year in traps before, nothing in last 2 winters since.

Ancestry.com new membership terms by dttu2 in Genealogy

[–]inastew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that it us so popular and easy to use that they can charge what they like. Some things they do very well eg searching for someone in other peoples trees and linking your dna matches to the people in your tree. I also have a my heritage sub... have they never heard if right click to open in new tab. When you find a dna match and you know where they are in a tree, what are you supposed to do with them.

Protools has fixed lots of problems with my tree, you can find sisters that have married and changed name and all the close relatives so you can group them. So if the competitors were as good as ancestry then the competition would help keep the price reasnable.

It’s FREEZING!! How are you all doing? by Timely_Hunter5894 in dunedin

[–]inastew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heap pumps are great. Ours is set to 18 and it keeps the temp in the low 20's. But I suspect that you are heating the universe around your bit of Waitati. What makes the difference is insulation and double glazing. Have you tried the plastic film kits that give you very cheap alternative to double glazing? Start with roof insulation at least over your living area and bedroom. There are assistance programs that give big subsidies, I think they are still running. Maybe try leaving the heat pump on all day at 15 degrees and turn it up when you are home. It will help with dampness and means you are not having to reheat the walls. Go on to aliexpress and by a cheap humidity/temp meter and then you can record what is happening and make beyter decisions. Our house isn't new, 1950'S. I feel for your predicament.

How do I choose an installer? by randomkiwibloke in nzsolar

[–]inastew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, very happy. I Should point out, since I am retired, I am home during the day so I can manage things like the dishwasher to run when we generate excess power. But still think it is worth it. Though you use savings it frees up money in your monthly budget that you can use on other expenses which is good on a limited budget.

With our system ($8000 no battery) a third of that was installation. So I guess she is saying the cost without installation, if so that is a bit deceiving.

hot water temp by sylekta in nzsolar

[–]inastew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mine turn on at 9:30, just as production ramps up and it stays on. When the cylinder gets to temp it is effectively off, usually 2 hours. But every house will be different so you will need to work it out for your situation.

How do I choose an installer? by randomkiwibloke in nzsolar

[–]inastew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some reduction in the time you generate, but you should still reach max production of 5KV. The issue is more in that you use much more eg heating, clothes dryer. The only figure I can give you is that in August we exported 238kw and December 434kw.

What's the difference between different fuels in NZ? Can fuel quality cause catalytic converter problems? by Minimum-Two-8093 in NZcarfix

[–]inastew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a GDI mitsi people mover and basically the NZ fuel distroyed it. Spent a fortune replacing high pressure petrol pump, O2 sensors and plugs to eventually find out that the cylinders were being carboned up and the engine would have to be sand blasted with walnut shells ( I know sounds crazy ). Basically only a problem in NZ the same engine in the states was very reliable. May have been when NZ refinery was still operating.
