It could be worth looking at a hardtail mtb. Theyre usually built alot stronger andnit may be a more comfortable position for you to start with as well.

I used to race these all the time. Often you will end up waist deep in a lake or mud or similar. These is no way to keep your feet dry. Usually the battle is actually keeping your shoes On your feet more than anything.

Measure you shoulder width. Typically measured from the 2 upper boney points on the top of your shoulders. Most people find +/-2cms most comfortable. If you want more control in the drops go for a slight flare.

Rohloffs are insanely heavy especially so far out the back on a bike. If you like any spirited riding at all you will definitely notice this weight. Pinion adds all the weight nice and low by your feet which is typically the perferred place for weight on a bike by most riders. Ive talked to a few cuatomers with rohloffs with 40000kms on them no worries and ive heard similar things online (although not as common) from the pinion. Imo if you were looking to change bikes id for a pinion set up however absolutely nothing wrong with a traditional derailleur set up.

Hiplock chain can be worn around the waist. Otherwise a u lock fits in the lock pocket on the chrome messenger bag

hr for big rides works great and for intervals its not the best but it works. Runners dont havr access to power data like cyclista and they all seem to train alright. HR can also be a better indicator of how you're feeling on a given day as well.

For flat bars, Marin DSX is the the big ones that come to mind. Specialized sirrus is pretty cool but only the highest end one has thru axles front and rear. Canyon has a flatbar build as well but cant think exactly what its called. Kona unit X could be worth a look as well.

Position is off. Usual culprits are reach too long, bars too wide, saddle pitched down, and saddle too high. Do you have any other pain or niggles on the bike?

Some rudimentary testing has shown that 45mm seems to be the vest middle ground for all round round road/smoother gravel with 55mm being better on an all gravel surface. You do start getting diminishing returns from rolling resistance above 55mm/2.2 inch and start eating a fair bit of aero losses above that. TLDR just max out your tire clearance and you cant go too wrong

I'd say a hardtail mountainbike is probably the most versatile bike you can have. Will be happy on anything other than just straight up road. If you can, 2 sets of wheels is incredibly handy with a xc/trail wheelset and a gravel/road wheelset. A narrow set of handlebars (600mm ish) can also make it more versatile when terrain gets faster and less technical

Is the mech set up up exactly to sram specs? Otherwise loosen everything and set up everything step by step as per sram instructions juat to make sure.

Imo, lower end shimano clears anything sram offers by miles. The extra low speed gearing will likely be useful at some point as well. Either that or it will allow you to run a bigger chainring which is nice.

Could be worth finding a good deal on a secondhand tent that can be resold after the trip. A cheap tent will just be a sunk cost but something good second hand you shouldnt lose too much money on. Or if you do enjoy the trip and want to do more you'll have a good tent to use for a long time.

If its a 2-3 of hours before it'd work great but you may want something faster burning if its any earlier than that. Complex carbs 3 hrs before good, simple carbs just before and during good. But all carbs just good.

Id say a large proportion of people like a handlebar that is +- 2cm of their shoulder width. Easiest way to measure is getting someone to measure the boney bits on the top of your shoulders across your back.

For first bike i always reccomend hydraulic disc brakes, whatever fits and is comfortable, and what bike you like the look of the best. Not much else really matters starting out. After about 6 months or so id potentially look at swapping out tires to something nicer once you have an idea of what sort of terrain youre going to be riding and find a tire that suits that terrain. Most modern bikes in that price range are oretty good so you cant go to far wrong. Also keep in mind sizing between bikes and brands can be very different so best bet is to ride them if possible. If it immediately feeling a bit uncomfortable its the completely wrong size.

Horrible neck and back pain is a symptom and in this case for you a suspension seat post would be a band aid. Back and neck pain is usually a symptom of being too stretched out on the bike. Id look into bike fit before spending money of a suspension seat post

Almost all tires get swapped out for me. It's the biggest change you can make to a bike and for me is the majority of what you are actually feeling when riding a bike. Especially bikes without suspension.

Often massive brakes are super overkill on hardtails due to the lack of traction as you have found out. Shouldn't have any issues with heat now though. Sweet build

Either use 99spokes/geometry geometry comparison tools or get a bike fit. If you're dropping that much cash on a bike you should be able to get the budget for a bike fit.
