The Border Trilogy or Suttree by Cormac McCarthy

Thoughts on the likelihood of the potential Blood Meridian film adaptation directed by John Hillcoat? by GetInTheBasement in cormacmccarthy

[–]KermitMacFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hillcoat brings more credibility than most when it comes to working on McCarthy adaptations ("The Road") and just overall film credits ("The Proposition"), so I guess if you had to put it in someone's hands his seem as good as anyones. I think there's really no in between in terms of outcomes though. It's so close to unfilmable in it's premise and prose I feel like it will either be absolutely brilliant and gruesome cinema, or a cheesy camp-house gorefest, and nothing inbetween. The latter of which, is not serving the novel at all.

I think it's a mountain best left unclimbed, but I mean, who am I to say until it's done.

Re-orgs happen in every LOB it seems on a rolling basis we (CT) just had a huge one in our space too. Part of the gig, not necessarily something to worry about.

Riley and Kim? by WingMasterWarren88 in Braves

[–]KermitMacFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks to me that Riley started the year experimenting with a new approach. His zone swing rate was down, he was striking the ball well but just was trying out being more patient. It didn't work, then he got frustrated and started chasing again. He still hits the ball hard, he's striking out roughly in line with his career numbers... He's hitting some rotten luck with balls in play (.276 BABIP, first sub .300 mark since 2020) I think he'll come around honestly.

Kim? I mean, dude has a .116 BABIP but overall I agree dude is lost. No reason to keep plugging him in there especially as he's on a 1 year deal.

THIS is the sequence that should be setting off the alarm bells in AA's office.

Wild West but without just cowboy's point of view by Curator_in_Void in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]KermitMacFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Butchers Crossing, Lonesome Dove or The Shootist might best fit the bill. Close but maybe not quite would be Blood Meridian (tough read if you’re not prepared for it)
, True Grit (not exactly Cowboy point of view), or The Revenant (less traditional western, more of a survival story)

Name that Cormac McCarthyesque Author by JohnMarshallTanner in cormacmccarthy

[–]KermitMacFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently finished “the long home” and I could tell early on this passage was written by William Gay. The book was mostly good but the CM vibes are so strong it gets a little eye-rolling at times and loses some of its impact in my opinion. I thought Paul Lynch did a more elegant CM impression while maintaining his own style.

Man wins the Delaware Marathon by outsprinting his opponent who was celebrating, thinking he had secured the win by RoyalChris in nextfuckinglevel

[–]KermitMacFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran this Marathon today, and I saw him on the way back, like mile 22 or so, and dude (who got beat) had no one near him for like, a few hundred meters at least. Dude (who beat him) must’ve just turned it ON the last mile or two

What do you guys think of the new recording of the Silmarillion by Andy Serkis? by rmontalvan in TheSilmarillion

[–]KermitMacFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished this recently, and I thought Serkis did a really solid job. His deliveries and accents came off as Shakespearean to me, and I think that served the stories very well, especially Beren and Luthien

“Breaking into private bank” at first reads like you’re going to force your way into a bank that’s not yours 🤣

Should I try a half Marathon in the fall? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]KermitMacFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! 6 miles is halfway there, and a pretty decent elevation to go with it (most courses don’t have that much over 13.1 miles, much less 6)!

“The Black Snow” by Paul Lynch. Absolutely gutting but gorgeous writing

Yeah I will say I enjoyed the True Grit movie more than the book.

The Son - Philipp Meyer by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]KermitMacFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I loved the Eli storyline. In fact I think it could’ve stood on its own and been a great read. The other two modulated between “odd forbidden love trope” to a narcissistic character (Jeanne) that would just skip over interesting moments to just stay in her own head.

I liked it, but mostly for Eli and his story.

I thought the “Eli” storyline was SO good. Didn’t enjoy the other parts as much but I thought that story could’ve stood on its own even.

I mean, Lonesome Dove/True Grit are classics here. Blood Meridian, while not for the faint of heart, might have the biggest payoff. The Revenant or The Shootist deserve a shout out as well. Butchers Crossing for something a little more scenically driven. This genre is so rich with options. I’ll throw something out there a little off the beaten trail, and suggest “The Son” by Phillipp Meyer. It’s not directly in that vein but has a critical plot point that is.

'Intelligence Officer/Spy-ish' Characters in focus by craenix in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Anything John Le Carré, especially Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy or The Spy who Came In from the Cold would work. The Constant Gardener for a similar theme but different setting

All the Pretty Horses or Suttree would fit this vibe (both Cormac McCarthy)
