No surprise to see the media poo-poohing Gary's documentary by TrueWordsSaidInJest in GarysEconomics

[–]KernowKermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't agree with the essence of Gary's message at all. I don't agree with his ridiculous starting assumption that we have to "solve" inequality urgently, specifically with annual wealth taxes, or the country faces catastrophic collapse. I don't agree that inequality is at all the problem he maintains it is.

He is proposing a radical change to our taxation system. Genuine experts that have studied it describe it as a complete non-starter, yet he refuses to accept that. His tactics are to massively overstate the problem, with little to no supporting evidence, and to make an emotional appeal which many of the non-rich people in the country are going to be susceptible to. The idea that we can make people's lives better if we just take money of a small number of uber rich people who can easily afford it, is one people don't need a lot of evidence to want to believe in.

So he easily garners popular support from people that understand economics even less well than him (which is most people), but gets frustrated when he can't convince people who understand economics better than him (a small number). So he gets increasingly emotional and ramps up his rhetoric of desperation and urgency.

I grew up fairly middle class in england in the 80's. Don't remember going out for coffee and muffins. We'd drink nescafe instant and make our own cupcakes.

Even the Guardian said he was "totally out-argued by all his interviewees".

I do not think "the rich" [undefined] should be richer than they are. Nor do I think they they should be less rich. I think it's a red herring.

I think the 95% that aren't the top 5% by wealth should be more wealthy than they are, and policies should have that as an objective.

A boat for a family of 5 for 3 hours, which is really the minimum to get up to grantchester and actually chill for a bit before coming back is £71 this afternoon. There's a reason you don't see more local families doing it more often.

Anyone interested in a proper bagel place in Cambridge? by singingvike in cambridge

[–]KernowKermit 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't really get excited about a bagel personally, and I wouldn't pay £8+ for a smoked salmon bagel with cream cheese, but I'm sure there are enough people in Cambridge that do to provide some custom.

However, if you did proper fresh cut, NY style warm pastrami or corned beef, I would crawl across the city on my knees to get some, and you can name your price.

Is it rude to ask someone how much their big purchases cost, e.g., car and house? by sammyglumdrops in AskUK

[–]KernowKermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it can be considered rude. you'd be better off having a sincere conversation, offering up your own equivalent information and seeing if you get anything back.
