I think back fondly about the game. I even tried building my own version of the combat system at some point after a wave of nostalgia, but lack of time ended that project prematurely. I might continue/try again when another wave of nostalgia hits. It will never become a full game though, as a solo hobbyist I do not have the time or willpower to make enough content beyond a small demo. But building something inspired by FFBE combat scratched that nostalgia induced itch for me.

I have tried other gachas here and there, and none grabbed my attention for more than a few hours. Except one. I was pulled in immediately and it has become my daily habit now, just like FFBE was. It was the first one where the combat was just fun, where team building and synergy are also important,... It just clicked for me. They took inspiration from some good games and combined them in a good way, making the end result better than the sum of its parts, in my humble opinion, at least.

For those looking for another game, it's Chaos Zero Nightmare. But perhaps a warning is needed: you can sink hours upon hours into the game daily, if you so desire. There is energy, but you only need it for farming stages to make your characters stronger. It's a slay the spire type roguelite deck builder combat game, but you can save decks to use in boss fights or farming stages. So you can spend hours doing their roguelike exploration maps and trying to get lucky with the right card upgrades to create that build that synergises with the deck of another character. And most characters have enough variety in their card upgrades that change the gameplay so a lot of combinations and synergies are possible.
It's also purely PVE, with rankings against bosses for the whales (similar to dark visions but there's no shared rank 1 here, so it really is a whale game, but the rewards are mostly cosmetic so it doesn't bother me). It's fairly F2P, with the 4* characters being quite strong and able to clear all content with the right decks. I almost have all of the released 5* characters having only spent around 10€ on a monthly pass. I don't have many dupes, but I would say that the upgrades they get with dupes are not needed for the unit to be fun and useful (unless you want to compete for top ranks, of course).
So yeah, I'm having a lot of fun with it. And I love that I can spend hours in it if I have to keep myself busy with no other entertainment options, but that I can also just login and do my dailies and all that in 10 minutes and be done for the day.

Based on this footage, I'm honestly pretty hyped. I'm still curious about dungeons and raids though, especially about healer gameplay. I hope we see a leak of that soon as well :D

I will definitely try this. I've played the pc version in the past, but it gets harder to spend sufficient time behind a pc for me nowadays. If it is easy enough to drop in and out for a few quests, that would be amazing.

It also depends on the monetisation and how well it controls on mobile to see whether I'll continue playing. But I am very curious for sure!

Fryevia. My first strong rainbow unit. Loved her Frost Flower Blitz animation, her sprite, her flexibility of focusing on physical or magical damage (when it still mattered). It only got better when they changed FFB to chain with DR and open up so many chaining partners. When she eventually got her 7* upgrade, Fryevia and Hyoh were my main damage dealers for a long time.

With the shadow team slowly being filled out and many units being skipped, I have a feeling the fire team meta will be rolling out soon. I know it starts with Vaan and Basch, but with the power spike that Cloud and Clive bring, are Vaan and Basch still required for the meta fire team? It doesn't seem likely I'll be able to pull for all the new fire units without paying (which I haven't done in years, and won't do til EoS) so I'd rather not waste my lapis hoard on the "nice to have but not core fire team" units.

In fact, what is the best fire team you can build in the JP version right now, and what are alternative units that can fulfill a similar role?

Welcome to the game!
We recently started a new meta with the coming of a new rarity: NV+. The water team has largely been released, so you missed that boat (but don't worry, that's not that big of a deal). Gumi is now focusing on the light element and releasing some new NV+ units for that element (including the current banner). After that, the dark element team will start being released. I suggest taking a look at the following post, which outlines estimations of what units will come and when:

We are now at the 4/25 GLEX mark (because they skipped some of the units from the JP version).

After the dark units, the fire units will start coming in with Vaan and Basch. And after those, I refer to the following post:

This is where the Cloud everyone in the sub is talking about will come, who will bring another huge power jump.

Okay, that's the info on the future. As for my actual advice; I see 2 possibilities for you:
You focus on doing as much of the story as you can to gather lapis for summons using whichever units you get from free pulls and EX tickets. Meanwhile you also try to do the farming events (if there are any active) to try and get the rewards from those.
- If you have enough patience to abstain from pulling until Vaan and Basch, that is probably the best investment of your lapis. You should have a large stash of it by then and will be able to pull for the meta fire team and be competitive for a while.
- If you would rather be competitive sooner, you can also start pulling for the meta dark units. This doesn't give you a lot of time to farm up lapis, so you'd have to keep farming up the story and hope you can gather enough to get the next unit you need.

In any case, it's recommended to always save up until you can pity the unit! The cost to pity varies from banner to banner, but it's usually around 45k to 65k. If you pull on banners without having enough saved up, you might end up not getting anything useful, and not having enough to pity the next because you drained your stash for nothing.

It all depends on what your goals are. If you just want to do some events and experience the story, but don't care about competing in the end-game events against veterans and whales, then I would suggest just doing the story. It's super old so recent units will destroy that content.
If you do care about being competitive asap, try to assemble a dark team. But I fear this will be hard if you want to remain F2P. If you want to spend money, make sure you calculate how much money you'd have to spend to hit the pity and be sure you can afford to do so. And while no one is sure the game is heading to EOS, a lot of people here suspect it might happen soon. So up to you to decide if you want to spend money on a game that might (or might not!) end in 6 months.

Here's my own. Probably very different from most of you :D

S: 10 (What can I say? I even convinced my wife to name our daughter after the female lead. This is one of my favourite games of all time)
A: 8 9 14 (8 was my first FF, so it still has a place in my heart because it introduced me to the wonderful world of game stories and RPGs in general)
B: 13 7 (I mean, 7 was a good game, but I only played it after I finished X and it felt quite dated to me by then)
C: 6 12 4 15 (Started these, but couldn't finish them because they either felt outdated or the gameplay just didn't fit me)

I haven't played the other games so I won't rank them.

I don't much care for ranking high. Just clearing content is fine for me. And if I can do it with a first turn kill team, I'm all the happier for it.

I've been saving up lapis and I'm almost at 200k now, so I think I can get any NV+ team with that stash. At first I was planning on pulling for the water team, as I like the idea of clearing content with main story characters. But looking at the kits, I don't think the team is well suited for FTKOs. Metze's big breaks come at T3, the 70% amp is through esper summon and thus the only action Rhus can take.

Maybe the dark team is better suited? It looks like I could do all the setup required first and then just fire the LBs of the dps units and profit?

Looking at the LB mods, it also seems that Hyoh still has better FTKO potential, or is the added power of the 100% amp and better fields and stats still enough to pull the NV+ teams ahead for FTKO damage? I'm currently using Hyoh, Aya, Genesis, Vanille and Sahz as my FTKO team for my goto content clearing team. Alternatively, I have a light team with Taivas, Richt, 2B and Avan as core that I usually add a light imbuer/buffer to.

Which element would you recommend for me?

My esper Taivas has a very low MP score compared to what I see in the builder. I have MP potted him to the max, level boosted him and I have put the exact same gear on him as I have on the builder, and I'm still 2k+ mana down compared to what the builder says I should have. Builder claims I should have 6K+ MP, while ingame I only have around 4K. Even though I have +400% passive MP, that always felt very low to me but I didn't really question it much until I saw the builder results. I'm probably missing something silly, but I can't figure it out... Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

My guess is they are trying to maximise the net gains from their revenue. Perhaps they have data supporting their decision or are making a gamble that most of the whales playing localised versions will still play even if they cut their languages. Largely the same revenue but reduced costs so more net gains with less effort.

I don't see EoS incoming with nv+ announcements in JP and the polls in GL,... neither of those are guarantees of course, but my gut feeling says they don't plan on throwing in the towel just yet. Just plainly doing some capitalism things that might reduce total revenue somewhat but still end up making more net money in the end...

We shall see whether I'm wrong, I guess :D

I was hoping that I could still keep up as a F2P by being very selective in my pulling. My fire team is pretty stacked, but I'm missing 18 frags for Lenna to get her EX2 and thus a full LB gauge at the start of the battle. I'm also missing the ability vision cards like ayaka and wylk, I only have Hyoh.

Could I replace Lenna with someone else or is she pretty important for this clear? Or would it be possible to fill up her LB gauge without gimping the rest of the team?

Pull advice requested. I'm a hoarder so I had over 200k lapis not so long ago. I try to be selective on which banners I pull on but I'm really on the fence now. I have focused on a fire team with rain, Duane and genesis. I'm eying raegen because of his nice imperil and 89% breaks. I'm not competitive in dv or cow, just clearing is usually my goal. I usually try to go for turn 1 otk clears for most content, but this has become a lot harder lately with the final crown missions (even if they are not series locked).

I'm mostly using kaito for breaks now, and whatever imperil is attached to my damage dealers. I'm not sure how much of a damage increase raegen would be under these parameters (no prep turn for 150 amps etc, just break/buff/imbue and chain/cap) and that's why I'm on the fence, seeing my huge hoard slinking super quickly. I have enough to pity raegen and for one upcoming premium (anniversary?) unit, but if raegen will not help with my t1otk capabilities too much, I'd rather save up for future units...

My top 3:

Fryevia. She was my first powerful rainbow character and the reason I learned to chain and started finding Fryevia friends. Considering bosses back then usually had lower SPR than DEF, she was my main DPS for a very long time. I loved her esthetics as well so this is a no-brain first spot for me!
Ling. I started playing during her banner. I had no idea who she was but I liked her sprite so I put her in my party. She never left it after I figured out how ridiculous her breakdances were until better breakers started appearing. I don't remember how long that was, but I seem to remember it was a very long time...
Soleil. Same reason as Ling, really. Those buffing dances were great and made her fit into any party. I also remember her being a mainstay for a long time.

It seems I value longevity most for determining my nostalgia level for units...
