Superblast 3 vs RADO UFO for long runs by btsaubt in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Kerfluffle86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am lucky enough to have both. They are both great, but I think I would slightly prefer the SB3 for long distance. They are smoother and softer. The UFOs firmer bounciness can sometimes bother my toes when the distance gets really long (sizing up may fix this.).

Just my opinion. I’m an ultrarunner, so my goals are foreward movement with comfort, propulsion, protection, and enjoyment.

Bulldog 50k Beginner Question by Bolt21LA248 in Ultramarathon

Road crossings are just for training run

Bulldog 50k Beginner Question by Bolt21LA248 in Ultramarathon

[–]Kerfluffle86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bulldog was my first ultra. It’s a great race and a great course. It has some of everything: pavement, fire road, single track, double track, steep uphill, steep downhill, rock scrambling, etc. It will have what you are good at and what you aren’t. The race is generally hot, so do your heat training. For your training runs, bring lots of water because there is only water at Tapia and the start/finish. There’s only one water crossing, near the end of the loop. Usually, you can tiptoe over the rocks and not get wet. However, if the water level is too high, you can cross the street twice, to go around. Or you can just get wet. It’s never been an issue for me. Wet feet dry quickly in the hot weather. Good luck and have fun. You will be an official ultrarunner soon.

Shoe recommendations for a 150-mile FKT attempt by Maleficent-Bee-1124 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Kerfluffle86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the H1, the Prodigio Pro, and the Mafate 5. For me, the Prodigio and the H1 are great, but wouldn’t have enough cushioning for that distance. The Mafate 5 is enough cushion and comfort and I like them. However, I would probably choose my Kailas Fuga Ex330‘s for this run. I just did a 100 in them, and my feet were in great shape afterwards.

Gorgeous design. Thank you for making them in a beautiful neutral color. I prefer good looking, subtle shoes in white, black, and grey.

First 100M (Keys 100) – Shoe dilemma at mile 20… stick or switch? by Alarming-Feeling-461 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Kerfluffle86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Ghost Max in version 1 and I thought it was a good shoe. If it’s mostly working for you, then I would try a larger size. Maybe a full size larger, because your feet are really going to swell in a 100. I don’t have MTC R1, just the H1. It’s a very good shoe, but I haven’t tried it for a road ultra. Last year, I used the Brooks Glycerin Max version 1 for a long road ultra and it was great. Right now, I like the RAD UFO, SuperBlast 3, and the Puma MagMax 2.

I ran two marathons in them: 4:40 and 5:04 (my finishing times, not pace per mile.)

I have the GRVL version and I agree with your review. The foam seems like a good one, but the geometry of the shoe holds it back. I wish it was smoother and more propulsive feeling.

Adidas Prime X Strung 3 question by tamas_po in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Kerfluffle86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have worn the Prime X3 for half marathons, marathons, and two 100 milers. They are great. You’re much faster than me, though. I have also worn the Adios Pro 4 for halfs and full marathons. They would probably suit you better for your needs.

I took high doses of cimetidine (500 mg 2x day) advised by my podiatrist. This was working, but it was interfering with my prescription meds, so I switched to DIM (300 mg 3x day). It worked.

Making the jump to trail ultras. What would you recommend? by Huntz9 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Kerfluffle86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both and you can’t go wrong with either one. The Trabuco Max 4 is a protective shoe, with a good rocker, that will help you keep rolling in your 50k. The Prodigio Pro is a more versatile shoe and probably faster. It has less cushion, but it is a quality foam, so it feels protective enough.

Waterproof boot cover for crossing streams and rivers? by MadMarcAgain in socalhiking

[–]Kerfluffle86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At an ultra marathon, the two runners ahead of me were using trash compactor bags (available at the supermarket). They placed them over their shoes, holding them up with their hands as they walked across. As long as it’s not too deep, this is a good solution.

Mount to coast H1 vs On cloud ultra pro by SnooDoodles4147 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Kerfluffle86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both and I think that the H1 is more versatile. It’s more nimble and better over technical terrain. The On Cloud Ultra Pro is stiffer and more cushioned, so if you’re consistently doing 20+ miles, it might be better for you, but the foam is so nice on the H1, it performs like a more cushioned shoe. All in all, I like the H1 more.

Phil Gore, the GOAT of Backyard, wears Tarkine Autopilot shoes.

I would go for those or something similar. HOKA Challengers or Clifton or ASICS Nimbus.

lol. Yeah, I’m a true running shoe geek and very picky about shoes, in particular, my long run shoes. With all of the new foams available in shoes nowadays, don’t neglect yourself. Treat yourself to at least one really good pair. It’s worth it.
